A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@justasking111 oh I think that’s the deposit return scheme

I’m sure it’s coming to England too

I think the point of your 20p ticket is that you get 20p off the next time you buy a drink (if from a participating shop).

It's such a blow to our council who rake in around £1million from recycling at the moment. Which will be added to our council taxes. And another thing it will rely on bar codes . Multi packs don't have bar codes.

England isn't doing glass because hospitality pointed out that it wouldn't be practical for them. But the bloody Welsh government once again have to be different and hit the business sector.

They were going to launch that in Scotland a few years ago then it got scrapped at the last minute for some reason.

Some more on the Burnham-led apology on the radio. Not a good way to go, he’s not thinking much on it. Kemi did a good response on SM.

Poor France and Germany, some intense scenes coming out.

I need to catch up on the news today but something going on in Poland too. Apparently EU over-reach involved but don’t know exactly what’s happened.

Yes I saw something about that, haven’t looked into it properly yet.

CandidLurker · 01/11/2026 09:07

Looks like a bit of an American system where different parties put in their own favoured judges onto a higher court. But the EU got involved and ruled some appointments invalid. So Donald Tusk tried to implement the EU decisions whilst the President was out of the country. Hence it’s being described as an attempted coup.

That’s my 30 second reading/interpretation of some info on the BBC

Read some more it's uglier and deeper than that.

Morning 😁

Home now and bloody freezing. 🥶

I've just been going through today's Times. Nothing on whats happening in Poland. This should be all over msm but you really have to dig to find info.

Kemi was really good on Sky this morning. Great stance on the apology for slavery and brexit. I feel sorry for the king, all this blabbering while he's on his visit.

I see Reeves has crawled out from under her rock and called for us to rejoin. Ed Davey also confirmed this morning that he'd be ok with free movement.

Impeccable timing there from Reeves.

Quoted by Elon Musk and Andrew Neil said he agreed with every word:

"Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?

On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.

As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort."

Yes she was getting a lot of credit on this morning’s radio. Just driving insults against her is more prevalent on here, for some reason.

Blair apologised didn’t he? I’m not sure what Burnham thinks is happening that he can do the same and no more pressure will mount.

John Healey has admitted his plan to increase the defence budget to 3 per cent of GDP is a “target”, raising concerns it will not be reached by the end of the decade. The Chancellor said on Sunday that Britain would “look to” hit a “target date” of spending 3 per cent of GDP in 2030, but declined to set out a firm “commitment”.Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Mr Healey offered a “commitment” to meeting Nato’s target of 3.5 per cent of spending for member countries in 2035, but did not do the same for the earlier target.

"A budget for working people" versus the Employment Rights Act - I do wonder if Labour's collective brain cell understands the meaning of dissonance.

Probably the plan all along.

@EasternStandard he knows damn fine we’ll have to pay reparations if he does that. Should’ve done what the Americans did and said no to the motion.

@Nuthatch26 sorry you’re feeling the cold, it’s not actually cold down here though we have lost the sun today

BTW, has anyone ever done that thing of requesting a live link for a court case?

I know sometimes people do it on the feminism board, but I thought I’d ask you all. Do you have to explain why you want it or is it just open to the public so it doesn’t matter?

Mostly you just ask and they either give you one or they don’t, there have been a couple where they asked you to jump through more hoops.

It is pretty straightforward, you usually have to give your name and undertake not to share the link with anyone, along with some other simple rules.

You need to log in with your full name normally, so other observers will see your name, though many seem to just use their first name. Some courts are stricter than others.

One tip I would give is to use a throwaway email address; court clerks have more than once cc.ed all the people requesting access instead of bcc.ing, making our email addresses visible to everyone else who has applied.

This breaks data protection rules but many of us have had neither an acknowledgment nor an apology, which is concerning given our email addresses may have been visible to TRAs (who can be a nasty bunch).

Yes, second the point about using a burner or anon email address for that reason. Also put something over your camera and be careful about the mic as they have “accidentally” been switched on without people knowing in past cases.

SapphireCasino · 01/11/2026 13:57

Thanks for the tips

I do have an email address I can use. Do they ask for a name and why you want to watch it?

I may not be able to watch it on the right day anyway, and I actually don’t know when it is. I could just keep an eye on it and find out later.

Its batshit. Well done Labour, slow hand clap. And Rayner is back in the cabinet?!?! 'Labour' need a new name.
Good to hear that employment lawyers are having such a good time though. 🙄

The last sentence hits the nail on the head - "Any employer with their heads screwed on will be offshoring or automating every job they can.”
