A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

trying to appeal to GEN Z?

So party interests over country?

HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform · 31/10/2026 12:26

strawberrybubblegum · 31/10/2026 11:25

Absolutely, it's the only reason they are pushing for an apology.

How can Burnham be so stupid?

Burnham just says want his audience wants to hear. If he was talking to the association of former slave owners he'd apologies for the government taking away their slaves.

38thparallel · 31/10/2026 12:45

trying to appeal to GEN Z

The government should ask Gen Z for voluntary payments for reparations.

OK, I'm moving back to thinking that Andy Burnham is stupid.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/55d4fdb0b4a20ad9

Even the people demanding an apology admit that the entire point of an apology is to give weight to demands for reparations.

"Ralph Gonsalves, the former prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, said an apology would be “insufficient”.

He said: “We are pleased to hear that [Britain] comes into a conversation. But it can’t be a conversation about nothing. It has to be a conversation about something. If they are not going to entertain reparations, what is the conversation about? Nothing.”

But Mr 'Needs to be popular' is going to do it anyway, isn't he?

Pisses me off so much. The UK stopped the slave trade. It cost us thousands of British lives, and took 182 years to pay back the debt it took us to do it. We have nothing to apologise for.

Perhaps we should shift the conversation over to reparations to us. It's more meaningful: given that the debt repayments only finished in 2015, most British people over the age of about 30 have personally contributed to abolishing slavery. Current, living people. Whereas no-one has legally been a slave under UK jurisdiction for over 200 years.

Edited

Agree. It feels like a shakedown by a bunch of corrupt governments in the Caribbean exploiting the stupidity of our politicians.

I don’t think any major religion or legal system holds children responsible for the sins of their fathers, and certainly not Christianity.

It is ridiculous that our politicians entertain these discussions. I doubt the Danes or Norwegians would.

strawberrybubblegum · 31/10/2026 14:50

It's not even holding children responsible for the sins of their fathers.

It's holding about 15% of the UK responsible for the sins of their great, great, great, great great grandfathers 200 years ago... and the other 85% responsible for the sins of people they aren't actually related to, and who in fact exploited their own great, great, great, great great grandfathers in factories or agriculture at the same time...

... despite every single UK generation throughout those 200 years paying tax to pay back the UK's incredible work at that time abolishing slavery and enforcing that ban worldwide.

He's a complete idiot. Unfortunately, he's in a position to cause huge damage to everyone, including our children and grandchildren for generations.

Just seen photos in the Mail of men fighting with each other to get on the dinghies. Such lovely individuals who I am sure have a lot to offer the UK. Over 600 arrived yesterday.

I went to have a look, and was confronted by an image of a bearded man with large tits.

I did find the clip of the fighty migrants - don't worry, once they're on our magic soil, I'm sure they'll be as British as you or I in no time.

Sorry you were faced with that. I should have put a warning on! Imagine as a woman having to sit faced with that in lectures and tutorials.

It's in other media too. As people say, it's sexual exhibitionism. What have we come to, that women are required to acquiesce to being sexual objects in service to a man's desire in order to access their education?

He should be told by his employers to dress in a normal professional way. I can’t believe he’s allowed to impose this on others in a working environment.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 31/10/2026 15:58

It's particularly galling to think that the poor students will be saddled with decades of debt to have this inflicted on them.

So bad. Pretty abusive to make female students deal with that.

It’s awful. There is a long thread on FWR with some spirited defence of him as well as a lot of calling out of this plain sight sexual harassment.

I can't even imagine what a defense of this would be.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/10/2026 16:52

And of courses all over the internet including here there is emotional blackmail about making him into another Arday. So apparently we can’t call out creepy men for that reason.

SapphireCasino · 31/10/2026 17:28

@strawberrybubblegum I knew that stuff about slavery reparations was going to hit the UK as soon as the UN started talking about it.

I think Burnham‘s apology is part of the global puppet thing - yes, it will be about paying reparations in the end. The whole global agenda is really scary.

I don’t think he’s being stupid, I think he knows damn fine that this is where an apology leads.

in fairness, I think the Tories would handle it slightly differently, but probably the ultimate outcome is similar, there’s not really anything left of the UK - just global puppets. And obviously the stories have mostly been in charge for however long. I would probably object loudly and then end up paying money and never speaking about it.

I bet. He is being called out by the press. Half won’t touch it. But young women do actually matter, you wouldn’t think it with some excuses for male behaviour.

"New Welsh Goverment recycling scheme could cause financial hit to councils | North Wales Live" https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/new-welsh-goverment-recycling-scheme-34826003

From next October we'll be paying a £20p charge for every can, glass and plastic bottle we purchase. This can be reclaimed at central areas where you'll get a ticket refund. I don't know what we're going to do with all these tickets, and where we turn them into money.

New Welsh Goverment recycling scheme could cause financial hit to councils

Councils generate money from the sale of cans and bottles collected from households. Some fear a new 'deposit return scheme' will see consumers recoup the 20p deposit per item. But Welsh Government insists producers would 'pay for dealing with packagin...

Do you really see it as inevitable?

I have to say, I suspect if we just hold out a bit longer, we'll be too broke for anyone to think that we can manage repayments.

Although given the UK government's taste for expropriating their own citizens to benefit absolutely anyone else, they might force debt cancellation instead 🙄
