A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

An easy to help with the housing crisis would be to drastically reduce the deposit needed for a mortgage. We all know people in rented who pay their (often very high) rents on time who can’t raise a deposit 🫤
Surely the Chancellor liaise with the banks? 🤔

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 28/10/2026 14:06

Emily Thornberry has just made such a tit of herself on X re the Israeli election.
I laughed, then I remembered she is Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee and suddenly it wasn't so funny any more.

Electra10E · 28/10/2026 13:55

Of course, there was no mention of reducing public spending - this trajectory is unsustainable. Billions are being spent supporting people who aren’t working, while increases in the minimum wage are narrowing the gap to the point where earning around 1.8 times the minimum wage can push someone into the higher-rate tax bracket.

More Labour madness.

I saw the post on the other thread re extra billions by 2030. Can’t be mentioned by Labour I’m guessing.

The OBR forecast is predicting that far from Raynor creating 1.5m new homes she is going to get even less that the Tories built per year. The forecast has been massively down graded.

Ah…I simply can’t be arsed with t’other thread anymore.

I suppose I should simply insert a GIF here to convey how I really feel.

GasPanic · 28/10/2026 14:22

Bit of a nothing budget for me.

They are getting a bit more targeted with things like the gas service charge cut and the energy cut based on CT band.

At least these tend to give extra money to people in smaller houses and incentivise lower usage, rather than directing money to people living in mansions.

I’m sure we’ll still have this thread followed anyway ;

It tends to be close watch of individual posters as interesting as we are ;

The OBR report is probably a better read though.

Good to see the wholesale abandonment of net zero with the focus on cheap rather than green power. It seems Rosebank is also assumed to get the go ahead in the forecasts

Rosebank has an Israeli parent, so there might be some ranting from certain quarters, if its given the nod.

BooHissScarySeason · 28/10/2026 15:09

I suspected it would be small changes - kemi’s replies were good she did a great job of outlining why nobody is building, the low wage growth in the private sector and the grad/youth job prospects. She’s got enough to go on with an election attack if it did happen. Labour had no real reply on defence either.

Interesting. Let’s see if Labour MPs and supporters have comments on that.

I think that’s at least part of the reason for the delay.

Ithaca Energy (a subsidiary of Israel’s Delek) own 20% of the equity of Rosebank.

Well spotted.

I didn’t watch as just too bad but reading the takes on it and this made me laugh as the £100 made me think of exactly that

The Martin Lewis Budget has arrived. Pitiful bungs on energy bills and household goods, all while making the underlying problems we face even worse. I’m almost surprised John Healey didn’t advise us to switch our current accounts for the £100 bonus.

Love a gerkin! Presumably he needed to include some working class sounding vegetables. He snuck through reducing the duty on Avocados so at least the gen Zers will be able to use the saving on their smashed avocodos on toast to actually buy a house.

Dinnerontheterrace · 28/10/2026 16:58

Expecting a big dill pickle 🥒 and ended up with a gerkin! 😂

SapphireCasino · 28/10/2026 16:59

I think I can shed some light on the gherkin situation

Apparently, hospitality requested them. And the government were looking for items that wouldn’t directly undercut British producers. And gherkins apparently fit the bill.

And this benefits burger and sandwich chains.

GasPanic · 28/10/2026 17:01

The markets have shrugged on this one.

10 year, £ to GBP, FTSE.

General indifference all round.

DancingFerret · 28/10/2026 17:09

Healey: "This is a budget for the working people of Britain..."

Factually, it was a budget for the non-working people of Britain.

The OBR report says that none of the items in the budget had any impact on their forecast - that is how inconsequential it was.

LetMeButterYourParsnips · 28/10/2026 17:13

It’s not even an early election giveaway budget.

He did raise tax on landlords though, so we can expect rents to go up.

I wish Labour would stop with this ‘working people’ nonsense - it’s so utterly cringeworthy.

Many people work long hours, and evidently Labour do not see them as ‘working people’.

Better if they simply labelled people ‘productive people’ and ‘non-productive people’.

Fuckwits.
