A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Evening all. 😁

I was in a gorgeous cafe over looking an amphitheatre in the sunshine at lunchtime. So nice!
I haven't read much yet, but hope the gherkin budget wasn't painful for any of you? I'm looking forward to watching Kemi's response when I get home.

Despite being a high income household living in a large detached house, we will get £100 towards energy bills as we are band D. Wtaf?

I think Labour were too chicken to link it to benefits so went with council tax bands instead. Idiots.

I might donate my £100 to the Conservative party. Wink

Just checked our cul de sac ten properties. We've got two four beds, four 3 beds and two 2 beds. We're all band F. Which nets our council £37k per annum. The lady in the two bedroom tried to get her band reduced. The council refused but would consider increasing the band on the bigger houses.

Hellooo!

I avoided it in solidarity, thinking of sunshine in a cafe even if still at home listening to music instead 😬

The write ups are funny, some commentary is good, mn is as you’d expect ;

@Nuthatch26 I hope you’re enjoying your holiday.

I didn’t know large houses could be in band D. But council tax banding makes no sense to me. I do get the hundred pounds. That’s nice.

Its mental isn't it. Burnham himself has commented about how daft council tax banding is, yet here he is giving £100 out willy-nilly when the economy is in a mess. Make it make sense.

The budget is something of a nothing burger topped with a soggy gherkin.

The seem devoid of ideas and unwilling to take the real issues the country is facing.

I'll be skipping all Labour budgets from now on. Sunshine and excellent coffee was much better.

I can't find anywhere here that does an Eastern Standard. I have tried ordering one using goggles translate, but no cigar. I'll keep trying. 😂

Credit where it’s due…. They have undone Rachel Reeves horrible decision about ISAs (she cut it to £10,000 for anyone under 60 I think it was).

I checked my small street just to double check. Every house is band D or E, presumably depending on when they were last sold. They're all at least 4 beds and all detached. One house at the end is band F but they have a huge plot, 6 beds and a swimming pool.

True. Sticking to £20K rather than £12K is good. But I can't give them credit for taking a water pistol to put out a fire that they themselves started.

It's so inconsistent! Mine is Band F and it's a three bedroomed house, not particularly expensive.

I knew you were going to say something like that 😂

It was actually £10,000 accompanied by patronising remarks that we should be investing in shares.

The government council tax band checker thingy crashed earlier, apparently!

Exactly. Banding is all over the place and doesn't reflect the property size, or the occupant's income level.

Okay, just trying to figure this stuff out

The headlines never give you the important stuff

So there an extra tax to pay if you are a pensioner who also has some income from savings.

basically, there’s extra tax on investment income or interest income …correct?

sorry @Nuthatch26 I didn’t mean to quote you - that was an accident

justasking111 · 28/10/2026 22:04

I caught sight of Millipede Half heartedly cheering and clapping with a face like a bulldog sucking on a lemon. His net zero has crashed at last.

There's 2% extra tax on landlord income. 2% extra tax on bank interest.

QuiteUnbelievable · 28/10/2026 22:09

That 4% total as reeves already slapped 2% on

Specifically taxing that income seems really harsh

It's unearned income by their reckoning.
