A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I watched them looting again last night, they didn't stay in to hear Macron. They climbed on Joan of arc statue. Graffiti galore on other statues. Dior has hired a private security team to guard their store. They formed a chain outside the store.

This is but a taste of our glorious future. All but the richest will be vulnerable to the wanton destruction of anarcho tyranny. Your business, your home, your livelihood, none of it will be safe. If a mob want to come and burn it down for whatever reason there won't be a thing anybody will do to stop it. Instead you'll have talking heads on live television expressing sheer delight at the glorious 'protests' sticking it to the man, all while they have guards posted day and night in their gated communities to make sure nobody comes for them.

No one will be safe.

Once the foundations start crumbling, there will be nothing left, and if someone thinks they can buy their way out if a general lawlessness they are sorely mistaken.

This is why I get so upset with the current acceptance and tolerance of low level antisocial behaviour.

It erodes the social contract foundation.

A second night of looting etc 😞

French bonds and stocks going down, and the euro.

All the we can always borrow more looks like this.

It will devestate tourism.

justasking111 · 19/10/2026 13:39

My son is back from a weeks holiday abroad he chose a location very carefully to avoid, protesters, volcanoes etc.

Same. I find it quite upsetting and it doesn't feel fair.

They’re in a bind. The riots will cost a huge amount to repair, borrowing costs will go up and tourism impacted which is a major sector.

It all means whatever was there to fund things is even lower now.

@GasPanic

agree. Macron’s statement was weak. Not looking like any good options.

At least he didn't mention 'espoir'. Or not as far as I heard.

HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform · 19/10/2026 15:10

I think Burnham might have cracked it with his new dickhead tax - If he fines people enough for playing music loudly on the train he could solve everyones problems!

Curfews tonight in areas of France. I wonder if that will make a difference. The law abiding are sensibly already doing it I suspect.

justasking111 · 19/10/2026 15:21

Macron is travelling abroad. Picked up that tip from Starmer?

Has he just complety checked out then? Quiet quit?

CandidLurker · 19/10/2026 15:26

It’s definitely been a massive shock to the French system. The gilets jaunes protest were all about adult workers. There have been a huge number of minors involved in serious damage and theft in France. I think a previous Prime Minister under Macron has said the army should be used if necessary. Some of the second/ third generation immigrants, if they had little chance before, will have absolutely none now. Literally no-one will employ them except possibly business owners within their own communities. We’ve got a problem with NEETs but all ours seem to be at home with anxiety not out thieving and smashing up shops.

BooHissScarySeason · 19/10/2026 15:56

Appalling - the bbc has some great clips. One woman accosting flagrant looters outside saying ‘this is not the cause’ and being ignored as they go in and help themselves.

I cannot believe they burned Limoges town hall, that was a PR game changer for a lot of people hopefully: inexcusable.

Apparently that awful far-left site The Canary has shut down. The truth can rest a little easier in its bed tonight.

That’s one less source of links for the cat botherers. If Byline Times would also shutter up the world be so much better off.

You genuinely made me laugh with your post.

Thank you.

That’s interesting. Was it the threat of a libel case that shut it down, or not enough subscribers?

Not sure. I read about it in a very brief daily email round-up from that fascist rag The Spectator.

I don't think they have been very clear why, not what was the thing that pushed them over the edge anyway

What the publisher does say is it had suffered from “malicious lies” being spread about it on social media. An X account purporting to have been set up by Canary staff has been sharing internal messages and making allegations about the running of the business since August.

Also the Canary first said in June that Lloyds Banking Group had debanked it and was withholding a substantial amount of money meaning was having trouble paying staff on time.

38thparallel · 19/10/2026 18:55

Denizens, I googled it and Wikipedia covers the publication and its history in some detail. It said
Following the 2017 United Kingdom general election, the BBC reported that websites "such as The Canary, The Skwawkbox, and Another Angry Voice are making a huge impact and earning a massive following…

Are these more extreme websites really making a ‘huge impact’? If so, does the same apply to the right wing equivalents? (Not that the BBC would ever admit to that).
If they have such a ‘massive following’ then they should be self-supporting.

In September, The Canary then suspended operations, claiming that Metro Bank had blocked its use of a second bank account

Neverstopwondering · 19/10/2026 19:12

The Guardian reported one staff insider as saying that Hetherington had invested around £2 million, but “only about £400,000 was left”. They claimed the money had been squandered on projects such as the producion set up of a newspaper, this newspaper stopped being bad fairly quickly because was a flop sales wise.
