A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

He’s hoping his European colleagues will support him. He sees his legacy ( like Angela Merkel ) as being a loyal champion of the Great European Project. His weak governance of France is not something he recognises and is, anyway, a lesser thing. None of this is his fault, of course. He was out-gunned on the left and on the right by other forces. He hasn’t been able to take them on, but he doesn’t see this as his problem. It’s down to forces out of his control. And by the way, they’re anti-French, whoever they are.

Reading some French commentators online I think there will be a major backlash now. More film of people having their livelihoods ruined. People will want a major crackdown.

Ministers should cut welfare spending to fund more employment support if it wants to end the youth Neet crisis, the author of a government-led review has said.

Alan Milburn, the Tony Blair-era health secretary, told the Guardian he believed ministers should reduce benefits payments to help pay for more employment support, opening a potentially contentious debate within the Labour party over welfare cuts.

His intervention comes in the run-up to John Healey’s first budget, at which the chancellor is under pressure to explain how he will reduce a multibillion-pound black hole in the country’s finances and pay for more cost of living support without increasing borrowing.

“We’ve got to have a different conversation about the welfare system, it just isn’t working for young people,” Milburn told the Guardian. “We need to redistribute money from the welfare system to more employment support if we are going to end the Neet crisis.”

anything run by the government in terms of employment support will be an expensive flop. The only way to create growth and more jobs in the economy for young people is to encourage private business, entrepreneurship and trade.

Who on earth wrote Macrons words. They mean absolutely nothing to any of the French people or the police. Just a please play nicely request.

And big business leaders have been crying out to the government since reeves budget to support business and explained blow by blow why her policies didn't work and why she made it hard to employ young people.

Isn't France something like 54 % employed by state ?

Indeed. French civil servants, including poor teachers, are even more unsackable than British ones. It really is a job for life with great holidays, early retirement and decent pension.

I don’t think Le Pen if elected will do anything about that situation. The right wing in France are probably just as “large state” as the left wing.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 19/10/2026 09:00

I really feel for the small business owners who have been at the sharp end of this, some of whom will have lost their life's work, and of course they're also the ones whose taxes fund the state largesse.

I see that, then I see the posturing ivory tower fools defending the actions with zero regard for these ordinary victims.

I'm beyond understanding as to why the refusal of certain groups of people to actually work, contribute and obey the law is because apparently we didn't give them enough money.

French bonds and stocks going down, and the euro.

All the we can always borrow more looks like this.

EasternStandard · 19/10/2026 09:49

I mean cost of debt going up

Electra10E · 19/10/2026 11:21

Some private companies are making huge profits and exploiting the welfare system by receiving housing benefits on behalf of residents but failing to give them the support they are required to, BBC Panorama has found.

Property agents are drawing people into the taxpayer-funded system using social media videos that offer free rooms, PlayStation consoles and even holidays.

The system - called supported exempt accommodation (SEA) - is designed for people in the UK with additional needs, including former prisoners, people recovering from addiction and women fleeing domestic abuse. It provides housing along with care, support and supervision.

Struggle to see where France is going here.

Macron is a lame duck president now, so doesn't appear to concerned with fixing stuff before the election.

If the protests continue and the RN get in then there is a high probability of disquiet from the extreme left.

If the left manages to beat the RN then they will probably spend the country into oblivion and France will need some sort of major bailout (and that will probably lead to more disquiet).

So I don't really see any way of tightroping out of this.

It's either the RN imposes the fiscal discipline or the Troika.

France looking very much unmanageable atm.

I agree. I don't see a clear path to a good outcome in either direction.

agree. Macron’s statement was weak. Not looking like any good options.

Curfews, the banning of face coverings, and rounding up some of the scum would be a good practical start and would signal intent.

Personally I think that the police should be issued live rounds in France.
