A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

France has evidently become ungovernable.

You know that multiculturalism has failed when the most popular party is the FN. Expect other countries to follow.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 17/10/2026 22:52

As you can all probably guess, I'm not a big fan of the Greens or Mothin Ali, but give him his due, he did try to stop as much damage as possible during the Harehill riots.
So I guess I'd rather have our dodgy antisemitic loony Left than France's dodgy antisemitic loony Left, and also fuck the French for making me feel positive about him.

Dinnerontheterrace · 17/10/2026 22:54

This making me think back to the London riots in the summer of 2011.

It started because the police shot Mark Duggan. A tragedy and a mistake, but not random. The police were dealing with a known violent criminal that they believed was armed and out to imminently harm.

Policing since then has been perverse. It’s almost like they the police and politicians got scared to do their jobs properly and started pandering to criminals.

What really causes people to riot? It’s never the nominal catalyst. The grievances usually don’t make sense. It more often looks like people with no purpose and no sense of self actualisation having a tantrum. We need to get young people busy striving for something. People grafting don’t riot. People who think they are working towards a future don’t destroy their communities. Disengaged, entitled, frustrated people do. All the recent migrants living off the state, wanting more but not knowing how to get it, and expecting the state to hand it to them are a tinder box.

I think many of the people who love the EU are actually quite ignorant of some of the deep cultural issues in other countries particularly France. There’s a veneer but then there are deep cracks underneath that have been there a long time.

Marine Le Pen will not want closer ties with the EU or the UK necessarily. It will be France for the French and French interests first and foremost.

The riot happened literally on the streets where he lived. His car even had some damage. I don't think it is surprising at all he tried to stop them or stayed in the street to help quite things down. If not his and his friends houses/property could have been destroyed. Think most able bodied men would try to do the same if that was happening on their doorstep.

He has not been concerned at all about protests or damage or violence on other people's doorsteps / outside schools / hospitals/ places of work / places of worship. In fact he has often joined in with the fun at protests where they harassed people or violent people were arrested.

CandidLurker · 17/10/2026 23:27

Just seen more film of the looting in Lyon. Awful. Have the police completely withdrawn? What in earth is going on. Are they thinking it will just burn itself out today.

DancingFerret · 17/10/2026 23:56

Reportedly, the youth protests that started in France have spread, and continue to spread, throughout Europe. You don't have to be a genius to work out all this destructive rioting is being orchestrated in adherence to an agenda which isn't yet entirely apparent (to me, at least).

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 17/10/2026 23:58

The awful scenes in France are mostly the work of the left. No doubt some extreme right-wingers and some simply violent people with no political motives have joined in, but the causers of the aggression, destruction and looting are left-wing.

I read recently that the understanding in France is that the left is gearing up for mass disorder should Le Pen win next year, as the polls predict, and what’s happening now is a warning. Sounds plausible to me. This may well be the prelude to a great deal of violence come April.

Agree and also rioting in Albania too? All quite shocking and very frightening.

Understandable, isn’t it?

This is simple thuggery and vandalism - there is no longer any pretence at peaceful protest.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I'm starting to wonder, just a little, if we're seeing the collapse of European society as we understand it, or are perhaps already living in its ruins.
Some new ruins this morning.

I hope Macron and his wife enjoyed the Celine Dion gig. They seemed to.

Put it this way, if dispossessed French ‘students’ are taking to the streets to protest against the state of the French education system, and others are protesting against the cost-of-living/inflation, what will it look like when AI wipes out jobs and opportunities for millions?

Not going to be pretty, that’s for sure.

We are living in a period of ‘real-time’ history, with the tectonic plates shifting beneath our feet.

Part of the reason why we need politicians to look forward not back. Burnham’s policies are nostalgia for ten to forty years ago.

I genuinely see Burnham as a side show, an irrelevance, until we get a proper (hopefully Kemi government).

Burnham is the wrong PM at the wrong time - wholly impotent in the face of what is happening in the world.

The net result of the anarchy in France, will be a cementing of the right wing in Europe - the far left will have squarely brought this upon themselves.

Yes I agree this is highly likely. I also think Europe is struggling and agree with you @KathleenDarleenDayKnightand @DenizenOfAisleOfShame

It’s the very high debt but the western countries that have seen high immigration are seeing huge social and political splits too. Politicians put it on people and look at the mess of cohesion they’ve made.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 18/10/2026 08:04

I was just thinking last night... I did warn on MN during the covid lockdowns that the chickens would come home to roost, financially. Clearly you can't mothball an economy and just print and give away vast sums of money.

Apparently if it "saved just one life", though.

CandidLurker · 18/10/2026 08:21

I think we might be seeing the beginning of the end of the EU project. There could be a rush for the exit between France and Germany.

i listened to a young, clearly North African heritage guy being interviewed as shops were being looted behind him (it does seems a lot of sports shops like it was here - nicking trainers basically) and what came across to me was something like - this is our last chance/hurrah before RN get in.

He was asked directly whether he thought RN would get in and he said yes.

I don't think they do love it per se just that it offers them something that's immediatly personal like no queues or they dislike the visas or small amounts to pay travelling where that happens I've not come across anything yet.
I've not seen any posts detailing the more higher level stuff like closer political ties and the impacts.

It's hard to denfed anyway isn't it look at the action on Ukraine it can't do anything.
It's still taking Russian money !

So merkel has potentially done for the EU what Blair did to us. Rub our noses in it.

However how can these countries leave if they have the euro ?
Maybe the whole thing could turn into what it was always supposed to be and sold as....a united trading bloc nothing else. Get proper borders back.

It's farcial isn't it ,great post about techtonic plates shifting under our feet and we have a pm harking back 40 years to coal.

38thparallel · 18/10/2026 08:32

Expect other countries to follow.

If UK follows no doubt it will be reported as ‘mostly peaceful’ as cities are looted and burned.
I wonder what reason will be given. Maybe UK not rejoining EU fast enough, or Tory cuts or because Boris ate some cake.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/10/2026 08:33

I very much doubt that the bigger EU countries would leave or threaten to leave unless there was a true meltdown or if a genuinely extreme government got elected, like the AfD in Germany (the FN in France has pivoted to being pro-EU, for electoral benefit).

What might happen is that the EU has to change its policies to loosen control by the Commission. That would probably happen over a longish period.

CandidLurker · 18/10/2026 08:58

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame yes true.

just read quite an interesting article in the Times saying if EU countries become tougher on borders, this could actually help Burnham’s case to rejoin.

Marine Le Pen has said she will cut France’s contribution from £8bn to £5bn.

Apparently we paid £0.5b to rejoin the Erasmus scheme.
