A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙☕️

We're gearing up for the Burnham budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I don’t follow anything that annoys me like that. I’m not on much anyway, no X, Tik Tok or FB. It’s only mn and IG and I don’t find IG that full on as I follow accounts with nice images, no influencers or anything like that.

Mn can be a bit much but this thread was a huge salve away from the fray and more recently just skip some or boards generally.

One of the artists I follow has now turned absolutely everything into a rant about AI generated art. I get why she’s bothered but it’s kind of annoying.

justasking111 · 14/10/2026 17:00

Well the advert at the top of this page is Disney, then private healthcare. So perhaps MN have got me pegged 😂😂

I'm getting baby milk adds. I'm definitely past that stage of life. 😂

Thats annoying. You're there for the art, not rants.

Perhaps its BlueSky or Facebook? Are they heavily invested in outrage economy stuff?

I haven't been on X for yonks. I left when all the Nicola Bulley stuff was on there. I couldn't tailor my algorithm enough to avoid it. I don't use Facebook and wouldn't touch bsky with a barge pole.

Delicate dog thanks you for thinking of her @SapphireCasino 💜

I like to think my social media feed is pretty eclectic; it does tend towards Terfery, Kemi, and finance on the serious side and dogs, food, gardening, and decor on the lighter side.

Mind you I do tend to read the Telegraph over my first coffee in the morning which gets the swearing and scoffing out of the way nice and early so I can go about my day feeling pretty calm 😄

EasternStandard · 14/10/2026 17:24

I’m not on BlueSky either. Although there’s probably a high cross over on here.

I don’t get why people follow a lot of what outrages them either, for a start it’s likely earning that person or press money.

SapphireCasino · 14/10/2026 17:28

@Nuthatch26 “Perhaps its BlueSky or Facebook? Are they heavily invested in outrage economy stuff?”

sorry, perhaps what is BlueSky or Facebook?

I actually think that any Internet platform is very much linked to the outrage economy now. I think the outrage economy makes enough money that any platform is going to link to it.

I haven’t used BlueSky or Facebook. X is very easy to deal with in the sense that you can just look at the feed of the people you follow. It occasionally tries to do the “ for you” thing, but I just change it immediately. It’s extremely obvious because if I don’t have a feed full of art and cats, something is wrong 😂

I don’t tend to look at the sidebar because that probably is where the outrage economy comes in to play the most - “trending” used to actually mean something but now it doesn’t really.

I sometimes get confused here when people say that they couldn’t avoid seeing some awful thing on social media, but I don’t have anything set to autoplay, I don’t generally look at people outside of who I’m following etc

Nuthatch26 · 14/10/2026 17:28

I read the Times and telegraph most days (not all). Agree that winds me up sometimes too. It's much less enraging now Starmer and Reeves are gone.

I spent my coffee break on IG watching someone jet wash a seriously filthy rug. It was glorious. 😂

I think Facebook does push stuff on people. I'm really on there as it's the only way some friends and family members stay in touch. All the younger ones seem to have migrated to Instagram and however much I try I can't get the hang of it.

I do still enjoy X, especially since Elon took over. I got banned a number of times before he did thanks to TRAs reporting anyone who even gently questioned their version of the Right Side of History. Hilarious looking back, as I am really not combative!

I spend the biggest proportion of my online time here I reckon. (And nattering on WhatsApp).

justasking111 · 14/10/2026 17:34

I do go on ✖️. But only when something in the news grabs my attention. You can get raw footage uploads which the media do run later. It feels more honest sometimes. I never check my own page though. The start of the Iran war was brutal.

Blue sky I joined just to see something that I read on here, think it was a MN pile on. Never been back.

SapphireCasino · 14/10/2026 17:40

@justasking111 why do you find it strange?

Nuthatch26 · 14/10/2026 17:45

Interesting that we're all quite similar on our use of sm.

@SapphireCasino Surprised you've never heard of Facebook? Bluesky is an X spin off for lefties.

of course I’ve heard of Facebook 😂 and BlueSky.

when you said “ perhaps it’s” I have lost track of what “ it” is.

I probably misunderstood something really obvious - sorry.

now I’m reminded of Bill Clinton saying “ it depends what your definition of is is” 😂😂

@justasking111 why do you find it strange?

Because she's an Irish republic writer. Are we to ban foreign writers who support organisations that this government have banned. Really?

I just checked Amazon they've pulled all kindle copies of her books. But physical copies are still available.

Suppose JK Rowling had been banned over her views and financial support.

It doesn't sit well with me.

That’s not the reason, though surely?

I’m speculating, but my thinking is that both the publisher and the distributor cannot legally be involved with something that’s been declared by the author as funding a terrorist group. They would fall foul of the law if they continued to sell and distribute that product.

Edited

I did this once with a Persian type rug in a heatwave it really was rewarding.

Where does it stop must an employer sack you because you support a group.

I know she'll get royalties from other countries. But her TV series if shown here she cannot get those royalties.

To be fair, I mostly see this on the right (possibly because I don’t look at left-wing politics much)

as I say, I had the misfortune of bumping into something last night, because of that normally non-political guy who posted something really grim (in my view), and I found myself feeling really quite annoyed that there is no one prominent calling out these issues.

I’m thinking it over, and it’s interesting that you said that about Danny Tommo, that you’d not heard of him. because in reality, the things referenced by this guy, I have heard of them… but I suspect if I walked into the pubs round here, even though Essex is Reform and right wing etc, I don’t think they would’ve heard of them either. Or the majority would not. So maybe important people don’t call out this type of thing because it’s just occupying a fairly obscure corner of the Internet devoted to the outrage economy….Which in turn leads me to ask if the people saying it actually believe what they’re saying or it’s just a way to make money.

Stupidly, I kind of know the answer to that question… they do just want to make money… but I wonder what happens to them in the real world?

Maybe in 10 years, they’ll be like the guy from Crewkerne Gazette and want to be forgiven in order to get back into normal society. Though that might not be a fair comparison because he actually committed several crimes.

Anyway, I’m going to go and do something more constructive now!
