What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 14:34

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

Blimey people are feisty this evening.

The OP has had her food and her dinner plates slated.

I also had the Sainsburys chicken on special offer, although I didn't ger round to using it.

We aren't a massive roast family, in fact I only tend to do a "proper" roast with all the trimmings at Easter and Christmas.

We do have variations of a roast (lamb chops, minted new potatoes with and veg and gravy or porkloin with mustard mash and veg, or roasted chicken with jacket potatoes and homemade coleslaw etc) but proper full on roasts are rare. We do all love a roast spud though and I often make them with steak or breaded chicken.

Rude

Really? It looks awful. They are not boulangerie potatoes because I made those midweek with a steak stew. Carrots are never like that on homemade dinners. Sliced home cooked pork doesn't look like that. The peas. Ugh.

MsSmartShoes · 11/10/2026 20:05

Won’t a slow cooked pork loin be dry?

I am researching hormones etc in meat and as organic is prohibitively expensive- I can only suggest cauliflower cheese…

I like roast pork belly- always seems to be a cheap(er) option, and it’s my favourite. We serve it with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, yorkshire puddings & boiled buttered cabbage. Have managed to get a good system of prepping veg & sides in the morning, so it ends up feeling like a pretty easy dinner. It’s my DDs’ favourite meal of the week!

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

Are you always so rude? Do you claim to be one of those people who 'tells it like it is'?

SabrinaBricklayer · 11/10/2026 20:06

Goodness there are some bad mannered people about tonight and they’re all on this thread.

I think it’s looks perfectly fine and I’d have happily eaten it. I made Marry Me Chicken but didn’t have some quite important ingredients (I did at least have the chicken ), so it’s just as well I was here by myself as it wasn’t proposal worthy.

Minced chicken/ turkey or sausage meat mixed with paxo and cooked in a loaf tin, then sliced and served with roast spuds and veg. My kids loved it when we were broke when they were young and to this day they are still convinced it is a treat so I still do it as a side when I do Xmas dinner and it is always the first thing to go.

How does the marmite compare to stock, in terms of saltiness?
Looks like the 'beef' stock is about £8 a tub on Amazon.

Might try the Marmite stock substitute, in a red wine and onion gravy recipe, and see how that goes. Thank you!

Oh I don't buy it on Amazon, I bulk buy the chicken and beef ones once a year from a low FODMAP website where it's loads cheaper!

I have never actually had real beef stock in my life so no idea how marmite compares, sorry. But it's my cheap go-to substitute.

Stealing this for a side dish at Christmas. Sounds fab.

I saw a recipe on TikTok just this week from a chef called Amy Sheppard for sage and onion chicken balls and I thought they looked quite tasty.

Absolute love your Portmeirion plates. I’ve recently bought some bowls and I’m enjoying eating my cereal out of them every morning Smile

PeanutCat1 · 11/10/2026 20:10

I feel like aside from the meat, a roast is a nice cheap meal really. Veggies, stuffing, homemade yorkshires and gravy are all nice and cheap and I usually just buy whatever meat is on offer or sometimes gammon, we are a greedy family so if I do a chicken I sometimes bulk it out with chipolatas as well to stretch the chicken to further meals.

Ive recently starting making a one pot peach pudding which I serve with cream, all gets mixed together in one baking dish and bunged in the oven once I’ve served the roast, it’s absolutely delicious and uses tinned peaches which I buy the cheap ones at like 45p a can and the rest of the ingredients I always have in so it’s a super easy, cheap crowd pleaser.

My carrots look like that, what’s wrong with them?

Vegetarian Wellington, roast potatoes and it's sprout season, yum!

I'm trying to perfect a veg crumble recipe for Christmas, haven't done hugely well so far.

No doubt the reform voters will have a flounce!

I really like the idea of a veggie crumble, thank you. I'm off to research recipes now 😋

HedgerowD · 11/10/2026 20:11

If we are out somewhere on a Sunday morning I do toad in the hole instead of a full roast. I do try and buy joints of meat for the freezer when the supermarkets do the Christmas and easter offers. And then we have a meat slicer so the left overs go further.

bababamama · 11/10/2026 20:12

Shoulder of pork (Lidl) roasted carrots, roasted parsnips, roast potatoes, roast sweet potatoes (all roast veg in separate tray as vegetarian in our midst). Cauliflower cheese (Lidl frozen), mashed swede, red cabbage with red onion and apple (makes loads and freezes well). Green veg steamed in microwave, red gravy granules (it’s vegan) and something from the freezer for the fussy vegetarians as their main eg individual veggie wellingtons. Nothing fancy at all but delicious and you can feed a family for under £10 and have leftover meat for another full meal, I cook extra veg too often so serve bubble and squeak with leftover meat

The meal looks lovely, @OP, and I agree about the plate - gravy retention is important.

It absolutely is - I now eat meals that have gravy in pasta bowls!

My homemade carrots always look like that…why wouldn’t they? What do yours look like? (That has genuinely confused me now…am I doing my carrots wrong? 🤯)

I’ve upped my game these days and I line the tin with streaky smoked bacon so it’s all wrapped up. I tend to make two and fridge one for Boxing Day as it slices beautifully with cold meats for sandwiches. For me the Boxing Day sammies are the best bit 🥰

LITERALLY THOUSANDS of households cut their carrots like that...

Sliced pork looks like slices of pork like in OPs photo.

You're just being rude.

Love to see YOUR steak stew dinner.... Bet it looks disgusting and like a ready meal...

The critism stands though. No way would I eat that. It's a defrosted, deconstructed icky dinner.

The plates are nice.

Soontobe60 · 11/10/2026 20:17

My cheap Sunday lunch is cauliflower cheese as main (DH is veggie), roast spuds, roast carrots, tender stem broccoli and lashings of gravy.
