Also remember he's a paraplegic and in a wheelchair. So the actual question being debated is whether they shoot him lying down or strap him in a wheelchair. Anyone comfortable with that needs to take a good long hard look at themselves.
And frankly should never again post on any thread about Dubai/ME that goes on and on about human rights abuses. I mean how is this any different from the Saudis chopping off the arms or public executions in Iran??

Jesus Christ I had no idea.

The depths to which these nutcases fall are just unbelievable.

I’m not making light of the deaths of others he’s responsible for but good god, the thought of live streaming this is just barbaric.

Modernschooling · 09/10/2026 18:50

The idea of a Western country live streaming an execution in 2026 is unbelievable frankly.
The point of belong civilised is not to be barbaric. In the first instance and then in wider society,

LoisQ · 09/10/2026 18:55

The actual execution is perfectly justified as has been for years. The live streaming I understand why it's not the best

Is that title correct? The book blurb doesn’t seem to match.

Yes I just checked the name in case I misspelled it. It's definitely 'Vernon God Little' by DBC Pierre. Won the Man Booker in 03.

momtoboys · 09/10/2026 17:44

My DH said the same thing. Anything to line the pockets of the miscreants in charge.

Yeah pay per view, it is honestly .barbaric.

Greenseawitch · 09/10/2026 19:35

Televising this is just pure insanity.

I am not against the death penalty in some circumstances but turning it into a spectacle is not what democratic, decent countries do.

JHound · 09/10/2026 19:40

HangryBrickShark · 09/10/2026 10:46

I don't really care. My sympathy is with the victims of those on death row. People go on about how unfair it is to put people to death, its inhumane, etc, etc.

What about the poor victims that have been raped, mutilated, tortured and everything in between? Young children and babies who are murdered? Teenagers who are violated and tortured?

Some of us are capable of more than one thought at once.

Such as having sympathy for the victims AND being opposed to public executions.

JHound · 09/10/2026 19:41

Zimunya · 09/10/2026 10:56

A friend of mine was very anti the death penalty, until her grandmother was murdered. After that she changed her mind. She said that the thought of her taxes going every month to feed and shelter the person who had murdered her grandmother in cold blood was horrendous. I can see both points of view.

So she didn’t care when it was other people’s grandmothers being murdered.

JHound · 09/10/2026 19:49

Purpledaisybug · 09/10/2026 10:37

I strongly suspect that if the perpetrator was white they wouldn't feel the need to livestream it.

It’s sad that this was one of my first thoughts.

Modernschooling · 09/10/2026 19:59

The point is punishments in the past reflected that life was hard and fragile.
Life is easier, better and we spend tons of money keeping each other alive.
The shit humans who arbitrarily kill others are the problem but they also have a problem. Making a society that doesn’t think violence solves the problem of violence is key. The rest of us should be better.

Waitingfordoggo · 09/10/2026 20:03

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 09/10/2026 17:49

Well yes a lot of left wing people took glee in watching that video; creating freeze shots etc

Sick people everywhere, and the left are just as violent as the right now

Most teenagers couldn’t really be described as right or left wing I don’t think. But unfortunately teenagers of all personality types and political leanings might be drawn to watching something like this, because it’s shocking and everyone is talking about it. Teenagers don’t think about consequences like adults do so will watch something like this and then really struggle to process it (I think this is what @Pieceofpurplesky was talking about, rather than making any sort of political point).

LoisQ · 09/10/2026 20:12

I think I've changed my mind. He should be executed. But yeah the live stream is just gore and not needed.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 09/10/2026 20:30

tootiredtobeinspired · 09/10/2026 15:09

Yes but you are advocating for the STATE to do the killing for you. I do not think any government should have that power. Governments make mistakes, they abuse power, they are influenced by public anger and political pressure. Limiting state power is a safeguard for all of us.
Ultimately capital punishment is not a deterrent, it serves only as vengeance. Personally I think a whole life rotting in a horrible prison and fading into obscurity is a worse punishment. Death is the easy way out.

Yes, I don't think we should have capital punishment in the UK because people would not find someone guilty if they thought they could be killed and as you say mistakes happen.

But I have no objection to other countries killing someone who has killed as it is up to them what they do in their own countries.

Not many people admit on a thread when they’ve changed their mind. I admire that.

What do you think it was that caused that?

Anyone who does complain about the methods in the ME should have a good hard think about it.

There is nothing wrong with Saudis chopping off arms or public executions in Iran if the result of breaking laws which come with this penalty. Presumably the perpetrators knew that going in and thought what they were going to do to some innocent was worth the risk.

They have the same right to impose penalties that we do. What we personally feel about it is beside the point.

if Iran does it to the innocent then that is wrong, but that's a separate issue.

As for being a paraplegic that is irrelevant unless you think disability gives someone a right to commit crimes without consequences.

I doubt anyone in this country who has a disability would claim immunity on those grounds.

getupdostuffgotobed · 09/10/2026 20:42

Can they stoop any lower? Almost certainly.

And will in the next couple of years.

I could suggest almost anything and it would acquire plausibility.

So I’ll offer…..
pay to view
offer places to become one of the firing squad, a raffle or just pay.
a camera close to the accused to show his view of the proceedings.

HangingOver · 09/10/2026 20:43

Will it be free to watch watch? Pay-per-view? Can we comment as it’s happening? Can they invite sponsors? Will they have a host?
After show?

Oh my god can you imagine. We're truly in black mirror.

Waitingfordoggo · 09/10/2026 20:47

@LastTrainsEast I’ve had a good hard think about execution and punishment methods in some ME countries and I find them abhorrent. Now what?

rememberingthem · 09/10/2026 20:47

A friend of mine was murdered a few years ago and the killer actually killed himself when hunted down and surrounded by police. All friends and family agree that it is better that hes dead and gone so he can just be forgotten like he never existed. Hes not in jail trying appeal after appeal or constantly being written about in the media. Hes in a neglected, forgotten grave where he belongs. I am definitely pro the death penalty because of the peace it brings to the family and friends of the victims, however live streaming it is sick and warped.

If there were capital punishment in the UK, I'd acquit rather than send someone to the gallows.

maxslice · 09/10/2026 21:13

It’s wrong and it’s grotesque. Executions should not be considered entertainment.

Spiderx · 09/10/2026 15:25

It only has to happen once to your family member. Don't feel so immune and confident that any of your family couldn't " lose it" and be in that situation . The world just doesn't work like that . Killing people is WRONG however your dress it up or WHATEVER " authority" you hide behind to excuse your actions.

What do you mean by 'lose it'?

Personally, I'm not legally in favour of the death penalty, but I'd be far more worried about a family member being a victim of a serious crime than I ever would them being falsely accused of one.
