Who’s got their heating on?

Anyone else managed to avoid putting the heating on yet? I don’t think I’ve got into October without using it before (that I can recall) - however this evening is the first I’ve felt I could do with it for an hour or so. But I’m enjoying saving a few quid for as long as I possibly can…

what’s everyone else doing??

Not yet, it was 20.9c inside yesterday, today its showing 18..3c at the moment - luckily sun on house so will warm up. West our heating at 18-18.5c, so doubt it'll come on anyway.

I've got a cold, had a shower this morning and was OK. Admittedly I've got a warmer top on today though.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/10/2026 09:58

Ours in on a thermostat so it kicks in automatically. It hasn't come on yet though. Apparently it's 20 degrees in the house right now.

GasPanic · 08/10/2026 11:19

Don't use the heating until the day/night average on the Beeb weather goes below 10C.

When it does for more than a couple of days the house needs some heating.

So far it has dipped close to that where I am, but not gone through it for any prolonged period. Temperature in the house has stayed above 18C and I don't see that changing until at least after Oct 20th. Last year I didn't need the heating on until mid November although sometimes used heated throws/extra blankets before them. Making sure the blinds are open at the correct time really helps warm up the house with the sun. Solar power FTW.

The weather is really mild this year so the lack of heating required allows me to build a war chest for when and if the temperatures get really low.

Ours is always on, it is on programmable thermostat all year round and comes on according to that. Came on for the first time this autumn on Sunday morning (set to 16 from 7-9) and last night (set to 18 in the evenings). Still got the back door open all day when we are at home it's not that cold here during the day.

cuckoolodger · 08/10/2026 11:27

Last year my heating was on in early September but arrived Easter we got the windows replaced. WOW! Best thing I’ve ever done and not had the heating on since! Even now, Pele come into my house and comment on how warm it OSS and that’s honestly just from the people that live here and the tumble dryer/oven etc. I’m hoping I can get another month before I turn it on.

Doppe · 08/10/2026 11:32

I have a little bungalow and my heating comes on automatically if the temp gets too low - its come on a few times in the last week or so, and thank god for it! I feel the cold and am always well wrapped up but once I've got cold it takes me ages to warm up. It was 3 degrees here this morning and unfortunately I am currently housesitting in a big old house and it was FREEZING!

Blackbird2409 · 08/10/2026 12:12

Put it on last night but set to 18 degrees whereas I normally have it at least 21. It was cold last night!

Its 22 / 21 in my house and feels cold, but im blaming that on getting used to 37 in the summer.

My heating is not going on until the house hits say 16. I'd rather save the money for when its consistently colder. But I might fire it up to check it still works. The boiler broke a few months ago

That's very good advice. Our boiler ticked away on hot water all summer. The day we asked the heating to kick in it crashed. The plumber came it was actually the control panel that had gone so we had a new one. Was a cold time waiting for that to arrive and be fitted.

justasking111 · 08/10/2026 12:36

The hall said 16c this morning. Ran the shower extra hot and scurried to get dressed. Our sitting room faces south, the attached conservatory SSW So that really heats up. Just open the door to let the heat in later in the day in the winter. Kitchen SSW so that's okay mostly. Our bedrooms downstairs face NNE so are always cool which we like. Bedroom upstairs on the other hand faces SSW and is too hot for me.

ginasevern · 08/10/2026 12:46

I put mine on as soon as I got home last night. I was shivering most of the day. I know it's not really cold cold, but it's been so mild that the drop to 13/14c was a shock to the system. And I hate the cold and winter anyway.

BlossomLeaves · 08/10/2026 12:54

Our heat pump clicked in for a bit overnight for the first time this autumn, the thermostat is set for it to come on under 18.5 degrees

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2026 13:02

Went for a wee about 3am and house was warm. Bathroom radiator on

house is set I think at 16 at night so obv had dropped for it to click on

nothing worse getting from a warm bed and bum on a cold loo seat

Tinybirdie · 07/10/2026 23:14

10 degrees!!! Oh come on.

Probably talking competitive Fahrenheit, or possibly Kelvin.

Yes, always good to give it a test run just before you're to the stage when you regularly want it on. We found out our old boiler was caput when we first put it on - only ten years old and even manufacturer refused a premium rate call out. So had to go six weeks without heating until someone could replace for us.

notanothernamesurely · 08/10/2026 13:28

Mine came on today and one day last week. It is switched off and always has been from April-October (sometimes it’s very cold by now though)

LowlandLucky · 08/10/2026 13:45

S.W Scottish coast here and my heating hasn't been on yet. I was on the beach on Tuesday with a t-shirt and cropped jeans on. Nowhere near cold enough to light the fire.

patooties · 08/10/2026 13:47

Mine’s off but I lit the wood burner on Sunday as it was a cold miserable morning. Only had it on a couple of hours

Isobel201 · 08/10/2026 13:51

Heating has been coming on in the mornings (set to 21 degrees for a couple of hours) then goes down to 18 during the day.

Happychildless · 08/10/2026 14:00

Nope no heating onesie on and all windows wide open.

longtompot · 08/10/2026 14:17

Not yet as there is building works happening. But tbh, apart from yesterday evening when I thought a log fire would have been nice, it's not really been cold enough.
Once the chimney has been swept and we've sorted out the puppy cage around the wood burner as I feel she is highly likely to hurt herself on it, then I am looking forward to a nice glass of red in front of it 🍷

Greenlawnbrownlawn · 08/10/2026 15:06

These threads crop up every year, and I'm never sure what it all means, it so depends on personal preference, where you are in the country, attitude to cost.

Our heating is always "on", the thermostat is set to 21 so in summer the radiators are off, as it gets colder they come on.

I always think a much more interesting question (and one that sort of gets answered anyway) is "what room temperature do you need to be comfortable in your house?" I know that even then it depends if you're sitting reading or active, but from the responses here and previously that varies from 10 (!) °C to mid 20s.

If I'm sat reading in the evening anything under 22 is too cold and my fingers get very cold and stiff (arthritis).

Anyway I do love the way that people get so affronted if someone 's personal preference differs to someone else's. It's a personal choice!

TwoTigers · 08/10/2026 15:25

We just leave it on timed all year, set to 18c (then occasionally boosting if we're chilly/have people staying) - hasn't come on yet. I've got a couple of room temperature gauges and they've both gone up over 1c today - currently 19.3c in lounge which is good for us. I find the air feels hot and stuffy if it's too hot.

WhatNextImScared · 09/10/2026 20:40

Not yet, still, but I’ve just put a massive jumper and velour trackies on

queenceleste · 09/10/2026 20:54

Ours is on! But we do both feel the cold!
