Who’s got their heating on?

Anyone else managed to avoid putting the heating on yet? I don’t think I’ve got into October without using it before (that I can recall) - however this evening is the first I’ve felt I could do with it for an hour or so. But I’m enjoying saving a few quid for as long as I possibly can…

what’s everyone else doing??

Sure I had it on in Aug

was a cold wet day so put on for 20 mins and house warmed up

if i am cold it’s coming on. Cats are always grateful for a warm radiator

SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 07/10/2026 21:13

Not yet, but DD feels the cold terribly and hates getting up for school under any circumstances so I will probably set it come on for an hour in the mornings soon as she gets up at 6.30, and the evening will follow soon after. Today was the first day it felt chilly outside to me

Roxy237 · 07/10/2026 21:13

I would usually have at least tested the heating out by now, but I haven’t even felt tempted yet. Hoping to hold out at least another week and save some money!

DanceMumTaxi · 07/10/2026 21:14

Yes loads of times. Need to get washing dry and the house has been chilly at times. I hate being cold and it feels damp if the house is cold.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/10/2026 21:16

SW London here, grey wet and miserable (weather, not me) got the windows shut for the first time in months and had my little halogen heater on in the sitting room for an hour.

aminchargeist · 07/10/2026 21:18

Yes heating on here Straight on as soon as got home from work . Had a fan on a couple of nights ago because it was so warm overnight!

Me too. I really am not the sort of person who sits under blankets with hats on etc rather than put on the heating. I know some people simply cant afford to, but these threads always bring out the competitive cold sufferers!

Popped it for an hour today. I was cold and also to check all working ok before we really need it

The great British tradition of trying to delay putting the heating on as long as possible.

😂😂 gosh I didn’t even think about this but yes I am inadvertently doing it. If money was no issue I’m not sure I would bother holding off but I’m already thinking oooh wonder if I can do another week 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ours is never off, it’s set to between 16 and 18 degrees from 6am - 10pm and 12 degrees overnight. I noticed the other morning the bathroom towel radiator was warm so it must have dipped below 12 overnight! House is old and we are semi rural and detached so no neighbours to keep us warm.
DM has had hers blasting since mid September

HeddaGarbled · 07/10/2026 21:25

We’re on oil and we just checked and it’s £560 for 500 litres, so we’re going to tough it out a bit longer. We’ll have to get some before Christmas, though.

I’ve just paid £800 for 600 litres

PrettyLittleRose · 07/10/2026 21:32

No, not yet. Not cold enough. If you have it on now, you won't appreciate it when it's really cold. It's only early October.

Hedgesgalore · 07/10/2026 21:35

Put the heating on earlier for a few hours, it went very chilly quite quickly here this evening (Wales).

My aga got switched back on today, such good timing, its toasty in the kitchen now

Popovf · 07/10/2026 21:37

Yes trying to keep comfy.
Vest tomorrow if weather like today.

itsgettingatadchill · 07/10/2026 21:41

I put it on tonight for the first time, Was hoping to leave it for as long as possible as I know it’s going to be an expensive winter!

AutumnLeavesAndRaindrops · 07/10/2026 21:43

Ours came on a couple of times during summer. It’s set to 18 and has been on and off the past few weeks, it was chilly outside this morning and the house was toasty for getting up. I absolutely refuse to live in a house that feels cold having grown up with ice on the inside of windows and lino on the floors, I never understand the race to the bottom on here to hold off putting heating on if you can afford it.

BrilliantBetty · 07/10/2026 21:43

I usually have it on by the end of September. I’ve been known to be as early as the start of September some years. This year our house is hot, got new windows. Wouldn’t even be considering it, it’s 21 degrees inside.

SirChenjins · 07/10/2026 21:45

Yep - ours has been on for a few weeks now. I had to defrost the car this morning, there was ice on the windscreen. Winter is definitely on its way - yuck.

Seems to be a mixed bag! I’m comfortable under a fleece blanket on the sofa and had a heated blanket over my knees when working from home earlier but went out to complete a home visit and they had their heating on so just got me thinking. It’s definitely chilly but I will hold off as long as possible and wouldn’t dream of putting it on all day and night, don’t know how people can afford it (I wish I could!)

I don’t have on all day and night but if cold putting it on for 20mins or so really helps. Warms house up

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 07/10/2026 21:48

I’m north and my thermometer reading 22 degrees and I’ve had all windows open, still have my summer duvet on. Usually have the heating on from end of aug it’s so bizarre

YourLoftyCyanZebra · 07/10/2026 21:48

Not yet but I live in a flat with good ish insulation and lots of glass. It's not got colder than 5° here yet and we both run pretty cool here. I have ordered new water bottles and a draught excluder snake. I will probaby have to cave in as I don't have a tumble drier and my airer has collapsed on the bottom third.

Concernedfriend2023 · 07/10/2026 21:48

No, not yet. Today is the first day I've felt a bit chilly. I've still had every window open all through the day, and bedroom ones 24/7. I just plan have them open less and hopefully will make it to November this year. If the kids say they're cold, that's when I'll put it on. But they're still wandering around in shorts and tshirts at the minute!

smallsilvercloud · 07/10/2026 21:50

It went on today for the first time when I got home from work, October is quite late for me, usually September it goes on.
