Who’s got their heating on?

Anyone else managed to avoid putting the heating on yet? I don’t think I’ve got into October without using it before (that I can recall) - however this evening is the first I’ve felt I could do with it for an hour or so. But I’m enjoying saving a few quid for as long as I possibly can…

what’s everyone else doing??

19 degrees that’s warm!! Would only put heating on if it fell below 10 degrees - jeez…. I hate stuffy homes -

10 degrees!!! Oh come on.

FrustratedApples · 07/10/2026 23:18

Needs to be a lot colder for us to consider it. I did properly close some of the windows though.

I’m in the north, still wandering about outside in shorts, sleeping with my window open etc. I expect it’ll change soon enough, but we are still cosy and content without the heating on.

I also also sleep with the window open
It's always cosy under the covers
Easier to sleep when it's cool at night
The only downside is when you have to get up in the morning

22! My DH would melt. Ours kicks in at 18 and he still moans then. Your bill must be massive.

My child is on palliative care. A heating bill is the least of my worries

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/10/2026 23:52

My phone says “feels like 0” currently here in NE Scotland. We have the living room and kitchen radiators on low, but the others are turned right down even if it does kick in. The cats are pleased!

elm26 · 07/10/2026 23:54

Ours is set to 18 all year round. It’s 22 inside at the minute according to thermostats. We are in a new build though and well insulated. Plus we are SE so milder weather for us. I’m ready for the cold weather though, I’m looking forward to putting the kids jarmies on the radiators ready for after bath etc, makes me feel all cosy. I do like to keep windows slightly open all year round though and can’t sleep if my bedroom window is closed, I do close the kids windows at night from around November to end of March and have them open in the day for a few hours instead.

WhatNextImScared · 07/10/2026 23:55

Refusing til november. Told the kids today it wouldn’t the going on til after Halloween.

Hollyhobbi · 08/10/2026 00:05

I notice a few people have their log burners lit this evening. Sure isn’t that heating too?

Bryonyberries · 08/10/2026 00:08

Bedroom showing 14c - was freezing when came in compared to this morning. No heating but have shut window for first time in weeks. I prefer a cooler bedroom so duvet will be enough. But is a shock after such lovely warm autumn weather so far here.

SnowFrogJelly · 08/10/2026 00:44

Me!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/10/2026 05:38

Put it on last evening and I’ve just put it on again, as it’s feeling cold.

I’ve got Rheumatoid Arthritis so hate being cold and don’t want to sit in the evening with a tonne of blankets and a sweatshirt when the heating will sort it.

swapsicles · 08/10/2026 06:51

Not yet, windows are still open, I'm in the midlands. It's a new build so well insulated. Only issue is I've no idea how to set the thermostat so will have to dig out the instructions!

SapphireOpal · 08/10/2026 06:56

17.5 this morning in the house and I was quite tempted but I've just stuck a jumper and fluffy socks on instead - I think we're nearly getting to the point where we'll put it on though

The great British tradition of trying to delay putting the heating on as long as possible.

I know. It makes me laugh when people can afford heating but think they achieve a moral victory by coping without it. Last year I read a post of someone saying they were in a t shirt, it was 12C but they were hot so had the kitchen door open!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 08/10/2026 07:13

We live in the South West and it’s definitely cooling down - though the wind is our issue here, just off the moors and so gets blustery which makes it feel a few degrees lower than the thermometer says it is!!

We don’t have any central heating in the house we rent although there are a couple of ancient (installed when house was built in early 1970’s ancient) night storage heaters downstairs that do nothing to actually heat the house so we’ve never used them and they’re turned off at the fuse board; instead, we have a couple of oil filled radiators dotted strategically round the house and have a thermal curtain up in the doorway between the living and dining rooms, ready for the winter. We also have heated blankets for the sofa and our bed plus the kids and I have Oodies we can use - DH rarely feels the cold and didn’t want one, he would just throw a jacket on if he got cold!

We haven’t needed to use them yet this autumn, although I did think yesterday morning that we might want to start putting them on in the morning before the kids get up for school as it felt cool downstairs. We also still have bedroom windows open at night and, right now, the Gro Egg in our bedroom is saying it’s 22.1c which is plenty warm enough.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/10/2026 07:18

Currently lying in bed waiting for the place to warm up before I get up because the Hive said 14.5 when I woke up! 🥶

DeftGoldHedgehog · 08/10/2026 07:19

Nope (Kent)

LaughingLemur · 08/10/2026 07:19

Very frosty outside this morning here and 13 degrees in the kitchen so I've given in and put the heating on.

Jellybean23 · 08/10/2026 07:32

Not yet. I’m hoping for more sun to heat the lounge during the day. The electric blanket is back on the bed and ready to go.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/10/2026 07:33

Ours came on this morning for the first time 🎉

It’s left to the thermostat to decide when it needs to come on and off, otherwise I’d probably have it on much more when a pair of socks and a jumper would be far cheaper to keep me warm!

I am so sorry to hear that.

ProteinFibreHaribos · 08/10/2026 08:42

Not yet, although I did light the log burner yesterday evening.
It’s our first year with air to air heat pumps, so we’re hoping to make it through the winter with them ( solar running them) and the log burner. I’ll report back, if it’s a success.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 08/10/2026 08:48

Its 22 / 21 in my house and feels cold, but im blaming that on getting used to 37 in the summer.

My heating is not going on until the house hits say 16. I'd rather save the money for when its consistently colder. But I might fire it up to check it still works. The boiler broke a few months ago

Sartre · 08/10/2026 08:55

It came on automatically yesterday evening. It was pretty cold here yesterday and is again today so has come on again. Haven’t needed it until this point.

Snackpocket · 08/10/2026 08:56

Thermostat is set to 19 so it came on briefly last night and this morning. I can’t bear being cold and have built up a good amount in my energy account over summer so happy to have it on!
