Who’s got their heating on?

Anyone else managed to avoid putting the heating on yet? I don’t think I’ve got into October without using it before (that I can recall) - however this evening is the first I’ve felt I could do with it for an hour or so. But I’m enjoying saving a few quid for as long as I possibly can…

what’s everyone else doing??

Central scotland here and my husband is still using the fans whilst im fucking frozen 🥶🥶.

I find feeling comfortably warm helps me (fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis), so my tolerance is possibly less than other people. I also feel that keeping the house above a baseline (for me 18) overnight and during the bulk of the day when I’m active means that when the heating kicks in it doesn’t need to be on for as long. I’m lucky that my kitchen is south facing and has bifold doors across the end and I can take advantage of the heat from the sun. I do like it to be warm first thing and in the evening when I’m not doing as much though, so I like it to be 21 at those times.
I only set up my programmable thermostat yesterday (moved in in early June) as it’s now cooling down and felt the need for some warmth.

I've had mine on for a week. I don't care about cost. I'll cut down on snacks or other unnecessary costs.

HoppityBun · 07/10/2026 22:06

Mine’s not on and won’t be going on for a while l but I have an electric blanket and I wear a thick fleece in the house

Saz12 · 07/10/2026 22:17

We're on oil, and its just eye-wateringly expensive at the minute! No chance its going on just yet. Old house, Scotland, light frost overnight, woodburner lit....

Gourdgirl · 07/10/2026 22:17

Had mine on for a couple of hours 5pm. Electric blanket on too.
I will not be cold in my house.

Keepgettingolder81 · 07/10/2026 22:19

My bloody DH, I hate it!
it dries the air and makes you lethargic.
put a jumper on!!

MaryFromGlasgow · 07/10/2026 22:20

My house is 19-21C without heating currently. Thermostat is set at 18 during the day and 16 overnight so it hasn’t come on yet. My windows are all still on vent too.

tillyandmilly · 07/10/2026 22:23

19 degrees that’s warm!! Would only put heating on if it fell below 10 degrees - jeez…. I hate stuffy homes -

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 07/10/2026 22:23

I haven't even got a duvet in my duvet cover yet!

purpleme12 · 07/10/2026 22:25

I put it on for about 20 minutes but it was just to dry some clothes

Squidgemoon · 07/10/2026 22:31

Good god no. Well insulated new build in the SE and most nights we’ve still been putting our air con on to cool the bedrooms down. We’ve had the patio doors open most days and I don’t think I’ve put a jumper on since about April. I’m quite looking forward to it getting cooler now and want it to hurry up.

sherbetlemonade · 07/10/2026 22:32

It has turned darned chilly this evening, but so far I have resisted the temptation to turn the thermostat up. It is set to 17.5 and the boiler hasn't had to leap into action so far. The current temperature in the living room is 20.7 so we have a little way to go yet.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 07/10/2026 22:35

This is the first night I've been tempted but I put a jumper and a pair of socks on instead. My electric blanket has been on the last few weeks though.

placemats · 07/10/2026 22:38

Gas direct debit has gone up to £100 pcm, from £70 and I haven't had the heating on since the start of May.

Growlybear83 · 07/10/2026 22:41

I've had mine on for the last few nights. We've recently moved and I've not quite mastered the new thermostat - it keeps resetting itself to 21 degrees and I can't work out how to increase it so it stays at 23.

Copperoliverbear · 07/10/2026 22:59

I have the heated clothes horse on. Cheaper than the heating.

HPD76 · 07/10/2026 23:06

I’m in the north, still wandering about outside in shorts, sleeping with my window open etc. I expect it’ll change soon enough, but we are still cosy and content without the heating on.

justasking111 · 07/10/2026 23:06

Been warm here until today. So I wore a jumper, threw a dressing gown over the top at 5. Lit the log burner at 7. I'd be too hot if the heating was on though.

TubeScreamer · 07/10/2026 23:08

No. I haven’t felt cold yet.

with oil prices what they are we will be resisting for as long as possible

queenceleste · 07/10/2026 23:09

Not yet!
I told DH to put on another layer and to stop being such a southern Jessie

BobbleBear · 07/10/2026 23:11

No heating on but I do have my electric blanket on to warm the bed for 10 mins and make it toasty. I keep the windows open though as I like fresh air in the bedroom.

The great British tradition of trying to delay putting the heating on as long as possible.

Don’t worry it’s also a tradition in Ireland! Came back from Spain last Friday where it was about 28 with mad humidity and had to turn on the heating! And was wfh today and it’s been on twice. My daughter who doesn’t usually feel the cold was also cold!

Tinybirdie · 07/10/2026 23:12

I refuse to be cold in my house. My heating will go on regardless of what month it is if I am feeling cold.
