School called about my eight-year-old's violent behaviour, what should I do?

I've just had a phone call from the school to ask me to pick my child up. He's been misbehaving all day - going around and pretending to shoot people, dragging his fingers over his throat in a "slit your throat" gesture and to top it all off, he stabbed another child with a pencil because she was annoying him.

He's eight and has spent the afternoon in isolation because his behavior has been so bad. He's also been excluded from after school club because they don't have the staff there to cope with his behavior.

I genuinely have no idea why or where he's got the gestures from- we don't watch violent stuff and it's something I've never seen any of my immediate family do.

I'm a single mum with another older boy and I'm just at a total loss of what to do next. School are putting a plan into place to give him more support and I'm planning to make an appointment with my GP to discuss things but I don't know how to manage his behavior and to help him. I'm reading the books recommend on my other thread and have been using the things I've learned but I can't see any change on his behavior.

I'd be extremely for any help or advice please!

Is he online? Does he have access to a phone or computer? Is he gaming? Does he have contact with his dad? This all has to be coming from somewhere. What has led up to this? It seems unlikely he was happy and well behaved then this call came out of the blue… poor chap sounds like he’s going through some kind of turmoil.

Any SEN ? What's his behaviour at home and how long has bad behaviour been going on ?

always be calm and make them understand with an example of yours, where you are making them understand and also not scaring, may be if you might need to make up a story. but try to make them understand.

Are you the OP who posted a thread yesterday about the school asking you to collect half hour early?

Moreorleaswhatiexpected · 01/10/2026 14:15

Is his dad in the picture at all? How much older is your other son?

Agreed upon, need to work on this.

Error404FucksNotFound · 01/10/2026 14:16

What other similar behaviours have you seen and how do you deal with them?

itispersonal · 01/10/2026 14:16

Has there been any changes in circumstances at home and at school. To make feel so angry.
Try and have a chat with him and see if he can tell you what is making him angry dysregulated.

Are you noticing any traits of any SEN- Autism, adhd, sensory processing, PAD etc at home.

Hopefully you, the school and your child can work together to solve things and help calm and regulated behaviours.

He sees his dad every weekend (his dad works away during the week). Gaming yes, but only on his tablet, supervised and for 30-1hour per day. No phone or computer.

He still seems perfectly normal at home; it's school where his behavior had deteriorated and he's really struggling.

No diagnosed SEN. We're getting that started now. He's been mostly fine at school until this term where his behavior has deteriorated dramatically.

There was one incident last year where he was disruptive in class but both my mum and dad were in hospital at the time and I think he was picking up on my worry and anxiety.

That's what I've been doing, and we've been using social stories too.

Edited

He sees his dad every weekend. Older brother is ten.

Could he be struggling academically?

RomeoRivers · 01/10/2026 15:26

I think you need to remove all gaming/internet privileges indefinitely.

Sit down and talk to him to try and work out where this is coming from, or what is causing him to act this way.

purplecorkheart · 01/10/2026 15:28

Is his Dad going out when he has the boys and leaves them with a babysitter. A friend of mine had that with her ex leaving their kids with a babysitter when he had the kids for the weekend. Babysitter used to leave them watch over 18 movies.

CeciliaMars · 01/10/2026 16:07

Is it the kind of gaming where he can communicate with others?

Thats true, keeping engaged with same age group and playing and getting around will be a great help as well, agreed upon.

Aknifewith16blades · 01/10/2026 16:55

Has his teacher changed OP? He sounds very unhappy, I'm wondering what changed this this term for him.

I meant it in a different way - is he communicating with someone he shouldn't be? Gaming platforms like Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft and Discord are common entry points for offenders and groomers.

TFImBackIn · 01/10/2026 17:20

What is his dad like with him? Your son really needs to talk things through with someone - are you able to talk to your ex about this?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/10/2026 17:44

They have isolation in primary? Do you mean a Thrive room or similar
?

Savvysix1984 · 01/10/2026 17:47

Remove all online/ gaming activity. This is typical for stuff they see, even on games that are meant to be tame.
