I've just put it on and fucking hell Braverman, rewriting history or what.
The home secretary who dodged the grooming gangs issue when home secretary and screwed over the prison service is blaming everyone except herself.

Fault of police check
Fault of colleagues in the cabinet check
Fault of conservatives (I agree with this btw) except she is conveniently forgetting she was a part of it.

She really is ridiculous.

You'd think Farage would give up his boycotting of the BBC to stop her making a fool of herself.

MsJinks · 02/10/2026 07:31

First cat tax in a while - new addition to our family though my daughter says I can’t steal her and they’re keeping her - why don’t kids do as you tell them these days?

This is possibly just Labour testing the waters, but it goes against what Burnham said in his speech about not resorting to "crude cuts". It does say changes would not affect the most severely disabled, but what does that mean?

I don't get this targeting by age. If you're disabled, you're disabled. DS is 23. He will always be disabled. But he works, what more do they want?

It’s all about extending the field of targets.

If sections of your voter base leans towards deriding a particular group it makes sense to lay the nation’s problems with them

Disabled ✅ Young ✅

Exactly, pointy. Same applies to the upper age cut off. Do people suddenly stop being disabled at 60?

I don't like this at all. Especially targeting the under 25s. It buys into the rhetoric that there are hordes of young people malingering.

SerendipityJane · 02/10/2026 09:39

I don't like this at all. Especially targeting the under 25s.

It's a very subtle way of taking agency away. And we all know it will hit women hardest. Especially if we were awake when we heard family stories of grandmothers and aunts whose fathers refused permission to go to university and that was that (since you needed parental consent till the age oi 25).

I am already reading the proposal that the parents of single mothers will be expected to cover their costs rather then the state. And it's no less disgusting for being written in comic sans.

Have been watching the Marble Hall Murders which has a part setting in Corfu and the old town. Looks gorgeous 🥰

Glad to hear that your husband is getting a quick appointment and hope all goes well.

Your Irish background sounds fantastic @dontcallmelen

dontcallmelen · 02/10/2026 10:43

cardibach · 02/10/2026 11:13

Corfu Town is gorgeous. Went with choir a couple of years ago

BIossomtoes · 02/10/2026 11:45

My view of Corfu is clouded by catching a heavy cold on the flight over and torrential rain for the first three days. Maybe we should give it another chance.

Evenstar · 02/10/2026 12:41

Corfu is on my list to visit, DH and I were supposed to go on our first ever cruise along the Croatian coast in May with stopovers in Corfu at either end. Once I get back on my feet a bit after my house move etc I might well book it again. It would be nice to do it for him too.

That would be a lovely thing to do.

I’d understand a lot more of this if you’d written it in Welsh.

(I don’t speak a word of Welsh).

I was just about to ask what language they were speaking in 😂

LizzieW1969 · 02/10/2026 12:56

I’ve been to Corfu once, when I was a young adult. I remember that it was back in 1989, just before Eastern Europe opened up; we looked out over Albania, which was still under Communism at the time.

I’d love to go again sometime. We went to Samos back in 2023.

DuncinToffee · 02/10/2026 13:07

We went to Croatia at the Dalmation coast and I don't think I ever seen as many cruise ships as in Split.

We have only been to Crete in Greece.

We were talking about Yugoslavia the other day and thinking back about the time before the Berlin Wall came down.

I did island hopping in Greece twice in my early twenties so have been to quite a few islands. Love almost all of them. Enjoyed the Kassandra peninsula of the mainland this spring too. Montenegro also gorgeous in terms of ex-USSR places that are definitely worth a visit. I’d say not by cruise in this case as the nicer places are a bit small to handle them (having been in Kotor town when a ship was in v when one wasn’t).

LittleBowSheep · 02/10/2026 14:09

I love Greece. Started backpacking around the islands in 2000 and have been to 70 islands so far. So many more still to see.

dontcallmelen · 02/10/2026 14:25

Our first time in corfu, surprised at how lovely it was we could clearly see Albania from where we were staying, have been to northern & southern Cyprus a few times both brilliant in a very different way Rhodes many years ago do remember Rhodes town being very beautiful kefalonia was also stunning remember watching a bit of the Queens funeral at a rather lovely beach bar.
Dh back from the doctors, blood & bowel tests next week & CT scan & camera should be within two weeks in the meantime have given him some meds which hopefully will alleviate some symptoms when the nhs works it is a thing of wonder.

placemats · 02/10/2026 15:16

Also did island hopping in Greece in my early 20s. A week in Athens, day trip to Delphi and a Bacchus wine festival (can still remember the hangover). Then Poros, two trips to the Peloponnese; Lemonodasos and a Greek theatre production. Then Spetses where on a remote beach accessible by boat only, Eric Clapton bought us a drink.

placemats · 02/10/2026 15:28

Good to hear the positive update about your husband @dontcallmelen

Evenstar · 02/10/2026 15:40

Hope it’s positive news after the tests and he is more comfortable with the medication in the meantime @dontcallmelen 💐

Byline Times has been banned from the Tory conference for the second year.

No one has ever explained why outlets that are banned don't just make shit up and post it as truth. If it happens to reach an audience and maybe outshout the official message ... well what a shame.

Obviously nothing libellous. But a story that KEMIS TORIES SET TO BAN BAGPUSS that starts trending and forcing them to rebuff it, rather than peddle their hate would be a thing of beauty.

A good place to start would be an AIBU thread 😎
