I have never been to a panto.

Well you've not missed out on anything. Had to endure one at a school production years ago.

Brilliant. It's what I think of the conversation Badenoch has with herself every day.

Llttledrummergirl · 04/10/2026 23:07

Apparently all bombers have been removed from Fairford and returned to America.
I am so pleased. No more being woken up at stupid o'clock with low flying planes.

Efacsen · 04/10/2026 23:09

Never been to a panto and no desire to do so either

Abolish the Environment Agency and Natural England is another of their new ideas.

Apparently they can then build the houses they failed to build in their last 14 years.

And build the 3rd runway at Heathrow.

Good morning.

Thanks for sharing @placemats . That is a good article.

But talk of a “Keminaissance” misses the point: it means little that the electorate are slightly less put off by the captain if they still wouldn’t get on the ship for fear of drowning.

Is very well put. As is:

It [the no booze n'fags debit card for benefits claimants idea] is less a substantive socioeconomic policy and more a wink to the audience, a casual cruelty that would make already hard lives even harder for the vague promise of a point in the polls. That Badenoch presumably genuinely believes in this stuff is a grim added bonus.

And create another 50,000 prison places. Which seems to me like an open admission that they don’t intend to do anything to tackle crime even if they somehow found the money from somewhere.

I did a bit of research yesterday. It appears that of the two million people who earn more than £100k around 5% have children under school age. So the Kemistry flagship policy is aimed at around 100,000 people in specific short term circumstances. And she thinks it’s a vote winner.

It's quite a bizarre choice of flagship policy to promote at conference.

Of course the US has a prison industry.Where companies are given free labo(u)r and the profits thereof.

countrygirl99 · 05/10/2026 09:58

If you have more hungry people you get more crime so you need more prison spaces. Logic innit.

And what if your profits are proportional to the number of people in prison ?

As always and ever, the first question is

CUI BONO ?

countrygirl99 · 05/10/2026 10:13

Starve the hoi poloi and then make a profit from it. Genius.

People want more pollution and worse air quality.

Are they absolutely sure about that?

(I suppose the anti ULEZ bombers and the twerps moaning about 20 mph limits may well want more pollution and worse air quality.)

So for 14 years they closed prisons and didn't open more but now have magically realised their mistake? Fast learners.

Bearing in mind ULEZ seems to have dramatically improved the health of children in London, the real question for Kemi is

"Why do you hate children ?"

But had done the maths to show what a silly idea it is? That’s what reporters should be doing

cardibach · 05/10/2026 11:56

Re the Fairford bombers - Trump seems to have this weird idea that US bases in Europe are for our benefit, when in fact we allow them to be here in order to potent themselves.

Indeed. ULEZ and other clean air policies have made a difference I can see from my own experience. In my 20s if I went to London I’d come home, blow my nose and find - excuse the image - black snot in my tissue. That doesn’t happen anymore. The air is patently obviously cleaner.

countrygirl99 · 05/10/2026 12:34

I used to hate going to London, I used to come home feeling filthy but it's quite pleasant now.

placemats · 05/10/2026 13:16

London is the place to be. Loved working and living there. Plus my two daughters were born there. One is now living there.

It's the best city in the world.

DuncinToffee · 05/10/2026 13:50

Two people have died and two more have been injured trying to cross the Channel in a small boat, French authorities have said, while 12 anti-migrant protesters on England’s south coast were arrested after what police described as “violent disorder” as they opposed the rescue of nearly 150 more people on a second vessel.

Referring to the 12 arrests, Hampshire and Isle of Wight police said there had been assaults on a police officer and on an emergency worker, as well as affray and racially aggravated public order offences.

London really does feel a lot cleaner, even in recent heatwaves was no yellow smog hanging in the skies like it was twenty years ago.
