Maggie May as I’m wheeled in . My name is Maggie and the first line says ‘wake up Maggie’ it’s written in my will

Musicaltheatremum · 30/09/2026 18:43

My friend who lost her husband had the ski Sunday theme played at the end of the service. It was hilarious and uplifting at the end of a very traumatic time. He was in his 40s and died of a brain tumour.

Simple Minds - dont you forget about me...

Weald56 · 30/09/2026 18:44

My wife and I are currently thinking of songs/poems/readings we would like at our (humanist) funerals.

At the moment I am favouring three songs/pieces of music

  1. As coffin is brought in Show of Hands: “Port Isaac” (Instrumental from ‘The Path’)
  2. As the coffin disappears from sight The Byrds: “Turn, Turn, Turn” (Written by Pete Seeger)
  3. At the end John Lennon: “Imagine”

He ain't heavy, he's my brother, was played at one funeral i attended, also my way, by sinatra, bit of a cliché

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/09/2026 18:46

I've written a rough guide to what I want, and given it to one of my adult DC. I don't have any family apart from them, so there's not a lot of people around to say 'Bats always loved this' or 'this always makes me think of Bats'. It has links and everything 😂 I've also told him he can change anything he likes, it's just a steer. Having organised both my parents funerals, knowing what the person wants is really helpful.

So - entrance music Flower Duet by Delibes, music for contemplation - At the River, Groove Armada, and the going out music What the World Needs Now is Love. I'm pretty old school 😂😂😂

@CrystalSingerFanGreat choice (even though most people like it for weddings)

Thanks! Oddly, that's why I like it. As I'm single, I'd like to go out on a high. (Apart from being dead, and not actually listening.)

BambinaCucina · 30/09/2026 18:47

I love Highland Cathedral.

But also special mention to should I stay or should I go now, there she goes and born to raise he'll 😂

I think I might know you!

I don't know you (how does anyone know a poster?) but I like that! Xx

@CrystalSingerFan I absolutely love that! I haven't heard it in years, thank you. X

Invisible Thread by The Divine Comedy
It's about parenthood, ageing and the fact you never really let go. And I'm a crafter who like seeing so it's very apt.

I did mention "For Good" from Wicked to my daughter but she said absolutely not or she'll never be able to listen to it again. Which I get. I still cry when I hear the song played at my nanna funeral and that was 20 years ago.

Bohemian rhapsody

JuniperKeats · 30/09/2026 18:54

I wouldn’t have a funeral

DorotheaShottery · 30/09/2026 18:58

Conversely, I’ve just seen the pain of a bereaved wife who lost her DH far too young and unexpectedly. The DC are too young to be involved. On top of her grief, she has the torment of not knowing what kind of funeral her DH would want

That's why I don't buy this "funerals are for the living" guff. Fine if your mum died aged 90 but for many funerals are something to be endured before carrying on with grieving.

In the spirit of the thread though, I'll choose Landslide by Stevie Nicks.

smilingontheinside · 30/09/2026 19:00

Not having a funeral but have some favourite songs to be played at a party if there's anyone left to throw one. Don't fear the reaper is on the list 😉 I dont think it's morbid at all. My mother sorted her funeral a few years before she died and it made things so easy when the time came. I saw a video the other day where mourners were leaving the service all smiling and laughing as they walked out to "hunk of burning love" by Elvis 😁 Thats the sort of memory I want to leave 😉

Karsiyaka18 · 30/09/2026 19:09

Not having any children, I was asked by our solicitor what i would like done with my ashes. I told her, for all I care you can roll them up and smoke me.

MyM8Marmite · 30/09/2026 19:09

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

Not morbid at all imo. I would like Dido - I Want To Thank You For The Best Days Of My Life, It's Such A Perfect Day, and something by Queen - haven't decided which one yet.

RosieFoxRox · 30/09/2026 19:16

I want somewhere over the rainbow but the version by Isreal Kamakawiwo and One last look at the view by Will Varley

HarryGrotter · 30/09/2026 19:18

AnnaQuayRules · 30/09/2026 19:19

rageagainstthemachine72 · 30/09/2026 19:24

I was at a funeral last week and they ended the service with The Prodigy Out of Space (I'm gonna send him to outer space) it was great and made everyone smile.
