A bit morbid I know, sorry!
have you given this much thought? I know it sometimes pops into my head when I hear a song that moves me.

mine would be Blessings, by Hollow Coves. I think joyful and mellow. i love the lyrics

what’s yours?!
funny / sad / uplifting / depressing / dance anthem?

Jesu joy of man’s desiring on the organ for the coffin to be brought inside to, Lord is my shepherd (version used on vicar of dibley) how great thou art as every family member has that and make me a channel of your peace. CAntique de Jean Racine in the middle for reflection ideally sung by the choir Exit music might go classic rock with something like stairway to heaven but played on the organ . Service in church with dismissal at the porch, crematoria are depressing places? Our beautiful church is far nicer

squashyhat · 30/09/2026 14:21

Dust in the Wind - Kansas, Undertow - Genesis, Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel. All in my will with a promise from DH that he will do as I ask.

This is outing for anyone who knows me but Last Christmas, no matter the time of year!!🤣

I think I might know you!

ZenNudist · 30/09/2026 15:23

Definites:
Be still my Soul
I watched the sunrise

Used to want " abide with me ": a family funeral hymn but not so sure now...

possibly "sweet Sacrament divine"

Because the Lord is my shepherd for Psalm. Or the lords my shepherd maybe the Stuart townend version.

It would be good to have a worship song amongst the traditional. Currently like one called "kyrie eleison" , or one called "gratitude "

Non-religous I always wanted "one" by u2

Fancy a bit of enigma variations too. Nimrod a funeral classic for a reason but I like E.D.U. as it is the finale! I also like C.A.E.

I have loads, the service will need to be hours long. Some include, Green & Red of Mayo - Saw Doctors, Song of Freedom (Ood Song) from Doctor Who, Thank you for the Days - Kirsty McColl, Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum, I saw her standing there - The Beatles. And many, many more.

Ha - mine is ‘Meet me on Clare Island’ by The Saw Doctors.

We had Kirsty for my mums as well as Remember Me by Diana Ross and I will always love you by Dolly (never, ever Whitney)

I would have Johnny Flynn Detectorists song, Old Note by Lisa O’Neil - then ‘Have Fun’ and ‘I wanna be a cowboy’ by CMAT with compulsory audience participation for actions and dance for the last two. I might even leave cowboy hats on the pews. Also ESG ‘Dance’ would have to be shoehorned in somewhere. I agree with PP - less words more music

Into the West by Annie Lennox

Can you give me a clue how? 🤣 Some secret code word.

I probably don't know you to be fair, but i'm sure my sister would choose that song. If you are married does your husband's name begin with 'N'?

I am married but N is not my husband’s initial! Ah, shame! I looking forward to guessing who you were.🤣

Ah, I genuinely thought you were my sister. She adores Christmas and that particular song. I've never thought to ask her if she is on MN. You might be my sister..... I will keep a look out for a thread titled 'I've name changed for this, but I pretended I didn't know my sister AIBU?'

shellyleppard · 30/09/2026 17:34

One day like this by elbow for the reflection time. Then Def leppard switch 625 as the final song.... really raise the roof!!

rugbychick1 · 30/09/2026 17:43

Instinction or Lifeline by Spandau Ballet. Preferably the 12” versions (Spandau being my favourite band)
Devil Inside INXS or You’re The Voice by John Farnham (as a dual national these are my Australian choices)
The third choice changes. At the moment it’s Let Me Entertain You

A big ass toccata on a loud organ or Dies irae from Verdi's (?) requiem or Dream a little dream of me Mamas & Papas or Pink Floyd Shine on you crazy diamond

"A big ass toccata on a loud organ "

Well yes. Mine would be Arturo Barbaro playing Widor's Toccata.

Favourite version. Apologies to Mumsnetters who disaprove of links.

@CrystalSingerFanGreat choice (even though most people like it for weddings)

LLM21 · 30/09/2026 18:23

I recently attended a funeral and her chosen piece was sex bomb 😆 only a few us knew what was coming and certainly reminded everyone who we were there for, it lightened the mood which is just what she did day to day when she was here.

DanNW2025 · 30/09/2026 18:23

Half the world away. For the lyric “and if I could leave this planet, you know I’d stay but I just can’t stand it”. Falling apart this country and it kills me to see.

also, the curtains at the crematorium would need to close and open repeatedly to “should I stay or should I go now”

Sweetsadsong · 30/09/2026 18:26

Another one for Annie Lennox "Into the West"

Seacatt · 30/09/2026 18:27

@CrystalSingerFan I absolutely love that! I haven't heard it in years, thank you. X

Mattsmum2 · 29/09/2026 13:14

Agree with this completely. My mum died last year and we only had a couple of weeks with her at end of life. I think between my brother and I we did what we thought encompassed our mum well. Including, Thank you for the music, ABBA and Happy Birthday, Stevie Wonder as her funeral was her birthday too.

This is correct. The funeral isn't for the dead person, it's for the people left behind. Only a total narcissist would want to plan every detail of their funeral service.

CyanMaker · 30/09/2026 18:31

Siberianskies I love your sense of humorll

JenRummy · 30/09/2026 18:36

None. Have come full circle on whole funeral thing. Don’t want anything but simple private no fuss or frills internment. Friends can remember you as you were in much better ways.

WhitePudding · 30/09/2026 18:37

Don’t you forget about me - Simple Minds.

AlternativeMurmur · 30/09/2026 18:38

Something that I know full well most mourners will hate and have to sit through 😂
