Who should go to work tomorrow?

Today was my first day at a new job - one I am very lucky to have. I probably wouldn’t find another one as good again. Not going in tomorrow will look very, very bad and potentially jeopardise my job.
DP is a GP and has a 30 patient clinic tomorrow.

DD3 is ill. Some sort of virus, fever, headache, sore throat, no appetite. There’s no way she’ll be well enough for nursery tomorrow.

DP thinks I should stay home with her and I think he should. Up until this point I’ve been a SAHM so things like this weren’t an issue. He has never ever had to cancel work before.

Who gets to go to work tomorrow?

Agreed. Meanwhile the GP DP's high income is affording OP a decent standard of living and high social status ("my husband is a Doctor"!). So she is willing to play games with her 'copywriting' job - with starting salary of £24k and ceiling of c. £45k - which will soon be made irrelevant thanks to AI, just to make a point. So the locum GP gets blacklisted in the local area, and now has to travel 2 hours to his future shifts. If I were in the shoes of the husband, I will be very disappointed/frustrated that OP cannot see the big picture. Sad

The OP hasn't said anything about being married, which is rather important. Notice the thread title refers to DP.

Additionally, why do you think he's going to be blacklisted? OP has specified that there's high demand locally, which of course there is in some geographical areas. So actually, this is about the loss of £500 for this shift versus risking the loss of an entire salary from OP- I assume you don't think AI is going to take her job in the next few days?

Also, AI absolutely can, and should, vastly reduce the workload for GPs too. So whilst there is high demand now (which means he can easily take the time today) that won't necessarily continue.

Both of you. Find a carer to come in for the child.

SleevelessGreens · 29/09/2026 18:49

Isn’t there someone who could come in to look after her - grandparents? If not he should stay home and you’ll both have to suck up the list £500.

Databreach · 29/09/2026 18:53

Absolutely thrilled that you went to work op, well done!

hope your little one is feeling much better soon x

PeloMom · 29/09/2026 18:56

People here are baffling me. Emergency cover is all well and good but:

  1. how many people (strangers) will willingly be looking after someone else’s sick child?
  2. from my experience, a sick child this age wants and needs to be comfortable and around a parent, not a stranger

@NotSureICanDoIt How was your first day in your new job op? Hope it went well😀

What does it matter if they are married or not? They have a child, so they have a strong tie. Re. blacklisted - a locum's job is literally to cover for gaps in rota, a locum who takes a cover slot and then backs out without any notice at all will not be flavour of the month, and if the resourcing manager has other options, they will not want to rely on them in future. How hard is that to understand?

mimsdog100 · 29/09/2026 19:00

Fellow doctor here. He should go into work if this could jeopardise your new post.

In the future I’ll have a lot of flexibility and be able to WFH no problem. Just not yet.

Then he needs to suck it up this time especially! You need to get to work.

YonderlyYonderly · 29/09/2026 17:27

Of course - but if you're not, you can't not join a meeting because of the reasons mentioned above.

I am not disagreeing with you!!!

let’s leave it there.

CatSquirrelDuck · 29/09/2026 19:04

He loses £500 for the day while you potentially fail your probationary period.

You go to work ... you will soon be flexible and it's his turn to step up with childcare.

Jaw dropping responses from people with a village. All this talk of ‘having back up options’ and ‘discussing back up plans’…what back up options are there, pray tell, for parents without family help? You are privileged indeed if you have people in your life that have the capacity and willingness to take on a sick child for a whole day at short notice! So privileged, in fact, that it blinds you to your privilege.

asking a neighbour…I mean, really?!

in any other situation posters on mumsnet would be saying ‘you had your children, they’re your responsibility, it’s on you to sort them out!’

Edited

If we had the money, I would found a ad hoc service like bubble.com, there are others and got our child used to a home carer. .

We both have jobs that need reliable attendance and no village, but not so well paid we could afford a just in case nanny.

Zanussiforme · 29/09/2026 19:07

No one has mentioned the child. Most kids would prefer it be their mum looking after them when ill.

Those kinds of agencies don’t offer cover in many, many places in the uk.

This is the first post I’ve seen in which the welfare and wellbeing of the child is given any real consideration.

As usual all else must be sacrificed on the altar of female rights and supremacy in all matters - what a sad reflection on the current values of our society!

And I say that as both a female and a feminist.

How would the child’s welfare and wellbeing be impacted by being cared for by their GP father…?

Pumpkintopf · 29/09/2026 19:12

Well done op. I hope you’ve had a good day at work. 🥰

The day has been and gone now

Mine didn't mind... you know why? Because we both dropped our hours after my maternity leave, we took sick days/inset days off equally and so the kids were equally used to either parent being around as caregiver.

Do you honestly not have a single person in your support network who could help?

A lot of people, including me, don’t.

BUT OP you should have planned for this as it’s a very common situation. What about the day after tomorrow etc if DC still sick? You both need to talk about a plan.

Kellph83 · 29/09/2026 19:34

This is a tricky one! Is there a GP who can look after DD?
i see it from both sides. It will look bad on you if you don’t go in tomorrow, but your DH has a full day of appointments some of which patients have probably been waiting weeks for. All the people saying he should stay home, need to think if you’d feel the same if your GP appt got cancelled last minute.. my guess is you’d be cussing him and not happy at all

OP has a plan for after her initial training.

I’m afraid you do. Bad as it is for him, you really do…..
