And he just thought she was really beautiful?

L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci
Je Reviens by Worth
Madame Rochas by Rochas

Takes me back. I thought she was impossibly glamorous with her shoulder pads, stiletto sandals and fur jacket (a sign of the times indeed).

Opium.

always. She and my dad were Civic types and had a lot of formals and she always wore opium.

I was just going to say this! Opium perfume, a long black white and brown dress from Wallis (that was v posh for us as she was a nursing student and we had v little money), and her bob that was curled and tonged….and I used to think she looked beautiful and elegant. This was in about 1986. Also her little black shoes with a heel.

She never went out. To this day, she thinks that women only need friends so they have company going to places where they can bag a man to marry. Once they’ve bagged one, no need for friends. And, obviously, once the chap in question has bagged you, he doesn’t have any need to take you out any more, either. 😥🙄

This is exactly what my mum did, they had couple friends when they was younger- no one now. But she never had actual friends.

My Mum always wore Fiji back in the 70's ive never seen it since. I wore Anais Anais in the 80's. DS bought me some for Christmas as he said it reminded him if happy times when it was just him and I after I left his abusive father.

Mine wore opium too and a leather coat. I can’t remember what it looked like but I can remember the way the two smells mingled together

My mother always wore skirts. There's a photo of us on holiday in 1966 and she's wearing a white blouse, cardigan and tartan skirt. She's 37 and looks about 20 years older.
She only wore trousers later in life (wasn't allowed to wear trousers at work). She was dressed better in her 70s than her 30s.

Always short, permed hair with a weekly shampoo and set.

Fidji is sold online at Just My Look. It's where I bought mine.

Also Yardley April Violets

fedupandtired1 · 27/09/2026 13:05

Lulu she had to stop wearing it as it gave me migraines . Then she wore opium or anais anais

endofthecorridoor · 27/09/2026 13:05

A rabbit fur coat and rive gauche perfume with silky blouses. I remember the feel of the coat so clearly. It’s still hanging in her wardrobe now

UserName001002 · 27/09/2026 13:07

Eau de sīlage

Charalam · 27/09/2026 13:26

Rive Gauche or Ysatis.

My Mum always wore Rive Gauche I can smell it now, still have fond memories of reading to her whilst she got ready.
bBy today’s perfume standards, just thinking it’s a great & unique fragrance and my goodness has staying power.
She also layered it which I guess helped.
She would also wear L’Eau D’Lancome in daytime and I would love to get a bottle for myself now.

Ah I had eau de Lancôme when I was about to give birth and that makes me think of my DC as a baby. I’d love a bottle now but can’t find it. Is it discontinued?

my mum also wore Paris and I can’t find that one anymore either?

I found Paris on eBay for you but it’s a teensy bottle! Still available in other places…

Here’s the Lancôme one, not sure if my memory is wrong but the bottle looks slightly different to what I remember.

Coty L’Aimant and extra strong mints

Livpool · 27/09/2026 14:26

Onacuctustree · 27/09/2026 01:11

Tweed.
I have no idea why.

That was my Nan’s favourite perfume

EvelynBeatrice · 27/09/2026 14:31

Youth Dew, Miss Dior, Chanel No 5. Always stylish. ❤️

Liquorandvinegar · 27/09/2026 14:33

SirChenjins it smells the same to me! I've only bought those that have the tweed pattern and Lentheric stated on the packaging. A search includes a Tweed in an orangey colour box - I'm not sure that's the same.

Actually, I get my own old favourite perfume on eBay too (Helena Rubinstein Heaven Sent).

ohdelay · 27/09/2026 14:35

Charlie. She also used to wear a short white (fake?) fur coat. Have strong memories of falling asleep at mass with my face in her coat.

That's good to know, thanks! I saw the one with the orangey box which made me think it may be a reimagined (aka smells nothing like the original) version.

thatsgotit · 27/09/2026 14:52

Charlie or Tweed. Yep, it was the 70s 😄

Disturbia81 · 27/09/2026 15:05

Opium. It was so strong. She always loved the heavy ones
I love the fruity sweet ones

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 27/09/2026 15:12

Rive Gauche when I was little, and later, Samsara. She rarely dressed up, but always looked very glamorous when she did.
She died 15 years ago, and I still keep her last bottle of Samsara at the bottom of a drawer - it still smells the same.
