Chanel No 5

MyGirlJ · 27/09/2026 00:57

When she was in her 30s (in the early 1990s), I remember her wearing a long black fitted dress, with inch-wide straps and thigh split. She always smelt of body shop japanese musk perdume oil, which got discontinued in the late 90s/early 00s. When she passed away in 2014, I bought a small bottle of Japanese musk for a small fortune from an Ebay seller. It's kept in a drawer, and i sometimes have a smell when I really miss her.

White Dirmonds by Estee Lauder. I have a cardigan and this perfume in a special box . I would love just one more hug from her while wearing this . She wasn't glamorous but wore expensive pretty conservative clothes .

Onacuctustree · 27/09/2026 01:11

Tweed.
I have no idea why.

Friendlygingercat · 27/09/2026 02:14

My grandmother wore Estre Lauder Youth Dew and Chanel no 5

Copperoliverbear · 27/09/2026 03:52

@shitshow1976I just looked on boots it’s £99. Might ask for it for Christmas. Perfume is so expensive.

TwentyDunhill · 27/09/2026 03:57

Tendre Poison or Georgio.
ALWAYS trousers,
Big oversized blazers and shirts
leather or denim jackets
doc Martin's and converse (and matching for me!)

Paloma Picasso. She used to have this black, velvety wool coat that she'd where out. She's never been a smoker, but I remember standing in the hallway sniffing her coat, remarking about the 'pretty pub smell' (perfume mixed with stalemate booze and cigarette smoke).

Beesandhoney123 · 27/09/2026 04:09

Chanel no5 or este lauder youth dew. Even for gardening and dog walking! And the faint waft of silk cut.

Soft tweedy skirts, soft fitted twinsets, even with wellies. Slim, bobbed hair, not much make up. Pretty sandals/ flat shoez. Never owned a pair of trainers or coat that didnt have a belt or shape:)

My mum wears the same perfume my Granny wore, Youth Dew. Even when she was far too young to do so! I haven’t quite sprung for that (yet) but I have been on a mission to find a signature scent my children can remember me for, I think I’ve settled on Chanel Coco, while it’s not Youth Dew, I’ve clearly followed my female line in their love of old lady musky perfumes!

One of my boys was at uni thousands of miles from home and one day he phoned me crying and said, mum I could smell your perfume in Tesco and I went looking for you, but it wasn’t you and now I’m sitting in the car crying.

The perfume was Organza.

My mum always wore Chanel or Lancôme. She used to smell divine. My mum is a professional charity ball goer

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/09/2026 05:35

Femme by Rochas or Anais Anais.

My mum didn’t really dress up (not much money) but when she did it was a black chiffon clinging evening dress or a stunning red and white and black patterned evening maxi dress (70s chick). She did have a couple of designer pieces from her previous life in advertising, just classic evening outfits, dresses.

I once went with her to buy a midnight blue silk and sequinned evening dress from a concession in Harvey Nicks but her mum had given her money for this as it was for a special charity hotel event (ball).

MaureensPieNMash · 27/09/2026 06:44

She went out smelling of Samsara and came home smelling of cigarettes. I loved both smells- even though I have never been a smoker (1980s-90s)

Johnnyfartpants · 27/09/2026 07:36

L’Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake - still love that smell so much

Liquorandvinegar · 27/09/2026 07:47

Lentheric Tweed. I can still find it on eBay for her. She's coming up 92 now so it's not so much a going out perfume as a Sunday perfume!

Issey miyake (not sure how it’s spelt), lots of black velvet in the early 90s, black leather ankle boots, black leather gloves too.

Buscake · 27/09/2026 08:16

Poison

Dragonfly97 · 27/09/2026 09:42

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 26/09/2026 20:50

Blue grass. Fenjal bath. @MabelAnderson i also associate it with carsickness. She’d liberally spray it in the car. 🤢

but I’m disappointed to see all the fashionable perfumes of my youth listed as ‘mothers’’! Feel old now 🤣

Same here!! I still love Opium, but it's not the same as it was in the 90's when I wore it, also love Samsara.

notapropergrownupat49 · 27/09/2026 10:18

Chanel no 5 and yardley lipstick

hardshoulderr · 27/09/2026 11:42

Rive Gauche. I used to beg to be allowed a spray when she was putting some on for special occasions.

When I saw this I immediately thought of my step mother (who I adored) who wore rive gauche.
I thought she was so beautiful and glamorous!

Anais anais, oil of ulay elnett hairspray and wine.

I am slightly concerned some of the posters seem to be referring to their mums who are my age and I am now part of history.

I was talking about a time when my mum was 10+ years younger than I am now!

Mammyloveswine · 27/09/2026 12:18

youth dew by Estée Lauder perfume!

maras2 · 27/09/2026 12:21

Je Reviens by Worth.
Cigarettes by Sobranie black russian.
De rigueur in 1950's.

Does it still smell the same as it did back in the day? I saw it on Amazon and was tempted to buy some, but instead bought a cheapy body spray which does get good reviews from people who say it smells like the original.
