Seriously..wtaf were we thinking?

Omg yes, I remember the craze for wearing bodies, too! Yes, the poppers were a total pain.

The one good thing about ski pants was that the stirrup kept the legs nice and straight if wearing boots, instead of riding up/being wrinkled!

CrazyMidget · 02/10/2026 01:44

Oh, those were the days! Clothes from Dash or, if you were flush, Benetton. Everything pastel-coloured. (See concoction from Dash below.) Feathered hair. White Musk or Dewberry from the Body Shop. Ra ra skirts, ski pants, and bodies. The men from Dynasty on the TV, especially Jeff Colby and Dex Dexter. And Priscilla Presley looking beautiful and normal, before fillers. You couldn't go wrong. 🤣

These days, the flat centre-parted hair is all the rage, like Ali McGraw's in Love Story.

I wonder if eighties hair will come back? I hope so - I love it!

Priscilla Presley as Jenna Wade in Dallas, pre-fillers. I don't get the whole filler thing. Sure, you may not have as many wrinkles, but you look swollen! The dental hygienist where I go used to have the cutest little face. Small and with really delicate bone structure and high cheekbones, She then got fillers, and no joke, her face looked twice the size AND all her lovely bone structure was obscured. If I had nice bone structure, I think I'd rather keep it and have wrinkles. They look better than pillow-face and they really aren't the end of the world.

My DD went with the school a few years ago. They had a lesson in a Victorian classroom and when she got home she asked if it was like that when I was at school!😄

To be fair we still had desks with inkwells in my primary and secondary schools! Some of the classrooms had the more modern flat tables but they hadn't replaced them in all the rooms :)

No slates though, we had progressed beyond those.

We did too although we didnt actully use the inkwells.

DozyCrow · 02/10/2026 12:58

Havent RTFT so sorry if I'm duplicating anyone else. I have two....

  1. When I was giving a presentation ration to new joiners at work. We have to begin by introducing ourselves and saying when we joined the company. Once when I did this, a grad at the front said "I wasn't even born then".
  2. When I'm completing something online and have to scroll down forever to find my year of birth.

I remember him coming out as gay. (Which I don't care about) I remember some class mates being disappointed

If you were chosen to be ink monitor, it was a great honour!

We genuinely had abacuses when I started all girl grammar in 1973 plus Latin lessons and you had to use fountain pens and wear a beret !! Definitely a touch of ms jean Brodie going on !!

Bjorkdidit · 03/10/2026 03:34

We had outside toilets and Izal paper at my primary school. Thankfully that's the sort of thing that only exists in museums depicting 'how awful it was to be working class 100+ years ago' museum exhibits these days.

When I went to secondary school, there were still some desks with ink wells but they were slowly being replaced. They were a source of fascination and lots of people hoped you were allocated to a classroom where you got a 'lift up desk' because as well as the ink wells they also had a space under the desktop lid, accessed by a hinged flap although apart from the sheer novelty I can't think why people wanted them.

We have sort of gone full circle with children using tablets at school, sort of a digital slate.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/10/2026 05:05

Izal toilet paper, @Bjorkdidit - ohhh that brings back traumatic memories! It was completely non-absorbant and didn’t dry or clean you after either a wee or a poo. I avoided the loos at school if at all possible, because of this dreadful stuff.

Sandi Toksvig talked about it on QI - she used to use it as airmail paper, to write letters home!

We had to write in ink pen not biro and there were ink wells but I think I had a cartridge pen, at least you could have your own desk and books in one place

Txutxioyigx · 03/10/2026 08:25

We had desks with inkwells in the 80’s but no ink. My primary was built 1920’s and the toilet block was in the yard. We had izal toilet roll and big oil tanks for the heating. My infant class had an open fire, they used to light it in winter and we all fell asleep on the rug.

Being left handed, using a fountain pen and not smudging everything you've just written was a GenX flex 😂

Good as tracing paper, though!

I work at a university... It's bad enough realising that the students are young enough to be my children, but a few colleagues too.. (a scary thought when my own DC are only primary-age!).

Yet the weird paradox of them dressing eerily similarly to me in the 90s (and that a comparison would be people who were teenagers in the 60s thinking the same about me then!)

Yes 'if you wore it the first time round, you are too old now'... that really makes me fee old. Also, I doubt they even know that saying!

EmmaJane57 · 03/10/2026 19:14

Years ago actually. I mentioned Duran Duran, can't recall the context now but the 17 year old girl in the room looked at me blankly and said "Who?"

That girl is now in her thirties and I saw karma happen when she had a similar experience with a 15 year old.
