Ah ok. One thing I never learned. Although I do remember my grans landline number, despite it not being in use for about 20 years 🤣

At the third stroke, the time will be...

cariadlet · 27/09/2026 09:19

I used to love looking through family photos as a child - ones of me, my mum and dad and my sister but also my mum's (few) photos from her own childhood and her wedding photos.

Years after leaving home, I was round my mum and dad's house and got the photos out for the first time in a long time. It took me aback to see how young she looked in her wedding photos - younger than I was at the time.

That was definitely a "God, I'm old" moment.

Is a big hairy man whose 20 at xmas!

I know how you feel - instead of sitting in his high chair banging his spoon, I’m setting him up limited companies - where did those years go -

As a fellow foodie, I feel your pain. I hate those high tables with stools. So much so that it has put me off a couple of very good restaurants that only have them as an option.

Im late 50s and hadn’t really thought of myself as particularly old until recently. I have a knee issue at the moment so have to use a stick on occasions. I go to my parents one night a week after work and take a shopping trolley to get them any shopping they need as it can be too heavy to carry. I was walking toward my office door and caught the reflection in the glass door of an old woman with a trolley and a walking stick! That’s when I wondered when I had got old!

We got seated somewhere like this in an achingly fashionable and very packed pizza and pasta joint in Amsterdam even though we had booked- last time I will just smile sweetly and grit it - next time we will just go elsewhere, booking or not - I just ended up with chronic back ache for several days

I’d do exactly the same. I’d tell them that seating is not acceptable and go elsewhere. It’s the forced proximity to other diners too. I’m not out for dinner with 10 other people.

Constantrunner · 27/09/2026 12:44

Yes the high stools or even just plain backless benches are fine if you are 20, but not comfortable if you are older.

I miss old fashioned restaurants with proper comfy chairs, tablecloths and soft furnishings that absorb noise.

I had a moment yesterday chatting to my DD about the HRT her GP is putting her on next week, and how she can’t eat grapefruit because of her BP medication. I thought, this can’t be, surely I only finished going through my own menopause last year……

EveryoneUsingOutro · 27/09/2026 19:34

I think I’ve just had another moment. Watching the launch show of Strictly (yes I’m behind don’t shoot me) and the new Canadian pro Mark looked about 17 in the opening sequence. He doesn’t look old enough to have an adult passport to get here 😂

A friend sent me a meme saying that Dirty Dancing came out in 1987 and was set in 1963.

If it was made today it would be set in 2002.

I’m still speaking to her… but only just. 😆

Oh god there's no need for that!!! 🙈

Cheers Drinking GIF

It was my birthday recently. I realised I'm now the same age that Marty Mcfly's parents were in 1985. I always thought they were so old! Also, if Back to the Future was set today, Marty would be going back to 1996!

I'm not able for these ones 🙈😂

Scorchio84 · 28/09/2026 05:20

Recently at the school gates another mum (a lot younger than me) made some complaint about it always raining on her, I said "That's because you lied when you were seventeen" and she just looked at me, puzzled...

Love this @SukiPook 😂

My class asking, 'What are we doing today?'

"Same thing we do every day Pinky..........."

Even the TA had the same response.....

#tumbleweed#

Edited

I've said this in class too a few times! In my defence I teach in primary school but it's a total reflex 😂

I get the same response when my younger colleagues watch me drive to clients all over the country without using a sat nav. Then I tell them that when I was their age and starting out, we had a big box of A to Zs at work and you'd set off with directions from the client file and the A to Z. Or sometimes you'd not even have directions because no-one had been there before. Of course, Google maps and sat navs did not exist.

So you'd have a sheet that told you to go along Motorway A to junction B, then take the A road to town Y and when you pass the big Asda it's down the third street on the left. Sometimes you might get lost and then you'd have to go into a shop or accost a passer by to ask them to help you find out where you needed to go. Or find a payphone to call the client you were meeting for help. <wonders if the average 20 something remembers payphones>.

When we were going on holiday by car my dad would send off to the AA who would send (by post) a set of instructions for the route. I remember doing this online before the days of sat navs or google maps.

Just last week a friend and I were driving home late at night and the A road we needed was closed but none of the sat nav apps knew about it. We had to keep finding villages/towns on her phone screen and heading to them as otherwise the satnav just kept trying to direct us back onto the A road. It took us nearly 4 hours to get home (should be 1.5).
I have now ordered a UK road map to keep in the car….just in case! 🗺️

I buy a cheap map book and replace it every 2 or three years to keep up with changes. You can also often trick GPS by removing eg "motorways and A roads" from your preferences.

I was putting a few bags of cement onto a trolley in B&Q. After the first ten bags I had to stop and catch my breath. I commented to someone that the bags feel lot heavier than they were 60 years ago. The problem is that 60 years ago I was lifting 50kg, or 1cwt, bags of cement without any difficulty, now the 25kg bags feel heavy after the first half dozen.
