What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

Amazingly, there are still adults around who do believe it's literal - talking snakes and all.

US Evangelicals. Isn't it frightening that the US might well get a President one day who believes all that bollocks, thinks the Earth's only 6,000 years old, and doesn't believe in evolution? Somebody like that could have the hand on the Nuclear button...😧

BlondeFool · 21/09/2026 11:47

I thought Las Vegas was only casinos and bars and I was shocked to learn it had an infrastructure and schools etc.

Is he from the north west of England ,? I live in Bolton and
I have heard osscpicle ( hospital) Boccle ( Bottle ,Sangals ( Sandals )

If I heard anyone over the age of 2 saying those words it would give me the total ick and I'd end up avoiding them 😁

Yes, I worked in pharma development for a while and the standard test method involves dissolving the tablet in a standard amount of fluid (some mimicking acid and water). It might be 125ml water etc. in any clinical trials the consume had to drink a set amount too.

I just remember thinking me dry swallowing some ibuprofen might not be the most affective

I told one of my friends that dry swallowing is dangerous after I saw her do it one time.. She completely dismissed the notion. Until the day she was lying on the floor trying to give herself the Heimlich maneuver as she lives alone.

Not remotely frightening, given the cunt who is currently in residence!

Of course it’s hard to read sarcasm on the internet, hopefully it was that!

Aye, it's a living, breathing city. It's not just an adult Disney World..

He's not an Evangelical. He just had to court them...

Since the 70s I thought a package holiday meant you take suitcases etc. I only found out the other week it doesn’t mean that. I’m 64

Is that not to ensure potential variations are reduced?

The research wouldnt work if person A gulps down 600ml water, but person B only has 50ml.

Very low brow but only this weekend discovered that a UV light supper charges any glow in the dark item. It is plainly obvious now that the glow item absorbs UV.

Years of tuning lamps upside down to get stuff to glow better for the children and myself as a child solved with a £6 USB UV light.

Still can’t quite believe it 😳

I have no idea what you mean by this 🤔

I was an adult when I found out narwhals are real and not a mythical creature in the same category as fairies, mermaids and unicorns 😂

Definitely not alone on this one, I have a narwhal in my main logo and a jackalope in one of my art pieces and it is delightful how many people assume the narwhal is mythical and the jackalope is real :)

I was an adult when I found out silicon valley was related to tech, for years I thought it was related to plastic surgery Blush

Your childhood notion was splendidly appropriate though!

Theunamedcat · 21/09/2026 12:10

Im sure someone has already mentioned it but i was in my thirties before I found out pineapples grow on bushes not trees thinking closer about it of course they do they are heavy! But then bananas are heavy too so I think my brain just put the two together and decided pineapples and bananas grow the same way 😂

I was in my 40s before I found out cats had tonsils like we do

Actually maybe people can tell me - why do they tip their head back to swallow tablets? They don't do it with anything else they swallow.

I remember seeing a lecture by someone on, amongst other things, how swallowing works and he demonstrated the fact that gravity has nothing to do with it by standing on his head and drinking water.

Im not sure why I tip my head back. I do have 10+ tablets to take, I usually take them all at once (apart from the ones that look like suppositories 😳😂) so I'm keen for none of the bastards to start dissolving in my mouth.
My kids take the piss though 😂

I never knew until fairly recently that rainbows are circles and not arcs.

We need an 😮 emoji.

Mind also blown.

I've posted this before but I thought the channel tunnel was under the sea not under the sea bed.

I thought that too, and used to wonder how they would stop the water getting into the trains, and would they have to inspect it regularly to make sure there were no leaks.

When they were about to start building it, they showed a clip of the massive boring machine they used to dig it out, and it was only then that I realised it was under the sea bed.

I heard someone teaching their child to say sammich instead of sandwich literally holding it out saying SAM MICH SAMMICH like why set your child up like that? They could say it correctly too they asked the other adult to pass the sandwiches

This might be a me thing though i never wanted or expected to have children so when I decided to keep my accident baby I raised her to be an adult I assumed she knew how to be a child naturally I just needed to help her grow up so she was not taught quack quacks and moos she was taught ducks and cows

Sounds like you have perfectly normal kids 👏

Oh, melons! I saw fields of them in Portugal at around 35 years old and was transfixed. I knew they were vine fruit but - if I bothered to think about it at all - expected them to be growing on hefty trellises, not along the ground.

Also peanuts having the nerve to grow underground. Despite knowing they're also called ground nuts, I feel they ought to grow at least on bushes!

GarlicSomething · 21/09/2026 08:51

I'm enchanted by this! I didn't know until five minutes ago - thanks. I don't feel a plonker about it, though, as I doubt it's widely known.

I knew when I was still in primary school, because my lovely, pedantic Uncle Brian drew me a diagram to demonstrate how you could never get to the end of the rainbow because there wasn't one!

He also tried to demonstrate why you could lean a motorbike over a long way without it falling over, using the salt and pepper pots and a folded napkin, but that still seems like magic to me.

I'm sure I would be a lot more knowledgeable if only he hadn't died when I was 13.

They are usually on ceilings and walls, hence pointing the light up to them.

Which would not be turning the lamps upside down, would it?

They are not my lamps but maybe that's exactly what she needed to do with the lamps in her house?
