What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

There’s a machine?

Yes but the word 'bypass' has a different meaning.

The bypass machine takes over from your heart and lungs, so the heart stops as it drains of blood.

As a person who was normally responsible for defining it was a really odd experience watching a couple of surgeons ignoring an arrythmia.

The bypass operation on your heart bypasses a blockage in a coronary artery by using a vein stitched into the coronary artery below the blockage.

Sometimes the vein is taken from your lower leg, this needs to be removed and attached above and below the blockage.

But you have a nice long vein just under you clavicle that can cut and be stitched below the blockage.

I used to think that men rested their penis on the front of the seat when they sat down to go for a number two! 😂

Those extra well endowed probably did, to prevent it dipping in the water!

If “Coldstream” is a place, then I raise you “Cold Christmas”: there’s a hamlet with that name, north of London. The Prime Meridian passes through it.

This is becoming too scatological, but doesn't everyone doing a number 2 also do a number 1 at the same time (or is it just me)?

thing47 · 29/09/2026 16:03

Great explanation from @sashh. DH has a 3cm scar on the inside of his left leg just below the kneecap where a vein was taken.

With an off-pump (otherwise known as a 'beating heart') bypass, they don't stop the heart, they slow it down and then operate on it while it is still doing its thing. This is the bit that rather blew my mind 😃

Just googled it (maybe I should have done this on someone else's computer). Apparently it's possible not to with a bit of practice but most people wee when they poo.

Gives a new perspective on the man putting his penis on the toilet seat.

It probably was at one point and someone just moved it.

Otherwise there wouldn't be so many of us who once thought it was a town in Wales! 😁

It’s weirder - that part of Northern England used to be a (pre)Welsh-speaking Kingdom calmed Elmet! So it was ‘Wales’, kinda… 🤣

Banjas · 29/09/2026 17:48

There is a townland in Dublin called Coldwinters.

Well I was trying not to be too pedantic. So while we’re on it, Tipperary, an actual place, both town and country in Ireland was historically divided into North and South.

I found out from my recently adult children doing driving lessons that cars have an internal arrow to show which side the petrol tank is on, very helpful when driving a hired car. It can be an arrow or the nozzle itself near to the petrol pump gauge.

Yeah we still have car regs with "TN" & "TS"

DeanElderberry · 29/09/2026 20:49

Not any more we don't. Tipperary has been a single county since 2010, and the TN and TS plates stopped being used in 2013..

No, relax, the little piggy really did go to the market to shop. I remember the Ladybird book illustration, she had a basket with her.

I still have some of my Ladybird books from growing up.. the illustrations were/are beautiful.. I get the odd couple now on Ebay too

Wow that's so cool 😎

I got a new one! This very minute, courtesy of a Sainsbury's commercial + Wikipedia. Burrata's an Italian cheese! I thought it was a ... well, I thought it was a burrito. I was 100% sure my lookup would confirm that Sainsbury's are stupid and the woman's salad plate should've been wrapped in a flatbread.

No, I had never noticed the two words aren't the same - while simultaneously knowing they aren't 😳

These all sound like they should be part of a word puzzle 😁

In DH's small home town in Ireland, there's a pub called the Canal Turn.

I won't bother explaining the rest 😆

They all go in that pub to watch the Grand National on the telly?😂😂

booksnbaking · 30/09/2026 13:18

The exterior facade of the (C)anal Turn is all that need concern us 😁
(IIRC they gave up and just painted the name on)

And for everyone that thought Billericay was in Ireland/sounds Irish ffs, you weirdos, HOW have you never come across :

"Good evening, I'm from Essex
In case you couldn't tell,
My given name is Dickie,
I come from Billericay,
and I'm doing very well..."

Absolutely @booksnbaking

I hadn't revisited the thread for a week or two until this afternoon, and then I started to read about Billericay and people thinking it was in Ireland, whereas I now have Billericay Dickie on the brain.

Oh yes, and green is the unripe colour of all bell peppers. Different varieties will ripen into red, yellow, orange and other colours including, rather oddly, mauve.

I'm in my 70s and I only learnt that last month!
I've brushed my teeth twice a day since a tiny child but I was never even shown how to use the toothbrush correctly. So my dental hygiene routine has been a learning curve all my life. The not rinsing came to light after the new hygienist I saw last month advised me to get a water flosser. When I bought it I was confused about where it fitted in to the tooth brushing, interdental brushes and mouth wash procedures. Google A1 provided me with a tooth cleaning regime which included the information about not rinsing after brushing and mouth wash should be used to freshen the mouth at mid day or similar tims in-between brushing. I'm still reeling from the shock.
Also fed up that tooth cleaning, boring at the best of times , is also now more complicated. On the plus side I've got all my own teeth and they are in decent nick.

As your teeth are clearly doing fine, does a tiny bit of you think - ha! All these silly new developments. I've been doing it right all along!

I think that's how I'd feel if I were you. Or would I be a bit stupid to see it that way ?

I don't think you are being stupid at all.
Having had chance to think about the new information I have taken on board some of it but I have gone back to rinsing my mouth with mouthwash after brushing because that's what feels better for me. It seems to have worked out ok for me so far.

During the course of my life amongst the various dentists i have seen I've had 2 along the way who have been really good and who I have respected One in particular, a woman actually, gave really helpful advice - it was her who introduced me to the electric tooth brush and told me the best way to use it.I still value what she told me. Whereas some of this new information I have been given does leave me feeling rather sceptical. And just a bit annoyed if the truth be told!

Love that song! I'm Irish and whenever I hear or see the name Billericay that's all I can hear. And I've been hearing it a lot while reading this thread!
