What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

But cows tongues are huge! I wonder what animal the tongues came from. Tiny lambs maybe? 🙁

I don't honestly remember, I was too grossed out to even think about it!! thinking about it now, logically, maybe they were just thick slices of tongue??

or, as you say, the tongue from a much smaller animal, I don't know what? The first time the twins must've been about.15 months old, the tongues were huge, but nothing like an actual cows full size tongue...

We lost touch many years ago, so I can't even ask her, or her children.

I wonder how big a lamb's tongue is? I lived in New Zealand at the time so lamb would seem like a reasonable thing for it to have been.??

My colleague thought we produced new eggs every month. She’s 47 with 2 daughters

Unless you actually took notice of this at school; it’s perfectly reasonable not to know.

I don’t find the workings of a woman’s body all that interesting to be honest. The minute I started my periods I started looking forward to menopause. I was never going to have kids so it didn’t matter how it all worked.

Thank God that was something my mum never served!!

However, your post reminded me... when I was 13/14 I used to go to a ladies house several nights a week to help her look after her twin toddlers & get things done around the house.

One afternoon, she sent them both in their high chairs and gave each of them a tongue.
It was the absolute grossest thing to watch two toddlers sucking licking chewing tongues.

I offered to clean the bathroom and do the ironing while she's supervised them!!

From then on when they had tongue, for a snack, she would give me the option before giving them to them!!

🤢🤮

That is another level of mental. Gnaw on a tongue 🪅
But as another poster said, I just thought slices of tongue was just a funny kind of ham as well 🤣.
A little bit of what u don't know, and all that.
Throwing a kid a whole tongue tho, to work away on, that is 🤯🙈🤮

That you don’t kick a ball with your toe, I mist have been 37/38, can you tell girls didn’t play football when I was at school???

I found out that you don't put your thumb inside your fist when you want to engage in the noble art of pugilism. Or punch somebody.

She was early twenties, French, from Nantes, in about 2008. Apparently there's some German/Eastern European, "Things your granny tells you" about eating your crusts making you clever. Maybe there's something similar going on in Nantes about it being better for you than the rest of the loaf.

She was always coming out with strange things though. She once told me that she'd had a perm years ago and since then her hair had learned to be naturally curly and she hadn't needed one again.

To sort of continue the hair curling theme.

Likewise, somebody rumbled her, "Homemade Christmas Yule Log" fib by asking her why she had it on the back seat of her car in a bakery box when she picked him up to go to her flat for the Christmas Eve party she invited us all to.

She was completely unfazed. "It was to help the chocolate ganache to set in the cool air." she said. This man was our chef at the restaurant we all worked at.

Good times.

Edited

🤣🤣🤣

she sounds like a right character!!

Yeah, it was all of those emojis!! especially for a very young teen who wanted to be a vegetarian (but parents wouldn't let me) & I went vegetarian as soon as I moved out of home. So it was added.🤢🤮

A huge number of women and girls do. Don’t shame people for that, you’re being awful. Just make sure any girls in your life know how it all actually works.

She is not being awful.
It is hugely worrying that there are adults who do not know this most basicc biological fact.

Actually maybe people can tell me - why do they tip their head back to swallow tablets? They don't do it with anything else they swallow.

I remember seeing a lecture by someone on, amongst other things, how swallowing works and he demonstrated the fact that gravity has nothing to do with it by standing on his head and drinking water.

It opens the airways & gullet.

Back to the bladder/vagina thing. I'm sure that some time ago (years, rather than weeks) we had the same discussion, and a couple of posters asserted that actually they had the medical condition of the urethra discharging into the vagina. Very very rare, they said, but true in their case. Does anyone else remember?

No, but it's a definite thing. Equivalent of hypospadias in boys. Doesn't do any harm but can make infections more likely - and confuse medics!

That when you call a lorry an artic it’s short for articulated it doesn’t mean it drives to North/ South Pole or Greenland to deliver goods 😄

I'm an educated professional and it wasn't until my children were adults (and one told me) that I learnt narwhals weren't a mythical creature. In my defence, unicorns are...

I was in my 40s before I knew narwhals were real, and like you, my children told me they were real. In fairness, I hadn't even heard of them til my late 30s!

She was shaming that poster. It is awful to shame someone for a lack of education, one which a huge number of women have. You want to fix it? Then have these conversations openly with girls when they are young. Don’t shame adults who were not afforded that education.

SabreIsMyFave · 21/09/2026 20:33

Oooooh, I've got another one. I thought (and so did my DH and DC) up to about 15 years ago, that Buffalo Wings were made from actual buffalo, (like beef.)

Didn't know they were just chicken, and the Buffalo Wings recipe originated in Buffalo New York, State.

My granny once presented us with a whole cow’s tongue on a platter. With mashed potatoes. It was delicious as long as I didn’t look at it or think about it too much.

I didn’t know until a couple of years ago you could adjust seatbelts on cars. In my defence I learned to drive decades ago when they were set at fixed points so hadn’t ever noticed that newer cars had more sophisticated technology. I was chuntering to DH about being strangled by a seatbelt and why do all car manufacturers think we’re six foot tall? And he said well why don’t you move the thingy lower down…

I did not know this !I'm always being strangled by seat belt And thought it would probably decapitate me if I was in a crash.

twothingscanbetrue · 21/09/2026 20:59

@FlorenceBlack @fivepastmidnight @Aposterhasnoname I think it very much depends on your vehicle. My dad's car had adjustable seatbelts 20 years ago. My current car does not!

Read Invisible Women for more fun facts like decapitating seatbelts 😭

I was nearly 30 when I had a hangover and someone handed me a berrocca. I was in Australia. Never heard of them really. But I took it and put it straight in my mouth....I walked off rather quickly and headed for the bathroom 😄😄. Bloody thing was fizzing up... could have been dangerous if I'd swallowed any I suppose. Hilarious.

But she didn’t dissolve it. She at the thing and would have had it fizzing all the way down and fizzing in her stomach 😆

I'm fascinated by East Germany, love spy novels set in the early 80 's.. and the Georgaphy of East and West Berlin and the Berlin wall completely defeats me.

I've been a few times, it's fascinating. Any recommendations on novels?

I was an adult when I found out narwhals are real and not a mythical creature in the same category as fairies, mermaids and unicorns 😂

I found this out in my late 40’s when watching the Octonauts with my mindees.
