What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

DH and I were discussing him having a vasectomy the other day, he said he didn't want to have his balls cut off so wouldn't do it.
Sir you have degree in bio science?!! You're thinking of castration.
He was fully convinced that a vasectomy meant fully removing his balls.

No, relax, the little piggy really did go to the market to shop. I remember the Ladybird book illustration, she had a basket with her.

Exactly!!

and the other people are just lying or being meanies!!

I will not accept their nonsense!

“Fits as snugly as a nun’s…. What!

"Then owls and bats / Cowls and twats / Monks and nuns, in a cloister's moods / Adjoin to the oak-stump pantry!" - Pippa Passes, 1841.

He was very embarrassed. Had misunderstood a line in a satirical poem of the 1660s: "They talk'd of his having a Cardinal's hat / They'd send him as soon an old nun's twat".

The seventeenth century was a lot more comfortable with vulgarity than the nineteenth, generally.

I was well into my 30s, maybe, before I realised West Berlin was surrounded by East Germany. How emasculating for the DDR to have half of one of your major city belonging to another country.

I'm fascinated by East Germany, love spy novels set in the early 80 's.. and the Georgaphy of East and West Berlin and the Berlin wall completely defeats me.

My dads vasectomy went wrong he actually did lose one of his balls to an infection (back in the 80s)

I was in my early 20s when I bought my first flat. There was no hot water and I actually rang Thames Water to complain that they weren't sending hot water through the taps. The lady I spoke to was so polite and lovely and helpfully explained that I would need to get someone to come and look at my boiler. Mortified.

Also in my early 20s when I found out/was told that maggots grow from fly eggs. We were watching an old film and a doctor was horrified that a man's leg wound had maggots in it. I said but how did they get in, surely he would have noticed and my faintly horrified husband explained about flies and larvae etc. The awful thing is I then remembered learning that at school but I just hadn't put two and two together.

Believe it or not, I'm actually quite clever but common sense took me a long time to develop.

Ah bless you x
I work with young adults in quite an elite establishment. You can be extremely clever with a First Degree but not have street smarts!

I only found this out just now, from you 🤣 now I'm not sure what's going on with ox tail soup, it's just cow tail soup?

That was exactly what I thought!!!

I'm vegetarian, but my dad used to eat oxtail soup and a friend of mine still does....

It sounds gross to me, irerespective of which animal it's from, but I expect somebody will be a long to say it's from a sheep or something mad?!

I don’t know - I just know it freaked me out and I wondered how it could be! Really hope someone comes along with knowledge about them

In the case of the Black Sea undersea river, it’s down to water from different sources with different salt levels (and densities) meeting and the denser water dropping below the less dense water.
This Wikipedia article might help explain it better:

I once worked with a girl who thought bread crusts were nutritionally superior to the crumb. More worryingly, this was in a restaurant and she'd previously worked in a bakery.

How old was she?

I'm 57, born in 1969 & that's what we were told as children. That and they make your hair curl! 🤣🤣

I have no idea what age I knew that was crap, but young enough never to have really given it any thought if you know what I mean.

To be fair, there are several actual real-life animals that you would assume would be far more likely to be fantastical and imaginary than just a horse with a horn on its head!

The word 'unicorn' was actually used for a real-life animal in the King James Bible - which might have confused some in modern times - but it was referring to the rhinoceros, which as the word etymologically suggests, does indeed have one horn and so can quite legitimately be called a 'unicorn'.

There were several animals that might have been the “unicorns” from the King James Bible (I have a family KJBible with unicorns in).
Most likely is the Auroch or Re’em which was a kind of cow with long slender horns. When viewed from the side the horns often aligned, giving the appearance of one horn coming out of the forehead.

This was a horrific day for me as a child. I'd always thought tongue was a funny sort of ham, never wondered why it was called that. A relative explained it to me, despite my dm signalling to them frantically to shut up. I never ate it again.

I always knew that it was a literal tongue as the local farmer sold her beef in the corner shop she owned in the village. She gave my mother the tongue free and my mother would stuff it into a small pan and cook it. As we would say in Scotland- it gave me the boak!

I’m on mirtazapine I made the mistake once of taking a tablet before I had got a drink of water. By the time I got downstairs to get a drink of water at least half the tablet had dissolved. I didn’t sleep much that night. They help with sleep as well as being antidepressants. Never did that again and never had such a bad nights sleep since.

Erm, are you on the orodispersible ones? Mine say in the instructions to allow the tablet to dissolve in your mouth!

Don't know how much difference it makes, mind you.

When you realise that the slices of tongue you got in a salad in the 70s & 80s were in fact slices of tongue 🤨
Ignorance is bliss as they say

Thank God that was something my mum never served!!

However, your post reminded me... when I was 13/14 I used to go to a ladies house several nights a week to help her look after her twin toddlers & get things done around the house.

One afternoon, she sent them both in their high chairs and gave each of them a tongue.
It was the absolute grossest thing to watch two toddlers sucking licking chewing tongues.

I offered to clean the bathroom and do the ironing while she's supervised them!!

From then on when they had tongue, for a snack, she would give me the option before giving them to them!!

🤢🤮

Robert Browning thought it meant a nun's headgear (wimple?) and put it in a poem. Nobody dared tell him.

Ahahahah! Just looked this up, it's true! Cheers 😂

On the subject of tablets - if you're taking pills, it works as expected to tip your head back to swallow. But if you're taking capsules, tip your head forwards instead - they float!

God ,please don’t tip your head back to swallow tablets , they are far more likely to go down the wrong way! It’s one of the things that people always seem to do in TW dramas ( along with using a stick in the wrong hand) and I’m always like noooooooo.

But cows tongues are huge! I wonder what animal the tongues came from. Tiny lambs maybe? 🙁

I have no idea what age I knew that was crap, but young enough never to have really given it any thought if you know what I mean.

She was early twenties, French, from Nantes, in about 2008. Apparently there's some German/Eastern European, "Things your granny tells you" about eating your crusts making you clever. Maybe there's something similar going on in Nantes about it being better for you than the rest of the loaf.

She was always coming out with strange things though. She once told me that she'd had a perm years ago and since then her hair had learned to be naturally curly and she hadn't needed one again.

To sort of continue the hair curling theme.

Likewise, somebody rumbled her, "Homemade Christmas Yule Log" fib by asking her why she had it on the back seat of her car in a bakery box when she picked him up to go to her flat for the Christmas Eve party she invited us all to.

She was completely unfazed. "It was to help the chocolate ganache to set in the cool air." she said. This man was our chef at the restaurant we all worked at.

Good times.

My boyfriend recently found out that gherkins are just small cucumbers. He is 40

Youd be surprised at how many think they are two different vegetables. I only discovered it when my eldest went through a phase of wanting them but not pickled so I googled where to buy unpickled gherkins 🫣

Also me as a reasonably educated adult..... despite knowing you can lactate in and after pregnancy that dairy cows are in a continued cycle of pregnancy/post birth. I have no idea why I thought it was the gtass.....prob that stupid butter advert from decades ago.

Isn't it possible that at one time the bread was brushed with diluted egg to produce a lovely brown crust? That would certainly provide superior nutrition....

Your fallopian tubes aren't connected to your ovaries and they just sort of use little finger like structures to waft / beacon the eggs in. What?!!

Slightly more embarrassing, birds don't sleep in nests. They just hatch eggs there and sleep on branches / in foliage or what have you.

Edited

Parent birds (usually the female) will sleep in the nest only during the breeding season when there are unhatched eggs or young chicks that need continuous warmth and protection from the elements. Once the young birds grow feathers and leave (fledge), the family abandons the nest completely and never returns to sleep in it
So they do roost in the nest, but only whilst incubating eggs and whilst raising the chicks.

I didn’t know until a couple of years ago you could adjust seatbelts on cars. In my defence I learned to drive decades ago when they were set at fixed points so hadn’t ever noticed that newer cars had more sophisticated technology. I was chuntering to DH about being strangled by a seatbelt and why do all car manufacturers think we’re six foot tall? And he said well why don’t you move the thingy lower down…

Surely not! I need to check 😂
