What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

When you realise that the slices of tongue you got in a salad in the 70s & 80s were in fact slices of tongue 🤨
Ignorance is bliss as they say

Holland is a country. Brits call it Holland or The Netherlands. The Dutch call it Nederland.

Holland's a geographical region and former province of the Netherlands.

Holland is just one part of the Netherlands.

I don’t get this. I went to secondary in 1982. We were in our teens before we had biology classes. I knew about how babies came out before that though. My cousin is 10 years younger and I guess it was explained then as her mum had a c section.

Edited

Well yes, me too, but I was replying to the poster who said it's a good thing that we are more open about women's bodies these days, as if we weren't taught it in school

My husband dry swallows all tablets. I do not know how (or why 🤔) he does it, he has no problems, never chokes, they just go straight down 🤷‍♀️ Me on the other hand … whole different ball game, complete opposite! 😁

You should tell him that the injury you can cause if one gets stuck can be catastrophic. Burning a hole in your oesophagus will change his life, and not for the better. He really shouldn't risk it, all works OK,.. until it doesn't

I was an adult when I found out silicon valley was related to tech, for years I thought it was related to plastic surgery Blush

I have heard the expression used jokingly to describe a surgically enhanced cleavage to be fair!

I think what @Bargarran refers to is the findings of archaeological digs on Mount Ararat, Eastern Turkey, that match the given length, shape, etc of said ark. So while not conclusive, people do believe that it hit there.

The dairy industry promotes this myth so that people continue to drink milk, not realising how cruel it is.

Isn't it the opposite, though? Animal rights campaigners put out the message that cows have to keep on having calves continuously, with all of the calves being destroyed so that the milk that was meant for them is available for humans - when in reality, after having just one calf (which, granted, may well not have a very nice future ahead of it, especially if male), a cow can keep on giving milk indefinitely as long as she keeps being milked?

It's not being open about women's bodies. It's paying attention in biology class

I knew because my mum explained things when I was pretty young. But playground talk was quite confusing and it was definitely not covered in biology class in my school in the 70s & 80s.

Doubledenim305 · 21/09/2026 15:24

When I found out that all cows are female.

And more recently all chickens🤣

I think her point was "we were a very working class family with no real life experience of cruise ships".

I only found out recently that the swimming-pool smell isn't chlorine, it's chloramines that are released when the chlorine reacts with urine.

So how come it smells the same when you turn on a tap or shower in Egypt (where the water is heavily chlorinated to sterilize it)? (Other places too no doubt, but I've been to Egypt).

I did not know that you lean forward and hold your nose when you have a nose bleed, not backwards.

I have been cleaning my teeth using a method which has been out of date for 20 years, and rinsing my teeth.

I thought my local laundrette was called Dr Clean for many years before they finally redid the lettering.

That cous cous isn't a grain, it's a type of pasta.

So why do supermarkets always shelve it with the grains and pulses?!

That ‘segue’ is pronounced ‘seg-way’ - found this out last week!

As in the 80s band Sig-way Sig-way Sputnik Grin

I only found out fairly recently that when a woman squirts when aroused it's mainly diluted urine...😳

Didn’t they ever blow up, when the contents/steam expanded past the capacity of the tin’s seal? 😃 The only person I know in RL who did this (other than tragic or awful longtime bachelor characters in novels) was a friend of my father’s, now in his 80s, who prided himself on ‘not knowing anything about cooking’ and did it when his wife was in hospital.

The reason I remember it is ( it’s probably 30 years ago) that not only did he blow up a can of soup once, he also once, on another occasion when his wife was visiting her sister, put an unopened tinned steak and kidney pie in the oven, and blew the door off the oven.

Sorry, that must have been terrifying and - I hope - nobody was hurt... but the mental picture of the oven door being blown off is hilarious! Like something out of Wallace & Gromit!

I just had to look this up...

"Oxtail soup is made with oxtail, a cheap cut of beef. In English usage the term "ox" reflects the social divide in England after the Norman Conquest: beef (boeuf) referred to the superior cuts served to the Anglo-Norman ruling class; the less favoured parts of the animal were referred to with the Saxon prefix "ox". The soup has been adopted in French cuisine, and there are examples from several other parts of the world. Being made with tough meat, oxtail soup requires slow, gentle and long cooking."

So it sounds like no tails are even involved!

Oh right - so my grandad's story about the oxen wagging their tails in buckets of water was a complete fabrication then! (No wonder I didn't like the soup - used to wonder what else they might have wagged in it.)

Why did the chicken cross the road?
to get to the other side

I did not realise until someone pointed it out recently that other side = death.

What??!

Are you sure about that? I would have thought your stomach acids make much more difference than a few extra gulps of water.
Obviously with aspirin, if you chew it gets in the blood quicker. Which you should do (or make someone else do) if you suspect a heart attack and they're not allergic. I always have one in my pocket!

Just to say that chewing and swallowing aspirin is not the correct thing for a heart attack. You need 75mg soluble aspirin under the tongue. That way, it is absorbed by the blood vessels there very much more efficiently that anything via the stomach.

Why do they always put the jaffa cakes with the biscuits and not with the other cakes?!

Talking of which, I only found out relatively recently that, apparently, you're meant to eat jaffa cakes with the chocolate side down... it had never occurred to me not to eat it with the chocolate side on top!

Used to think that people having their eyebrows blown off when the gas oven explodes was acting seen in comic films, until my husband tried to light our ancient gas cooker, in a rental in Spain years ago. The bang brought forth many curious neighbours!
