What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

Just to say that chewing and swallowing aspirin is not the correct thing for a heart attack. You need 75mg soluble aspirin under the tongue. That way, it is absorbed by the blood vessels there very much more efficiently that anything via the stomach.

300mg . When i was having my 1st heart attack i was advised by the 999 operator to take 4 of the 75mg asiprin that i had in my bag. Without that extra 225mg i would have died.

I only found out a few days ago (I'm 56), that the Australian Outback isn't only comprised of red desert and tiny villages here and there. We are going next year, and we will be making a stop at Broken Hill, which has 17,000 residents, pubs, bars, restaurants, KFC, McDonalds etc. Not how I imagined the Outback to be like at all!

What was the laundrette called then?

Dry Cleaners - it was a combo dry cleaner / laundrette.

Amazingly, there are still adults around who do believe it's literal - talking snakes and all.

As someone who went to a convent junior school and then a catholic secondary school and sixth form no one ever said any of it wasn’t true. Perhaps they do these days.

no one told four year old me in the class that it was made up and I’m not sure at four you know independently what the word allegory or parable means.

what about miracles say the wedding feast at Cana/ Canan - can’t remember the spelling? Is that an allegory? Or is that believed to be true - I asssume Christ’s miracles are supposed to be believed.

I'm assuming it was Dry Clean.
(Am I right @Mouldemort ?)😊

Edited

It was Dry Cleaners. A lot of letters had fallen off!

I did think the kerning was a bit off.

I thought Daphne du Maurier was a man until last week.

Like Evelyn Waugh.

I knew because my mum explained things when I was pretty young. But playground talk was quite confusing and it was definitely not covered in biology class in my school in the 70s & 80s.

There’s also a big difference between how babies are conceived and born and general female plumbing

Thanks for that, @Reb642 , good to read, as I can't recall where I read it before.

I assumed it just said 'Dry Clean' but the 'y' had fallen off?!

There's a nightclub near me called, "Closer." The C fell off the sign, but nobody fixed it for years. It started to be known quite affectionately as "Loser's" or the, "The Loser Bar."

The sign is fixed now. Everybody still calls it "Loser's."

They were meant to be believed when we were much simpler, innocent people. Do you really think a Burning Bush spoke to Moses and the Red Sea parted?

Watering cans….. the knob bit at the front is to store the rain nozzle and not to use as a handle!!

I didn’t know until a couple of years ago you could adjust seatbelts on cars. In my defence I learned to drive decades ago when they were set at fixed points so hadn’t ever noticed that newer cars had more sophisticated technology. I was chuntering to DH about being strangled by a seatbelt and why do all car manufacturers think we’re six foot tall? And he said well why don’t you move the thingy lower down…

Not all cars have that.

Sorry I don’t quite understand this one - are you saying that was a euphemism?

oh bless, who's going to break it to her........

SabreIsMyFave · 21/09/2026 15:57

@Bargarran

Holland's a geographical region and former province of the Netherlands.

@Elsvieta

Holland is just one part of the Netherlands.

I wonder if @ERthree's mind is blown now? Grin (After being convinced Holland is actually a country when it's not.... like I was, until I discovered some 10 years ago, that it's not a country!)

@viques to be fair they have quite wee legs and rarely land unless breeding they shuffle about but can do damage fighting with their sharp claws.

That cous cous isn't a grain, it's a type of pasta.

So why do supermarkets always shelve it with the grains and pulses?!

Wait, what? Shock

Sorry, that must have been terrifying and - I hope - nobody was hurt... but the mental picture of the oven door being blown off is hilarious! Like something out of Wallace & Gromit!

I should remind myself that it's actually funny! I think I always find it irritating as anecdotes go, because it was told (and received by my father, who regarded this man as a Font of Knowledge on things about which he knew absolutely nothing) in such a spirit of 'But why would I know anything about cooking, and wasn't X very unreasonable not to leave me full instructions?' male chauvinist pig mode.

No, no one was hurt. No one else was in the house, other than the pie exploder himself, and he had gone to watch TV in another room, probably labouring under the delusion that the pie would magically get itself out of the oven when done, and fly itself toward him on a tray, with plate, cutlery etc.

But I think that as well as the oven door blowing off, the entire kitchen was spattered with gravy and pie filling and shards of metal from the tin!

When you realise that the slices of tongue you got in a salad in the 70s & 80s were in fact slices of tongue 🤨
Ignorance is bliss as they say

This was a horrific day for me as a child. I'd always thought tongue was a funny sort of ham, never wondered why it was called that. A relative explained it to me, despite my dm signalling to them frantically to shut up. I never ate it again.

When I found out that all cows are female.

And more recently all chickens🤣

I had to explain the cows = female to my extremely urban DH, too. Mind you, once when I called the police to let them know that there was a herd of bullocks loose on a rural road which was a popular rat run into the city rush hour,, hence likely to cause an accident, the responder said blankly 'What are bullocks?' To which I said 'Boy cows!'

Some animals, eg the platypus, do have one hole for everything. They're called monotremes and the hole is the cloaca.

I am aware of cloacas.

I am also aware that none of the Great Apes (including humans) possess one.

My Great Aunt thought it was all one hole. She would absolutely NOT be convinced otherwise, despite having three children herself. Odd woman she was.

SabreIsMyFave · 21/09/2026 16:18

Re cows all being female, and chickens too; I thought sheep were all female, and they're not. Some are male. I just thought sheep = female, and ram = male. End of. Found that wasn't true about 10 years ago! 🐑 There's loads of different sheep, and some are male!

Also shocked to discover cous cous is a pasta. I thought it was some kind of rice or grain! Never knew that before today Shock (From @PieLittlePony )

Theotheron · 21/09/2026 16:22

VenusThighTrap · 21/09/2026 10:53

Why did the chicken cross the road?
to get to the other side

I did not realise until someone pointed it out recently that other side = death.

I say it means the other side of a road.

Nothing to do with death.
