What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

That’s worrying ? You thought you bladder was plumbed into vagina?

And a baby grows in your bladder?

No, relax, the little piggy really did go to the market to shop. I remember the Ladybird book illustration, she had a basket with her.

Oh thank goodness for that 😂

That cows have to be pregnant in order to produce milk. No idea why it didn't occur to me before.

Not quite. They produce milk after the pregnancy!

It's not being open about women's bodies. It's paying attention in biology class

Ah well I clearly let myself down there. 🙄 I obviously didn’t pay attention - I was too busy being bollocked for being shit at drawing the diagrams.

HoppingPavlova · 21/09/2026 14:19

Not as an adult, but a teen in high school science/biology when I learnt how the digestive system worked. Until then I had been taught by mum that liquid went down one pipe and food down another and it was all processed separately until it came out the end separately. Amazingly, I went on to become a Dr🤣. Never corrected her either, she seemed so sure of it😆.

ETA - mum was definitely not up there with her medical knowledge in any other way, such as putting butter on burns, toothpaste on cuts and 101 other things that belong in a ‘wtf’ book. Upside was this prepared me for the many bizarre people that would cross my path in a medical capacity, nothing surprised me 🫤.

The dairy industry promotes this myth so that people continue to drink milk, not realising how cruel it is.

I used to work with someone who is now the executive Headteacher of a consortium of schools who told me that swifts ( birds not singers) don’t have legs because they spend their entire life flying. Except for when they are in their egg of course.

Waves to G*ry.

I once worked with a girl who thought bread crusts were nutritionally superior to the crumb. More worryingly, this was in a restaurant and she'd previously worked in a bakery.

She was right! According to my Granny eating your bread crusts makes your hair curl, so they must have something extra in them.

That Timbuktu is an actual place

i I thought it was a mythical place close to China until a few years ago

I was watching a travel program and they went there, nothing like how I had it pictured in my mind

I did not know that Austen Powers and Fat Bastard were both Mike Myers.

I didn’t know that The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Will Smith (the actor & singer) was the same person.
Never knew there were mountains under the sea - and still struggle to comprehend that.
I didnt know the one about the Channel Tunnel being under the sea bed, like others I thought it rested on the sea bed.

I appear to saunter through life totally unaware of some obvious facts!🙄

I was told by a nurse in a maternity ward that the reason women were given cod liver oil to drink in early labour was to grease the baby’s head to make delivery easier.

Strangely this helpful practice died out round about the time many maternity wards stopped routinely giving labouring mothers enemas.

Obviously not.

But I can’t say I have ever sat down and thought about the workings inside my body.

It wasn't too many years ago when I discovered rice Krispies were actually made from rice 😂. I just couldn't believe it. The person who had expanded my knowledge that day, just said 'well, what did you think they were made from?'. Hmmm

I thought as a kid that baked beans were baked like tiny cakes - they make the mixture, whatever it is, put little tiny blobs on a giant tray, and bake them.

“I just remember thinking me dry swallowing some ibuprofen might not be the most affective”

Sorry, but this really made me laugh 😆 You just used to choke down dry medication like an ostrich?! Didn’t it stick in a horrible lump in your throat? I’ve never in my life seen anyone do that!

I've seen it done on certain television shows it is never one tablet is they take a handful out of a bottle and swallow them with no water 🤣

Ahh, Timbuktu….

When I was very young, 6 or 7 maybe, we used to stay in a caravan in Aberystwyth. There was a hill to the one side, and I was always pestering about finding out what was on the other side.
To keep me quiet, my Ddad always said on the other side was “Timbuktu” which obviously I believed.

I was many, many years older when I found out where Timbuktu really was!

Gobsmacked. Utterly convinced it was in Aberystwyth.

That you dont rinse your mouth out after brushing your teeth

I have to rinse my mouth out after brushing my teeth otherwise I cough non stop.

The coughing is particularly bad at night if I don't rinse.

I'm 77 and my teeth are fine.

I heard that was a common misconception at the time.

It was. A young Marine on leave had the Police knocking on his Mums front door to tell him to report back to Plymouth as the Argentinians had invade the Falkland Islands, he asked why the fuck the wanted to invade Scotland.

I’m autistic, so there’s a lot of stuff I’ve realised as an adult I took literally as a child. For example, if someone said in a book that the dog or horse “went to live on a farm”, I really did think without question it went to live on a farm.

I think that's down to trusting what adults tell us. I was in my thirties when for some reason it suddenly dawned on me that our dog didn't really go and live on a farm when we were children. 😔

I grew up with a life long distrust of farms and farmers for enticing our dog away!

Squirrelsnut · 21/09/2026 07:06

My dad, an intelligent and well-read person, somehow got to adulthood thinking that it was 'chimley' not chimney.

Popped back onto an old username for this

My youngest was the one who would mispronounce things. Chimley was one of them.

I miss the little days! Although to be fair she got habanero and jalapeno mixed up yesterday and it reminded me of her preschool days.

My daughters both do this despite me going to get a glass of water for them. By the time I'm back they've dry swallowed it. Why???

I think I learnt the truth before becoming an adult.. but I remember spending a lot of my childhood in the car needing a pee and not understand why my parents wouldn't not stop at the 'to let' signs that seemed to be everywhere at the time!

well, that's odd...

because many private rentals are absolute toilets

and almost invariably involve a deposit

I don’t get this. I went to secondary in 1982. We were in our teens before we had biology classes. I knew about how babies came out before that though. My cousin is 10 years younger and I guess it was explained then as her mum had a c section.

I thought Las Vegas was only casinos and bars and I was shocked to learn it had an infrastructure and schools etc.

Yep, me too! Any one that’s ever been there only ever talks about the entertainment and hotels part of it. I just thought it was one long wide Road all lit up 24/7.
Im amazed there is far more too it!

I overheard my granny telling my older db that crusts would put hair on his chest so I resolutely (and very sensibly imo) refused to eat them.
