What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

Not to mention 'lickle' and 'skellington'..😂

It sounds so ignorant and uneducated, grates on me.

Thank goodness we are more open about female bodies now. Many girls didn't even know they had a vagina until their teens as late as the 80s. The whole area was usually called one thing and generally that was a nickname that was said quietly.

It's not being open about women's bodies. It's paying attention in biology class

Didn't think that far. The uterus was an enclosed organ in my mind.

Same here. I knew I had a vagina and a vulva but that was it.

I didn't know that an ox was essentially a job title for a cow. I always thought it was another word for a bull. Ox are usually (but not always) castrated male cattle who have been trained to pull things, but a female cow can also be an ox.

This one freaks me out! I had an ectopic and a tube removed and now I’m not even sure what’s happening anymore!

Apparently it doesn't have your chance of getting pregnant as the tube can reach over an snatch the egg from the other side.

I was surprised to learn that Hamelin (as in the Pied Piper) is a real place: Hameln in Germany. I have visited it, and there are lots of model rats, and frequent events where people dress as the Pied Piper. While the legend of the piper is not true, it might have been based on a historical event in which many children died.

Oh my goodness you’ve just traumatised me at almost 65 years old with the little piggy! I genuinely never understood the market situation! 😂 wow

Definitely not alone on this one, I have a narwhal in my main logo and a jackalope in one of my art pieces and it is delightful how many people assume the narwhal is mythical and the jackalope is real :)

I always thought that unicorns were real and lived in the Black Forest thanks to my dad. Funnily enough I thought seahorses were mythical.

Whatwillbewilbe · 21/09/2026 13:37

Oh I feel so stupid! I didn’t get that either!

That, despite a comprehensive education, women don’t piss out of their vaginas. And yes I am a woman.

I remember the moment I realised that ....as a teenager

Thindog · 21/09/2026 13:37

No, relax, the little piggy really did go to the market to shop. I remember the Ladybird book illustration, she had a basket with her.

But the remains of Noah's Ark have been found, haven't they???!!!

Oh, really? Along with the skeletons of whales, mice, tigers, house flies, and kangaroos? 😂

DoubleShotEspressox · 21/09/2026 13:39

@SweetnsourNZ EXCUSE ME?!

And have a mouth full of foam? I always rinse

You can spit out the foam, @Allseeingallknowing - just don’t rinse with water - then you’ll still end up with enough fluoride on your teeth to protect them.

I think what @Bargarran refers to is the findings of archaeological digs on Mount Ararat, Eastern Turkey, that match the given length, shape, etc of said ark. So while not conclusive, people do believe that it hit there.

When my husband and I first cooked together he insisted that a colander was called a corinder. Had to drag him to Tesco homeware to prove it before he would admit he was wrong.

I didn’t know until a couple of years ago you could adjust seatbelts on cars. In my defence I learned to drive decades ago when they were set at fixed points so hadn’t ever noticed that newer cars had more sophisticated technology. I was chuntering to DH about being strangled by a seatbelt and why do all car manufacturers think we’re six foot tall? And he said well why don’t you move the thingy lower down…

Literally found that out a few months ago ..I'm 54..

Edited

I only found this out just now, from you 🤣 now I'm not sure what's going on with ox tail soup, it's just cow tail soup?

Redheadedstepchild · 21/09/2026 14:04

I once worked with a girl who thought bread crusts were nutritionally superior to the crumb. More worryingly, this was in a restaurant and she'd previously worked in a bakery.

“I just remember thinking me dry swallowing some ibuprofen might not be the most affective”

Sorry, but this really made me laugh 😆 You just used to choke down dry medication like an ostrich?! Didn’t it stick in a horrible lump in your throat? I’ve never in my life seen anyone do that!

My late ex-husband used to do this with pain killers, antibiotics and any other medicines he had to take, despite the fact that, when we were still married, I explained to him over and over why it was a bad idea.

It was almost as if he saw it as being a macho thing and that people who drank water with pills were, somehow, a bit weak.

In later life he suffered horribly with acid re-flux and indigestion. I often wondered if it was caused by years of drying swallowing all those various pills.

My dad, an intelligent and well-read person, somehow got to adulthood thinking that it was 'chimley' not chimney.

Oh my god.my mum.always said chimley so I too always said it.
I was in my 30s before I realised (helped by rear watch of Mary Poppins of all things)😀

My boyfriend recently found out that gherkins are just small cucumbers. He is 40

I found this one out very recently too, in my early 30s, and my mind was BLOWN.

REP22 · 21/09/2026 14:12

That cows have to be pregnant in order to produce milk. No idea why it didn't occur to me before.
