What do you think of Miriam margoyles?

DP wants to go and see her and I am not keen. She always strikes me as a posh fat elderly lady who likes to get laughs by saying shocking things interspersed with lots of swearing.

But am I wrong? Is her show cleverer than my impression of her?

She farts a lot

I once found myself walking behind her after seeing her in a live performance. It was all I could do not to kick her fat arse, because although a good actress, she is self-obsessed and rude. This reflects badly on me.

Nothing. But I think people only think she is funny because it's a fat, posh, elderly lady saying those things. A young working class black man saying exactly the same things would not get laughs or a book tour.

I’ve thought she was good in some parts (eg The Age of Innocence), but I’m not mad about the way she seems to have hardened into a sort of Farty, Sweary Ghastly Granny persona in recent years.

I am firmly of the opinion that actors should stick to acting. Unless they are exceptionally well educated and qualified in any other subject on which they wish to opine.

Have seen her live at the Edinburgh fringe. She was very interesting and quite funny. If you want an idea of what she is like, watch some of her documentaries like the ones on Australian society. Don't go by what she is like in interviews.

I’ve never seen her live but from reading reviews she seems to be a highly talented actress who puts a lot of work into her roles. On the other hand I think she’s predictably crude if it’s “an evening with MM”.

I really like some of her acting work.

But after everything I learned about her behaviour on this thread, no I wouldn't pay her money to go and see her.

She isn't just swearing or being a bit shocking; it looks like she's monetising being really nasty towards other people.

The "posh fat elderly lady swearing" thing creates a distracting superficial shock, providing cover for some genuinely vile behaviour going on underneath.

Oh thanks for posting. She's one of those people I feel like I'm supposed to like, but I don't. I find her quite sexist against women, not feminist.
