Not sure if this makes a difference, but I am from Essex so have been bought up around imagine being quite important and I do love to look good, I was about 16 years old when TOWIE started so I have been bought up with that sort of lifestyle in a way, but I’m not to the extreme. I am still very natural looking, I’ve had 2 children and let myself go a little so I have decided I want to get back to how I used to be as I just feel so down about myself.

So currently I take mounjaro which I plan to only use until January, I no longer get my nails done as I prefer them looking natural now, I only get my hair done 3 times a year, I get Botox twice a year, I get nice makeup but I don’t wear a lot and use it rarely, I buy good hair products and I have just decided to get 1ml of lip filler to make them a bit plumper but this will only be once a year as I don’t like the fake look, I just like to look fresh and new! I don’t get any facials, I don’t spend on expensive face creams, I don’t wear designer, I get a lot of my clothes from vinted, body stuff etc, I don’t tan, I don’t have extensions either, apart from one time I tried them and they went horribly wrong, but working it all out I probably spend approx £200 a month on myself, probably a bit more at the minute because of the mounjaro which is temporary. My husband thinks this is outrageous and always comments on how much I spend, but I do work full time, I earn my own money but he is the main earner and earns very well but thinks I overspend.

The reason I am asking is because I am hoping others can say how much they spend each month on theirselves in hopes I’m not that bad!!! I get I don’t need Botox, don’t need lip filler, don’t need my hair done, but then I would just feel so unhappy in myself, and I enjoy pampering and I like to feel good!

Also not asking for judgement here as I know some people will just be dead against this. So just responses from those actually responding to what I have asked please. Thank you x

£20 a month on my hair, I have a pixie cut so need a regular trim
£7 on box hair colour
£7 on a mascara/eye pencil
£6 on face cleanser & moisturiser
£8 on a nice shower gel
£10 on hair products
Maybe £30 on clothes from Vinted
So around £90 a month.
My daughter is a newly qualified beauty therapist so she practices on me, so I may get a free facial or massage every couple of weeks, but if she wasn't, I wouldn't pay to have them done!

Greenwriter76 · 05/09/2026 19:57

Thanks Op as I’ve never actually sat down and worked it out so it’s been interesting!
It doesn’t sound to me as though you have a lot done really - I think anything that helps us feel good, especially as we age, (as long as you’re not going broke for it of course!) is worth it.

My spending (all approx max averages):
Hair cut and roots £110 every 3 months
Skin care £30 every 2 months
Body products £20 every 2 months
Hair products £35 every 2 months
Clothes £50 every 2 months
Make up £15 every 3 months

So maybe £95 max a month.

I’m 50 this year and have this week booked myself an appt to get eyebrows & eyelashes waxed and tinted for the first time ever as I can no longer see well enough without my glasses to do my eyebrows myself, & there was a reduced price on the tinting so I thought I’d give it a go as I generally don’t wear much make up but thought it might save me a job with mascara etc when I do.
I don’t take anything for weight loss or have any regular treatments but I have recently purchased a collagen powder & supplements for help with what I’m pretty sure are some symptoms of perimenopause.

AWomanOfWealthAndTaste · 05/09/2026 19:57

Maintenance WLIs which I anticipate being on long term, about £110 a month. And I had to stop wearing about 75% of my clothes once I got to goal, so that was expensive. I've not yet replaced everything as some of the stuff that no longer fits also hasn't been needed yet, iyswim.

Petty low maintenance other than that. I don't dye my hair or do any tweakment type stuff as it's not my thing.

Cotopaxi · 05/09/2026 20:04

I too am originally from Essex. It wasn't like that in my day.

In answer to your question, in a typical month I'd buy deodorant, toothpaste, maybe a bar of soap. Clothes & shoes get replaced when the current ones are worn out and falling to pieces. Won't need to buy bath stuff as I have somehow managed to acquire a lifetime's supply via a friend who used to do the bodyshop party thing.😂

MxCactus · 05/09/2026 20:14

Hair - cut it myself
Makeup - probably about £20 a month (I just replace things I use when they run out)
SPF - I get a really good broad spectrum natural ingredients one (mineral) but it's pricey, probs £60 a month
Cleanser - £20 a month

Clothes, good knows, this month I spent over £350 😂

I really don't think £200 a month on yourself is very much OP!

I've no idea what brought up being quite important means but I spend more than £200pcm on hair, clothes, skincare and make-up.

Never had tweakments, weight loss drugs, brows or nails. I buy shampoo and conditioner from the supermarket.

It’s obviously a typo for “image being quite important”. Really not that hard to work out.

lippylip · 05/09/2026 20:18

I earn pretty well but life is so expensive, I don’t understand how people spend so much.
I spend maybe £50 a month on toiletries, treatments etc. No botox, filler, nails etc. Maybe £50 a month on clothes & shoes when you add it up.

Sarah2891 · 05/09/2026 20:23

I'm in my 40s and spend barely anything on this stuff. There's nothing I buy every single month. Never botox or beauty treatments. Clothes and moisturiser every few months when needed.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/09/2026 21:13

MaryIngallsRibbons · 05/09/2026 17:14

I stick £260 per month in my ‘health and beauty’ pot which covers haircuts/colour and Botox (both only about twice a year), vitamins/supplements, and yoga classes (10 per month).

Clothes and shoes, probably £800 ish across the course of a year. Includes underwear, swimwear, sports wear, work and casual clothing.

TBH I thought my personal spending was fairly low - some of these comments are reminiscent of the ‘I couldn’t possibly eat more than 2 chicken nuggets’ statements.

Only if you think that not buying into the fashion/beauty industry is a virtue. I don’t. I just don’t personally want to participate in it and see it as a waste of money. I much prefer to watch my savings and ISAs grow.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/09/2026 22:04

I think this thread would have gone differently if in Style and Beauty. For me:

Eyebrow threading £18 every three weeks, but I tint brows and lashes myself
Botox three times a year £200
Clothes I buy a few things each month, higher end high street like Cos. Say £200?
Makeup I tend to only buy when I’ve run out, again higher end high street, Lisa Eldridge foundation, Mac eye shadow, Rhode blush type level. It probably averages out about £30 a month
Skincare is mainly Inkey List and Cerave, again I replace as and when - probably averages out about £10 a month
Nails I do myself

Hair I get cut every four weeks, but I look after my salon’s marketing and social media as a side hustle so don’t pay. The owner cuts it, and I think I would be £80ish for a cut.

Other expenses that might count are contact lenses, £54 a month, and reformer Pilates 2 x a week which is £110 over the month.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/09/2026 23:00

About £80 every three months on face stuff (Boots protect and perfect eye cream, serum, day and night cream).

Haircut every three months or so - £120

Pedicure about twice a year - £60 each time

I don't wear a whole.ot of make up and it is not that expensiive - mainly Elf stuff - probably £10 a month.

Probably about £30 per month on basic toileteroes - shampoo, soap, face wash, depderant, body moisturiser, tooth paste and floss.

I occasionally like to treat myself to fancy bubble baths and face packs from TK Maxx - probably £10 per month.

I don't spend a huge amount on clothes, maybe £60 per month on average.

Perfume is a big indulgence as I like unusual ons, probably buy a £130 bottle every six months.

If we are including exercise then £120 pm on three clases - pilates, yoga and weights - every week

EBearhug · 05/09/2026 19:45

It depends a bit. You can get very cheap basic toothpaste, and you can also get toothpaste that's nearly £20 a tube, which might be very good, but it's not a choice I'm making, and my teeth are in good health, according to the dentist and hygienist.

I just buy whatever is cheapest - it would never occur to me spend £20 on something that gets spat out again after 2 minutes 😂

CostcoFanofThree · 06/09/2026 02:35

i guess it really could add up; hair trim every six weeks, upper lip wax every six weeks, eye brow shape every second visit (so 12 weeks). pedicure about 4X per year.
products i use a few but don't restock all at once; face wash, retinol cream, vit c, skin brightening combo, sunscreen, lip balm. maybe one of these items every 2 months?
clothing; i restock stuff that wears out/gets stained or looses it's shape so i would say 1-3 items per month (but this includes everything from socks to tops and everything in between).
is it more than my dh? he has his hair cut monthly, no products, and clothing about the same he's harder on shoes than i am. razors/shaving cream and some and the occasional other item like a hair trimmer/tweezers.

Biosblbay · 05/09/2026 08:58

@GretaGipsoap and spf for £1.75, bargain. Il take your advice, but in all honestly your either not my age, younger or older, cannot afford it, or just happy in your own skin and don’t do anything, I mean who doesn’t even get their hair cut 😩

Edited

hehe I'm old but have never spent money 'each month' on anything. I might get a haircut once a year. Buy clothes when I need something - which isn't often.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/09/2026 05:36

I don't think I'd include deodorant and toothpaste in this calculation! Or basic moisturiser, shampoo and conditioner. That's just hygiene.

wiredandtired · 06/09/2026 05:43

If you're including hair and clothes then £200 doesn't sound outrageous for someone who prioritises looking nice and put together. Everything is so expensive these days. If it's your own money then it's up to you.

I think OP is talking about the average spend per month. i.e. if you added what you spend over the year and divided it by 12.

A lot of people like to know this for budgeting reasons.

PermanentTemporary · 06/09/2026 06:44

I was doing money over the year then split it x 12. My dentist bills are eye watering but not every month, no. I do think people generally spend more than they realise on this stuff. We were extremely skint when ds was younger, until he was 14 - we cut our own hair at home - and even then we had to buy shoes, coats, socks etc, I still bought a supermarket face cream, and in fact when you buy cheap shoes they fall apart more often (being poor is expensive). This month I have only actually bought a pair of trainers and Mounjaro plus a prescription that I buy every three months, but that adds up to £480.

iamnotalemon · 06/09/2026 06:45

I get my hair highlighted and cut every 3/4 months - that’s probably the biggest expense, otherwise I’ll get a monthly massage, eyelash tint and sometimes a pedicure. Let’s say approx £80 a month throughout the year. Which sounds a lot now I write it down

iamnotalemon · 06/09/2026 06:51

endofthecorridoor · 05/09/2026 13:57

At least 300. Probably more as I use joint accounts to pay for haircuts and regular face creams an shampoo. DH spends less so pays for half my Botox bills or buys me clothes when I spend all my allowance. I have no idea how you would spend less. I don’t have wld or get my nails eyelashes eyebrows or anything done . If we are including gym yoga etc probably more like 450

You have an allowance? That made me cringe.

Tiggy321 · 06/09/2026 07:02

Hair £100 every couple of months, nails sometimes (every few months) £50, moisturiser, makeup max £10 -15 per month on average . No Botox etc (tho need it !) Don’t buy many clothes so maybe £100 every few months ?

cityliving99 · 06/09/2026 07:02

About 200-300 a month.
I am now 60 and feel I deserve it.

I find this an interesting phrase - I barely spend anything but it’s not because I feel I don’t deserve it - I just have no interest in that kind of things. As long as my clothes are comfortable, I’m clean and don’t look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge, I’m happy.

MadamDicey · 06/09/2026 08:20

£250 every 3 months on skincare ,£80 every 6 weeks on haircut and colour , most if not all clothes from vinted or charity shops sometimes £10 a month sometimes £50 sometimes nothing , peleton membership £50 a month ,£20 to £30 on kindle books dont get beauty treatments done think thats it

Maybe she means that she wants to and she feels like she deserves it.
