Not sure if this makes a difference, but I am from Essex so have been bought up around imagine being quite important and I do love to look good, I was about 16 years old when TOWIE started so I have been bought up with that sort of lifestyle in a way, but I’m not to the extreme. I am still very natural looking, I’ve had 2 children and let myself go a little so I have decided I want to get back to how I used to be as I just feel so down about myself.

So currently I take mounjaro which I plan to only use until January, I no longer get my nails done as I prefer them looking natural now, I only get my hair done 3 times a year, I get Botox twice a year, I get nice makeup but I don’t wear a lot and use it rarely, I buy good hair products and I have just decided to get 1ml of lip filler to make them a bit plumper but this will only be once a year as I don’t like the fake look, I just like to look fresh and new! I don’t get any facials, I don’t spend on expensive face creams, I don’t wear designer, I get a lot of my clothes from vinted, body stuff etc, I don’t tan, I don’t have extensions either, apart from one time I tried them and they went horribly wrong, but working it all out I probably spend approx £200 a month on myself, probably a bit more at the minute because of the mounjaro which is temporary. My husband thinks this is outrageous and always comments on how much I spend, but I do work full time, I earn my own money but he is the main earner and earns very well but thinks I overspend.

The reason I am asking is because I am hoping others can say how much they spend each month on theirselves in hopes I’m not that bad!!! I get I don’t need Botox, don’t need lip filler, don’t need my hair done, but then I would just feel so unhappy in myself, and I enjoy pampering and I like to feel good!

Also not asking for judgement here as I know some people will just be dead against this. So just responses from those actually responding to what I have asked please. Thank you x

I'm 58 and I don't GAF, so not a lot. I have a haircut every 6-7 weeks because it's unruly - £25 a pop. No makeup, bit of moisturiser, facial scrub 2-3 times a week so that would come to about £10 a month. I buy new clothes very rarely, I make stuff last and don't care about being fashionable - I have a look that works for me. I get a lot of stuff second hand.

So maybe £50 a month all told?

I do however have an expensive cat habit - I have five, two of whom are on permanent meds.

MaryIngallsRibbons · 05/09/2026 17:14

I stick £260 per month in my ‘health and beauty’ pot which covers haircuts/colour and Botox (both only about twice a year), vitamins/supplements, and yoga classes (10 per month).

Clothes and shoes, probably £800 ish across the course of a year. Includes underwear, swimwear, sports wear, work and casual clothing.

TBH I thought my personal spending was fairly low - some of these comments are reminiscent of the ‘I couldn’t possibly eat more than 2 chicken nuggets’ statements.

Why is not having Botox or not colouring your hair denying yourself?

I am Asian. I don't need Botox or highlights/ lowlights. I don't need vitamins either as I eat pretty well. That's not being mean. I just don't see the point of it. As I said, I have a theatre and gigs habit.

But OP , this comparison is pointless. Some ppl spend a lot, some spend on other things. If you work and can spare the money, spend what you want. It's no one else's business.

friedaklein · 05/09/2026 17:27
  • not being mean, I meant. Anyway, so many posters seem deeply astonished that some of us don't have Botox. The comments on the lines of " I don't see how I can possibly get by with less". Well, by not having Botox!
Delphigirl · 05/09/2026 17:33

I don’t have Botox / lip fillers/ gel nails because I can’t stand that look and don’t see anything wrong with looking more natural. I could afford it all but have zero interest in that.

I’m not suggesting that anyone is denying themselves by not having those things - I wouldn’t either if I didn’t need them! 😄 I don’t get my nails done or spend on other things that others do.
However there is a rather vast chasm between getting six weekly hair cuts, 3 weekly manis etc etc and those saying that they spend £3 per month on bar soap and spf.
I feel like I’m somewhere in the middle so it’s been quite eye opening seeing people say they spend virtually nothing on self care and £20 per year on clothing. Don’t things wear out?! A pack of 7 cheap m&s knickers would be nearly half of that. Likewise for some socks. Maybe people are underestimating?

It's possible some people are underestimating. If you don't buy much, it's hard to keep track. I just realised I have got through a lot of sunscreen this hot summer.

In winter, I buy nearly all my clothes on Vinted. In summer, I basically live in shorts and tees.

BigMartin · 05/09/2026 18:28

Cut and colour - £90 every 8 weeks
Nails £28 -£35 every 3 weeks
skincare approx £40 (mainly skin + me subscription)
gym £25 per month
minimal makeup spend as I only wear it occasionally

Fupoffyagrasshole · 05/09/2026 18:40

I get my hair cut every other pay cheque so 60 every 2 months (maybe even 3 months sometimes )
make up once a year
clothes barely ever
never get nails done waste of money in my eyes

i do spend 60 on my gym membership and feel that’s worth it

I probably wouldn't include things like knickers in a clothing budget as they're just essentials that need replacing regularly - in the same way I wouldn't include the cost of a toothbrush and toothpaste in what I spend on "self care".

Waitingfordoggo · 05/09/2026 18:47

Not very much. I buy maybe 3-4 items of clothing a year, very much on a need rather than want basis. Most of my purchases seem to be sports bras and gym socks as they don’t seem to last very long for me. I’m not interested in fashion and style so I feel lucky cause that saves me a lot of money! I don’t buy make up or have beauty treatments, though I do like a sports massage once or twice a year. I go to the hairdresser 2-3 times a year. So the only things I buy with any regularity are soap, toothpaste, moisturiser and shampoo.

caringcarer · 05/09/2026 18:53

Mounjaro is expensive.

LowryStickman · 05/09/2026 19:03

I don’t have a strict monthly routine.

Usual toiletries and moisturisers. £50.

I have Botox 2-3 times a year at a cost of £300 per session.

I’ve just paid £1k for 6 sessions of laser hair removal, I’ve got one session left. It’s excellent btw.

Dye my own hair every 2 months or so at £30 for two boxes.

I am considering Tixel which is really expensive but looks worth it.

SlugJam · 05/09/2026 19:12

I have my hair cut every 4 months, £45 a time. So approx £12 a month.
I have Skin + Me skincare, plus some additional bits, maybe £35 a month average.
I just replace make up as it runs out and don’t tend to try new stuff, so I’d say that works out at maybe £15 per month over a year.
Clothes probably £50 a month averaged over the year.
Hair care maybe another £15-£20 a month.
No Botox/nails etc but I do have a full body massage every 3 months or so, around £100 a time. So in total maybe £160 a month?

SlugJam · 05/09/2026 19:17

Oh and I also have gym membership but I guess I consider that more ‘health’ than ‘appearance’

NullaEffugium · 05/09/2026 19:23

I don’t consider clothes and hair to be beauty treatments as you can’t be naked and you have to trim your hair.

I do think £200/mo is quite a lot but I’m very much natural. I don’t wear makeup, I don’t style or dye my hair, I don’t take any weight jabs or use Botox, I don’t use filler or anything. Your beauty list is far from the natural look outside Essex.

To put things in perspective, I put £150/mo in a private pension for 15yrs and it’s at almost £500k. So it may not seem like £200/mo is much, but when you think about the wealth you could be building for your retirement and to help your DC, it is no small sum.

BoldNavyCritic · 05/09/2026 19:24

Yes, exactly. Two new pairs of trainers a year, getting ones with supportive soles because I walk miles in them, = £100, for example. New bras, pants and socks over a year probably another £100 (and I have some pants that are probably 20 years old, I wear them to holes and don't get luxury ones in the first place). A new waterproof coat another £100, if it's one that will last 10 years or so. And then there's work clothes, home clothes, occasional clothes for things like weddings. It adds up!

sorry, this was meant to quote earlier posters who replied to my post saying that clothes do need to be replaced sometimes and whether £100/month is a lot for this or not.

Sun cream isn’t a beauty item. It’s skin cancer prevention that every man, woman and child should be using.

fiveyo · 05/09/2026 19:28

Hmm - I have a Hollywood sporadically (used to be once a month before kids). A mani / pedi probably twice a year and I use my toddlers prescription emollient as a moisturiser. I wear make up once a week but it’s minimal and I can’t remember the last time I bought anything.

oh / highlights, wvery couple of months. That’s probably the biggest thing.

mtobrokeme · 05/09/2026 19:30

About £150 - £200.

not sure that equivalent to be honest. I don’t spend much but I’m not ‘denying myself’, it's just not a priority. I’m not performatively being low maintenance, I just am!

stargirl1701 · 05/09/2026 19:38

Hair cut every six weeks £70

Sanex body wash £2

Averno oat moisturiser £5

Nivea roll on deodorant £2

That’s it.

It depends a bit. You can get very cheap basic toothpaste, and you can also get toothpaste that's nearly £20 a tube, which might be very good, but it's not a choice I'm making, and my teeth are in good health, according to the dentist and hygienist.

Fattypantss · 05/09/2026 19:48

Nothing monthly. I buy hairdye maybe every 9 weeks, should be more as I’m all grey at 46 (I don’t want to be grey and never will be), so it’s not often enough and I have grey temples. I cut my own hair.

I just use the same shampoo etc that we get with the shopping for the family.

I look like a sack of shit, but I don’t have any money. I’ve never looked good.

I don’t wear make up, never had my nails done, never had nice clothes, just replaced leggings and t shirts from Primark when they start to get old. I only ever have one pair of trainers which I wear to death and one pair of wellies that I’ve had for years for the winter.

I’d really like to look nice, just once.

Gothwife · 05/09/2026 19:48

I’m spending £150 a month on mounjaro
£60 on nails and eyebrows per month
Root touch up every 4 weeks £40 and I do a full head colour and cut every 12 weeks which is usually £130
Shopping wise I probably spend and £150 ish a month on clothes, sometimes less
Make up and skincare I would say probably £200 every couple of months
