Not sure if this makes a difference, but I am from Essex so have been bought up around imagine being quite important and I do love to look good, I was about 16 years old when TOWIE started so I have been bought up with that sort of lifestyle in a way, but I’m not to the extreme. I am still very natural looking, I’ve had 2 children and let myself go a little so I have decided I want to get back to how I used to be as I just feel so down about myself.

So currently I take mounjaro which I plan to only use until January, I no longer get my nails done as I prefer them looking natural now, I only get my hair done 3 times a year, I get Botox twice a year, I get nice makeup but I don’t wear a lot and use it rarely, I buy good hair products and I have just decided to get 1ml of lip filler to make them a bit plumper but this will only be once a year as I don’t like the fake look, I just like to look fresh and new! I don’t get any facials, I don’t spend on expensive face creams, I don’t wear designer, I get a lot of my clothes from vinted, body stuff etc, I don’t tan, I don’t have extensions either, apart from one time I tried them and they went horribly wrong, but working it all out I probably spend approx £200 a month on myself, probably a bit more at the minute because of the mounjaro which is temporary. My husband thinks this is outrageous and always comments on how much I spend, but I do work full time, I earn my own money but he is the main earner and earns very well but thinks I overspend.

The reason I am asking is because I am hoping others can say how much they spend each month on theirselves in hopes I’m not that bad!!! I get I don’t need Botox, don’t need lip filler, don’t need my hair done, but then I would just feel so unhappy in myself, and I enjoy pampering and I like to feel good!

Also not asking for judgement here as I know some people will just be dead against this. So just responses from those actually responding to what I have asked please. Thank you x

I'm 61, cut my own long hair about once a year because I don't enjoy going to the hairdresser. Have never had my nails done, I just cut them. Don't wear makeup or use cleansers, just soap (my skin is good for my age though as I've always been careful about the sun). Do my own hair removal. No gym as I have a dog instead. No treatments. Maybe £10/month on supermarket self-grooming products? But I do spend a fair amount in fits and starts on clothes, I'd say over £100 a month on average, even though I also keep them for many years in most cases. I know I'm extreme in terms of being low maintenance for most aspects of my appearance, but how do people spend so little on clothes? Wearing them isn't optional, and mine wear out!

Iloveeverycat · 05/09/2026 13:03

Not a lot. I don't do nails, hairdressers or beauty treatments. No gym. Only wear makeup if going out for the evening maybe twice a year.

I agree with a poster upthread, the difference is when you are going to work or not.
When you go to work, you buy and spend far more on ‘stuff’. Hair, clothes, bags, cosmetics. It is a sort of armour you have. You have look the part.

When you stop you no longer need to so much. You get a bit peeved at how much the hairdresser costs rather than ignoring it. Although if I still lived near the best hairdresser I have ever known I would actually pay more for her haircuts and colour. But she was a one off. And I don’t live near there now.
You use what you have more. And only buy what you need or run out of.

That might be true for some, but I wear no more make-up at work than other times, i.e. none. I'm probably having even fewer infrequent hair trims, because I'm loath to spend my precious non-working time on the hairdresser. I wear the same clothes at work as I do on the weekend. I might wear old stuff for things like gardening, but I wouldn't wear them into town any more than going to the office - and I have to be in the office every working day. I will be clean, hair brushed, dressed respectably, but no more than that.

I WFH mostly, and my clothes don't wear out that quickly? I think £100 a month on clothes is quite a lot.

LondonLass2026 · 05/09/2026 13:32

Haircut: £45 month
Every two months Kerastraight hair treatment: £55
Brows: £15 month
Nails: £55 month

Tried Profhilo, botox and lip filler, and none worked.

When my son was young, you can reduce this to around £30 a month.

RancidRuby · 05/09/2026 13:38

It’s hard to give a monthly figure as it will vary, each person posting here will spend different amounts because they have different budgets and different priorities.

What you have to ask yourself is can you afford it and does your husband have a similar amount of fun money to spend himself once all the essentials (mortgage, food, savings etc) have been paid for? If the answer is yes to both of those questions then he’s being unreasonable.

I think it's a lot on bits and pieces but if in a year I buy: a new coat, boots, an occasion frock, pair of shoes and two work dresses, it's about £100pcm and seems more reasonable. Of course I don't have new coats and boots more than once every 5 years but I do buy quality but fewer items overall.

Next year dd is getting married and I'm expecting to blow the budget. If it was the same season as DS's wedding, I wouldn't hesitate to rewear the MoG outfit.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 05/09/2026 13:43

About £15 if we include shampoo and toiletries. A bit more in summer as I work outdoors and need Factor 50 everyday. Never wear make-up and cut my own hair. Never had a facial or manicure and absolutely hate the idea of both.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/09/2026 13:43

I don't think men can criticise us for this kind of thing. My bf complains about how many things I take on holiday even though I take much less than most women and have had comments to that effect during work trips. He'll complain about the time it takes me to get ready, but my makeup takes less than 5 minutes, it's just more time than him so I wouldn't take the DH's opinion into account.

I spend 80E on hair every 6 weeks. I've had filler a couple of times and that was hundreds, but not done it for a while now. I go to a chiropodist every couple of months, but that's more for health than the way my feet look. Same for the gym, I'd argue it's health and not beauty, but is 50E a month. Makeup doesn't have to be bought often so it's difficult to count how much I spend on it, but then there's shampoos, conditioner and shower gel meant for my type of skin and hair so will cost more than my bf's.

I'd be interested in getting some treatments in the future, but I don't see the point of paying for nails at all.

I buy clothes every month, but much more during the sales.

moppety · 05/09/2026 13:45

Hair works out about £45 a month. Nails and lashes are about £130 or so. The occasional pedicure/wax for holidays. Perfume/make-up maybe £30 a month but that’s on average. I don’t really know for clothes honestly. Too much on running gear that’s for sure! Probably £100 a month at least. Oh and a massage every six weeks or so, £50.

Quartzfairy · 05/09/2026 13:48

I spend similar, probably a bit more actually. I’m on Wegovy, so £99 for that. Hair every 6 weeks at £85. Don’t have Botox but tret subscription is £23 per month. I use decent hair care products but by the salon sizes so they last ages. Mid range skincare and make up. I don’t have my nails done, maybe have a pedicure in the summer. I don’t think what you’re spending is unreasonable at all if you can afford it.

Nannyfannybanny · 05/09/2026 13:51

75 and on a pension. £70 every 2 months hair cut,lo lited..I do my own nails. Make up is mostly Avon. I don't spend more than £10 on an item, last thing was a tubing mascara.. Clothes either classic had them a long time, trench mac and cashmere jacket over 40 years. The rest, Vinted.

RaraRachael · 05/09/2026 13:52

Har - trim and colour - £60 every 6 weeks
Massage & eyebrow wax - £42 every 6 weeks
Clothes - virtually nothing. I'm retired so don't really need any more clothes
Don't bother with make up and spend a negligible amount on skincare.
I do my own nails

oatymabuse · 05/09/2026 13:53

Approx £100 a month on hair, clothes, beauty. I am pretty low maintenance and don't get any botox, nails done etc, but I do spend £100 every 10 weeks on hair. Use lidl serum and spf every day that lasts ages, own about 5 make up products that also last forever. Spend approx £500 a year on clothes. If we include fitness then it's £200 a month but to me this is priceless.

Parker231 · 05/09/2026 13:53

Biosblbay · 05/09/2026 09:03

Why is no one getting their hair cut or buying clothes, I just cannot imagine being fully 100% natural. I like wearing natural good makeup, nice hair and just feeling good. I probably could pass with the Botox to be fair, I am only 32!

I’m in my late 50’s. I have my hair cut every six weeks, have a gym membership and a personal trainer twice a week. Never have or will have botex. Don’t wear make up but always use moisturiser with a high spf as we spend a couple of months a year in the south of France and I won’t risk sun damage. Do my own nails with a natural colour varnish.
No budget issues.

endofthecorridoor · 05/09/2026 13:57

At least 300. Probably more as I use joint accounts to pay for haircuts and regular face creams an shampoo. DH spends less so pays for half my Botox bills or buys me clothes when I spend all my allowance. I have no idea how you would spend less. I don’t have wld or get my nails eyelashes eyebrows or anything done . If we are including gym yoga etc probably more like 450

OtterlyAstounding · 05/09/2026 14:00

I'm late thirties, very slim, and not at all 'frumpy', but probably spend about £10 a month, averaged out over the year.

I use moisturiser with SPF, a cleanser and an exfoliating scrub a few times a week, tinted lip balm, and inexpensive perfume, and often get facial products or perfume as birthday gifts, which last me ages.
I keep a small, capsule wardrobe that doesn't date quickly (or at all, for many pieces), and am very good at buying things on offer at a bargain - my biggest expense for clothing is probably yarn, if that counts, as I love knitting myself jumpers (think modern patterns or forties vintage, in fine, light yarn).
I cut my own hair (and everyone else's - not a trained hairdresser, but many years of practice), usually into a layered, curly lob these days.

I'm pretty cheap to keep! 😆

DustyMaiden · 05/09/2026 14:01

Highlights and trim £175 manicure and pedicure £80 . Essex is too expensive.

Runningupthehillagain · 05/09/2026 14:06

Monthly
Hair £140
Nails and brows £110
Skin products £30 average
Clothes as and when

I hardly ever where make up unless I’m going out and usually in work clothes or dog walking stuff. I’ve collected nice clothes over the years so will wear those when I go out.

I’m amazed by the price of hairdressers. My daughter only has a trim and it cost £60 from a neighbour who works from her home. My son’s costs £30 for a cut.

Liverpoolxxx · 05/09/2026 14:09

Probably about £10.

Makeup is years old. Occasionally use face cleaner but not every day. Don’t use moisturiser.

Think I paid £20 for a haircut last year. Previous time I’d paid for it probably 10 years earlier. I have a friend who’ll do it for free. (She’s not trained but she enjoys it and my hair grows quickly so I’m not bothered if it’s too short.)

Clothes when needed, ie when they have holes in.

Of course you can spend less - you don’t have Botox

Bufftailed · 05/09/2026 14:22

Haircut rare. 1-2 x a year max. Should do it more

Wear make up not v often. No. 7 moisturizer but lasts quite a while. £19 gym membership if that counts. I spend v little, but should do more. Am tight about it.

Jerrybalanitis · 05/09/2026 14:24

Its all relative though isnt it? At the moment, I can afford 25k a year on me stuff and want to look and feel a certain way. In a few more years, I will probably leave corporate life and live in the UK and spend most of my time on horseback and would look a bit silly prancing round full of fillers and Gucci then and no way would I have that income to waste. It doesnt make anyone better or worse or right or wrong. As usual its a race to the bottom on here but in real life, people arent so bothered or even notice how others live generally.

Sunbringer · 05/09/2026 14:27

Hair - shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant spray and leave in conditioner maybe every 2 months. So about £10 per month. I cut my own hair.

Makeup - every 6 months I buy mascara and brow gel. So £25. Everything else I’ve had for years. Maybe add in a lip balm every 2 months for £3. So around 37/12 =3.0833 per month.

Skincare - £20 a month. I have eczema so need moisturisers and cleanser.

Clothes a bit more but I often buy from Vinted. Maybe £400 a year so 400/12=33.333 a month. However, I do sell on old clothes that don’t fit though so earn some of this back.

I don’t get beauty treatments because I can’t afford them.

So all in that’s around £65 a month. Which is way more than I thought actually but I would say I’m pretty thrifty. I can’t exactly go without much of it except I suppose the clothes and makeup.

I would say if you can afford £200 a month it’s fine and not a huge amount. I wouldn’t bother with the lip injections though.
