Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

I’ve made a number of expensive mistakes along these lines ( computers!!!) but I try hard not to dwell on them and just move on (‘it’s only money’… so I will not try to recall the details now!

The plot thickens. I installed app, no cover currently in my name. Phoned rac up, they can't find any trace of an account! Neither insurance or breakdown. Its been sent off to be looked at! Not getting my hopes up, but it potentially looks like a cock up their end and it might work in my favour!

That will be because you said it was with the AA ......

Signed up for Wegovy pills, yes I lost weight but only from feeling constantly sick so I decided to stop
Unfortunatley it seems that my "low price" £70 was only due to me signing up for 6 months. Had to pay £100 to get out of it

I had a similar issue but managed to escape without paying via the pharmacist.

Did not return clothes on time = £300.

I’m surrounded by parcels as I keep buying on Vinted, even when I can’t really afford it, and I’ve had to borrow some money. It’s just so addictive! And lots of sellers have no idea of the true value of their items so that makes it even more tempting. I’m sitting on a lot of money in theory but have to put in the time & effort to resell things. Meanwhile a lottery win would be great!

Your last point about the company having difficulty processing the return rings alarm bells with me. I bought something online, started a return immediately it arrived, then had this same difficulty. Then we were outside the 30- day returns window and their computer couldn't refund it, much to their regret (!). I am persuing a refund with my bank. Not sure how this can help you except to say keep on at them.

Thank you, I hate to say it on a thread about losses, but I did keep on at them and they decided to refund me and told me to keep the item. I hope you get your money back.

I've bought 2 washing machines in the last 2 weeks. The first one I chose because it was really simple, with just buttons and a digital count-down clock to show how long is left on the cycle. It was cheap, too cheap. On the first use on a half load it started making banging noises and I had to stop the machine. I tried again and it did the same. The spin cycle is useless, everything came out far too wet. Trying to get a refund has taken up a lot of my time and energy, many phone calls and having to get shirty.
The second machine was £200 more than the first, and what I should have bought to begin with. Buy cheap buy twice. I knew this, I just wanted a simple machine!
Luckily I am in a position where I can afford to wait for a refund, and I am resilient enough and persistent enough to get one.
My advice is always spend as much as you can possibly afford on white goods.

Did the fitter forget to remove the retaining clips?

ladyofroo · 06/09/2026 12:20

I spent £150 on my favourite expensive perfume, dropped it in the sink, bottle smashed and the entire thing ended up down the drain. I had a few drops left.

On the plus side, my bathroom smelt lovely for a day or two

About to say the same! The retaining parts are still on the drum!!

Being quite capable I installed it myself (I won't do that again as they can then try to argue you did something wrong) and did everything correctly. The drum is oddly shaped in that it is very shallow in depth. The machine is unable to balance even a small load. Other people have said the same of the model so it's not just me. With the second machine I paid for installation, and it has a 5 year warranty. If it lasts even 5 years that's £100/year which I can live with. I've been on the breadline most of my life so these mistakes make me very anxious even though I now don't need to panic over the money.

A similar thing happened to me a few years back, brand new bottle of very expensive perfume, was on my bed bundled up in a towel with a few other bits as I was halfway through sorting stuff out for an overnight bag, I went downstairs to the kitchen and little ds had been most helpful bringing me down the towel bundle only it all Unravelled in the kitchen and the new bottle smashed on the porcelain floor tiles. Sob 😭

My husband got scammed out of not one but TWO mobile phones while getting a new contract with ID mobile.
His new iphone 17 arrived but was getting very hot for no reason. Called what he thought was ID mobile and they said they'd accidentally sent him a display model and to send it back, here's the label take it to the post office.
Then what he thought was ID mobile sent a new phone to Currys for him to collect. But it was the wrong phone and on a different network! He calls the scammer again (still thinking it'd ID mobile) and they say oh dear, send it back here's the label.
And he sent it back!
The scammers had taken out another contract in his name for EE which he managed to get cancelled. He called the police fraud prevention and everything and even though they have the local address that the phones were sent to!
so he then had no phone and a new phone contract he still had to pay for, I ended up giving him my phone and getting myself a new one!
absolute palava, had to take time off work to deal with it!
I was absolutely fuming with him!

Well, it was only a suggestion because I've seen installers do that. But feel free to be snipey if it makes you feel better

I phoned three local roofers for a garage a few years ago - first one was clearly on cocaine and wanted £1000 upfront so I managed to get him out of house, second one quoted too high, third one wanted £500 upfront - did a shit job, I then had to pay an extra £800 for someone to put extra supports in. Later found out that second one was son in law of third one. I felt so angry at being manipulated - they were actually quite scary so didn’t feel that I could review them on check a trade as they knew I lived alone.

So many men suck don't they. 💐

Wow, I think you read my answer in your head in a way I totally did not write.

Summerhillsquare · 06/09/2026 16:19

Many roofers over the years, the most tricky of trades to find decent.

Recently, a poorly fitted banister and hand rail, £950. I'm having to sand and varnish myself, and one of the newel posts wobbles.

I've also just bought a cheap washing machine so bracing myself :(

That reminds me of when OH booked car hire from an airport for 02.00. When we turned up at 2pm they had cancelled the booking as ‘no show’ . No refund of course as Ts and Cs innit…Even though our flight details were on the booking c and there are no flights arriving at that airport at 2am… They expected a rebook so we just went next door to another company.

Not me but DH s few years ago. Was slightly (very)pissed and took his jumper off before bed and dropped it on the floor. Unfortunately hed forgot to take his brand new very expensive glasses off. Got up and stood on them.
Also drink related- ds left his steam deck on top of his heater. 600 quid down the drain.

Along those lines, my friend (pissed) took his new, hard contact lenses out and put them in a glass of water by his gf's bed. She drank them 😂

Oh God this sounds like me too. I'm ashamed to say I've missed 3 flights (I do have ADHD and this was one of the prompts to finally seek a diagnosis). The most inexcusable one was because I went to Gatwick instead of Heathrow. I have no idea how I managed to do that, I had printed boarding passes and everything. I actually live much nearer to Heathrow.

Had to pay again (4 of us) and get a flight from Heathrow later that day. Did you know there is a bus that runs between Gatwick and Heathrow for exactly this sort of situation? There were other fuckwits on the bus who'd made the same mistake which made me feel slightly better. The shame!
