A thread for everyone who’s made an expensive mistake recently

Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

I messed up ours earlier in the year too, my mum’s sick and i thought we could move dates for free if needed turns out we couldn’t! A budget holiday probably became an average priced holiday.

Deathinvegas · 03/09/2026 11:19

I’m trying not to dwell on it.

Booked flights. All good. Airline cancelled the flight and rebooked it for stupid o clock without speaking to me. Went through the booking app to rebook them, found a great flight earlier that day, rushed to book it as I was at work and the flight was for an important family emergency departing that day. Turned out I actually cancelled the return flight and rebooked it for before the outbound flight (which remained unchanged). Had to make an international call to fix it, cancel and rebook both flights, and ended up £400 out of pocket on what was originally a £200 round trip. I feel better after reading this thread.

So many holiday/flights/hotel cock ups. I'm going to be checking every detail in triplicate next time I have to book on line!

Just yesterday - came home from Siena with a flight from Florence. Train to Florence was fine, went to tram stop outside the station and bought a ticket. Got on tram to the airport. One stop before the airport ticket inspectors come round - I handed them my ticket and apparently when you get on the tram you have to stamp it with the time (as they are only valid for 70 minutes). EU40 fine for EU2 tram journey I had actually paid for......

I gather that they make a fortune from unwitting tourists with this.

I realised this morning that my rac breakdown cover has been renewed. I thought id cancelled 2 years ago because we're with the AA. Nope, almost a grand up the swanee. And trying to get through to them is impossible. Im not installing an app just to cancel it!

Paid for an architect to draw up house conversion plans. Paid architect, building regulations, and engineer drawings. Cost approx 7k.
Covid happenned - planning lapsed - and costs for the project went through the roof (literally) and never did the work.
Makes me cross every day.

I was once booking car hire on line and must have nudged the cursor without realising it and booked a car in some random place. Luckily it was with Hertz so I was able to ring them and they corrected it, apparently it happens a lot.
Another time I was booking flights for our trip to the US and found a really good deal on flights from Manchester, much cheaper than I'd found before. It was such a good deal that I took a hard look and realised it was from Manchester, New Hampshire so a much shorter flight than ours would be, hence the good price.

Me too!

Although, since I made an almighty fuck up at work, and forgot to book a whole event, for 12 people, over 2 days, including food, etc.
I was in a bit of a state about it.

Particularly when my manager had already remarked that i had a habit of being a bit slapdash.
He’s an absolute darling, and he was right.

I phoned the other senior manager and she was wonderful about it, and helped me calm down, and told me it was all fixable.
Which it was, but it certainly didn’t feel like it at the time.
Then i was in a meeting with the other manager, who were so lovely about it, it made me cry.

My 2 children are off to uni this month. After hearing all the news about meningitis outbreaks, I booked them both vaccinations at Boots. As soon as all the jabs had been done (2 jabs per child at £110 per jab), the Govt announced a free vaccination program for their age group. £440 lost because I was caring and proactive🤦‍♀️

That's not a mistake but I get the annoyance. Don't beat yourself up for doing what you thought (and what was) the absolute right decision at the time 💐

Momoftwoscallywags · 01/09/2026 16:22

I did this too. 😊

Me too but some school pupils contracted it too so to me it was worth it.
Imagine how you'd had felt had they got it and hadn't been vaccinated?
Lots of places had run out of vaccines so there will be many others that have done the same.
You can't put a price on life.

We’ve just bought and moved into a house @opand two weeks in the bath tub has a significant leak underneath, dripping downstairs onto the passage way. Now a hole has been opened up to find the source. Imagine a huge hole above your head as you come in and out of the house everyday and climb the stairs. And, and , and the buyers of our old house have changed their bloody minds!

“Onward christian soldiers, marching as to war!”

I actually said at the time that I bet it will become available eventually, as so many young people/families have been affected/ traumatised by it and it would be the right thing to do.

My husband then looked me straight in the eye and said " and what if our boys catch it and they die in the meantime while waiting for that to happen? just so we can save a measly £440"

Well when you look at it like that then it's probably the best money we have ever spent.

Absolutely true 😍

This is wild. Your not installing the app, when it will save you the money?

ALJT · 04/09/2026 23:03

Booked to go camping tonight.. paid for in full at a decent campsite in the lakes.. woke up this morning and decided I couldn’t be bothered so lost the money lol

ZombieZebra · 05/09/2026 11:34

I entered a competition where you had to choose between the names of movie stars and then the organiser revealed the name by scratching it off (like a scratchcard). Two of my faves were on there but it was a tenner to enter and I could only afford to enter once. You guessed it, the other one won 🤦‍♀️ That cost me £200. Gutted.

It cost you £10, surely?

The plot thickens. I installed app, no cover currently in my name. Phoned rac up, they can't find any trace of an account! Neither insurance or breakdown. Its been sent off to be looked at! Not getting my hopes up, but it potentially looks like a cock up their end and it might work in my favour!

DH ordered a large takeaway for us and extended family. There was a faint alarm bell when he said he was using an app - the restaurant is a small, family-run affair unlikely to have their own app. But we were all hungry and I decided to leave the mental load to him.

5 minutes before he was due to collect, he discovered the restaurant was 200 miles away. And he‘d paid in advance.

Divinedownload · 05/09/2026 19:59

Left a suitcase on the transfer coach didn’t get it back. £300 bottle of creed for husbands 40th on there. A lot of money for us as I know money is relative.

BeardofHagrid · 05/09/2026 20:27

Having to log into your Nectar before you complete your eBay purchases has really done a number on me :( I keep forgetting to do it. Some sellers will cancel for me and let me re-purchase, some will not. I wish it was automatically done for you like it used to be!

LoftyPlumLion · 05/09/2026 20:32

I got 3 points and then £80 fine for yellow box junction infringement.

I take full responsibility but am grumpy about it.

Bear1789 · 05/09/2026 21:15

Wasn't paying attention whilst out for a run, tripped and knocked my front tooth out. Just been quoted £3.5k for an implant.

ChristineKo · 05/09/2026 21:34

My husband and I ate a airport restaurant and the food was truly awful and it cost $81 dollars!!!! I'm still kicking myself

Feduptryingusernames · 05/09/2026 21:42

Same, I lost £800 earlier in the year on a cancelled booking.. don't ask.
