Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

I bought the wrong car. At auction.

I was trying to buy a low cost, low insurance car for my son.

Was busy in work but had auction on on my phone, just the video not the sound. Had my eye on the auction... saw one of the cars I wanted (1.0L engine) come up but the bidding went too high very quickly. Ah well I thought. Looked down again, same car and the money was much lower. Bid £2200 (with fees this would be about £2700), I was the last bidder... but it didn't say sold on the screen. Nor did it say sold provisionally. The estimated price was a bit higher than that. So I rang them. "Did i get that car in lot 15?" "You're not the highest bidder" "i was though" "ah, you're the higher on lot 16".

Same car brand, same model but not the same year, condition or engine size (1.5L so insurance group much higher). The estimated price on this one was £1000 higher so i thought my bid wouldn't be accepted. Sadly, it was. The auctioneer was going to try to get rid of it for me by offering it to others (it's cheap, low mileage, but needs work) but that was almost 2 weeks ago and I haven't heard anything positive since really. Don't wanna keep pestering the poor bloke but I'm in limbo now.

So yeah. Really really really stupid.

You are better negotiating a day rate with them, especially if paying in cash, probably not the best way to pay tbf in cash if you want guarantees etc but it's a cheaper route, most of the young boys, I wouldn't even have on site if I am honest unless you have someone to supervise them, if there is a way to cause an accident they seem to find it with their carry on and not paying attention. There are a few younger guys that are not too bad, but they are in the minority.

Tried to clean to quickly (house renovations and dust is terrible) and shoved 4 candles in glasses in the dishwasher. Completely ruined it😩 we really didn't need this extra expense as it's qute new. I can only blame menopause brain.

going to london to visit friends a few years back on the train. i had a season ticket for the first half of the journey and bought a ticket going the rest of the way. on the train, when i was already past my season ticket stop, i let my friends know i was on the way. they promptly let me know that i had got the wrong weekend, and we were meeting on the next!

didnt even cross the barriers once i got to london - just got out of the train and straight on the one going back. was hoping the conductor wouldn't come round until i was past my season ticket stop.

well the train had barely even started moving when the conductor arrived. i tried to fob him off by saying i'd accidentally missed my stop but of course he didn't believe a word of it. had to buy another ticket back. felt a complete idiot and i paid £100 just to go to london and then straight back.

Have you tried selling them on Twickets? Got to be worth a try (no connection other than being a satisfied user having previously had to sell some concert tickets)

Booked tickets for a gig abroad. Booked the hotel. Then managed to book the flights for the wrong weekend 😂

I won £100 on premium bond. Tried to deposit the cheque using my bank app, but got the 'try later' message. Put the cheque in a 'safe place' and now can't find it.

Had a new sofa delivered for the kids retreat. Bloody heavy thing. Typically for me I made it my mission to get it down there myself, all set up and lovely for when everyone got home. Scratched the lovely floorboards throughout the house to get it there REALLY BADLY. So bad. And now we have to look at that every day. Took the shine off the new couch, for sure.

Booked tickets back in May to fly to best mates birthday party next week, bargain price of £172, snapped them up in a rush, pleased I'd ticked it off my to do list.

Few days ago a mutual friend asked what time I was getting in and did I want to share a cab, double checked them to discover I've booked them from the city the party is in to my city return (so wrong direction each way)

Did something similar with some outside lights, bought them when doing extensive renovations, eventually got round to having them fitted (more money) didn’t like them but lived with them, didn’t get used much but kept getting hit by cars on our driveway (mostly me) until about 12 months later they stopped working altogether. Well that was a few years ago and they’ve just sat forlonely since then at crazy angles, every year or so my husband keeps saying we must get them fixed much to my horror

Just before lockdown I had some expensive dental work done over £1000 - bit into something and the double crown fell off. Explained this to the dentist receptionist who was still taking calls but not seeing anyone - they said nothing could be done and to wait. Went back weeks later and my teeth had moved and the cap no longer fit. Dentist was horrible and said ‘doesn’t fit now will need to be totally redone’. I’m still so cross that I didn’t have the sense to buy some temporary cement stuff (I honestly didn’t know it was a thing!) or that the dentist didn’t recommend I do this. It was first lock down when everyone was a bit panicked but I’m still so upset about my mistake but also the way the dentist was so off hand with me. I’d saved for over a year.

£600 for curtains? Fuck my old boots! Dm has a similar bay lounge window, lovely curtains but certainly not £600!

Lost something worth about £300 pounds whilst out and about. Realised I'd left it behind less than 5 mins after moving on, but it had already gone. Not the end of the world, but disappointing.

Similar. A few years ago, I misunderstood a tree surgeon recommendation and ended up with a random man with a hired van. He turned up and I paid £600 for nothing. Tree barely touched. Had to get a bone fide person in the following week….

I bought some gorgeous new shoes in February for a wedding in August.
My feet were too swollen from the heat to wear them 😞 they might go on my feet again in November!

Bought a Eurostar ticket for my son to join us in Paris at Easter and then he couldn’t come. Changed the date to later in the year thinking he might do a trip on his own at some point. That hasn’t been possible, so I logged on today to change it again and found that the booking was for today so we’ve lost it. Grr. £150 down the drain.

I feel your pain, I had a filling for a chipped tooth, looked great, a few days later I stupidly bit into an apple and out it came. I always now chew on the other side....

I got ill on holiday last week, gasteroritis type thing but got scared as on my own with 2 little kids and thought I was gonna faint. I always have travel insurance so got hotel to get private doctor to come see me, they were great, probably too thorough various tests etc but fixed me up. I was checking insurance afterwards and realised I had forgotten to declare mounjaro, I'm someone who never gets ill or goes to gp so when the reminder to declare medical stuff came through before the holiday it just never occurred to me that I needed to declare mounjaro. So has now cost me £1200.

Even worse, I had anti-diarrea pills provided by gp for mounjaro but had never experienced that side effect before so hadn't brought them with me, nor did I bring any electrolytes drinks. Even more irony, I discovered afterwards that I was accidentally insured twice as I had the insurance I'd got out specifically for this holiday but I'd also accidentally auto-renewed the annual insurance. But as I hadn't declared mounjaro on either, I can't claim at all.

Feels better to get that off my chest, definitely one of my stupidest moments. And yet more evidence that I probably should organise that ADHD test... :)😀

DD left her passport in the seat pocket on a connecting flight, we missed the connecting flight but got the passport back had to buy new flights which were £2400 they felt sorry for me and only charged for one seat!
Can't claim it back as they found the passport.

I know you said recently but this still stings... In the late 90's, I was doing a bit of shopping and had parked in a multi story car park with speed humps on the way out. I had planned on going for a swim after my shopping and realised that if I didn't leave immediately I'd have to pay full price (£1) rather than 50p for an off peak swim. I drove my 30 year old VW Beetle too fast over the speed humps in the car park that the chassis fell off and it ended up costing me £800 to repair 😳All to save 50p.

More recently, a few weeks ago, a Farrow & Ball paint colour mistake. Had always planned on using Drop Cloth but had a last minute change of heart and used Mizzle in the hallway. I absolutely hate it. For about 5 minutes a day at dusk it looks ok. Only a £63 mistake but still.

Try Mint Maccaroon. Closest I found.

Bought a car for £2,900.

Kept it for 7 years.

Pretty much held its value because of what it was.

Then had to buy a new car due to imminent arrival of baby.

Got offered £2,500 for the obsolete car but turned it down as they seemed to be going for more on AutoTrader.

Had baby.

Never got round to selling the car.

Continued to pay tax, MOT and insurance for a couple of years. So, hundreds of pounds per year.

Then the tax ran out without me realising whilst it was parked on the pavement outside our home.

DVLA did a sting in the area. It got clamped. I got a hefty fine.

I then sold it for £1,500.

I dread to think how much it cost me, in the end 😔
