Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

Needed a new vent for bathroom, bought an expensive one that was recommended but electrician couldn’t come out for ages - by the time he did and told us it was the wrong thing, it was too late to return it. Sold it for a quarter of the price…

also so many 1 week free trials that I have forgotten to cancel….

Relatives sat in the airport watching their flight take off without them because they read the departures board wrong and we're too busy shopping to hear their names being called!

Talking of stupidity tax: a few years ago, I impulsively (THANKS ADHD) spent $400 on an autographed item from one of my favourite bands, for sale on a 'vintage band merchandise' site. Afterwards (why not BEFORE??!!) I thought I would check out the online store's reputation, only to have it confirmed that the site was a massive scam. I messaged them to cancel my order, which of course they refused. Fake autographed item never did show up... More recently, received 2 separate parking tickets at $45 each for parking too long outside my apartment building. I have a space in the underground parking lot that I already pay for, but currently have limited mobility and the street parking meant less walking, Also could have paid for an annual street parking permit for only a few dollars more than the bloody parking tickets. I make no sense.

Didn't put my pen into a fridge for the first 8mths. List nearly 3 some in that time! No idea why they say to put it into the fridge... made no difference to my weight loss!

@Meeesh once opened you keep at room temperature. You only keep the pens refrigerated while they’re in storage waiting to be started.

If you take a photo of your room, and upload it to chat GPT, you can ask chat to show you the image with any paint colour you fancy - saves you spending time and energy on a colour you don’t like

DH just purchased tickets for a place we have a membership to. In his defence, our membership was bought for another place but this one is included in the price and he didn’t realise. Not £££ but enough!

Small business. First ever task I delegated and let someone else entirely take over. Lost £20k due to accountants cock up 🙈. Lesson learned. There’s a reason for being a control freak.

£60k a year worse off? I’m lucky if I get paid £60k in 3 years! and I’m university educated working in essential healthcare with 22 years experience 🥺 so my expensive mistake is doing that then 😶

My biggest financial mistake was getting married.

I already owned my house which he moved into when we got together.

I had a deed of trust completed by a solicitor when we married where he agreed that he had no claim on my property.

When I divorced him for his adultery with my best friend I ended up having to sell my house to pay the CF anyway because I was advised by my divorce solicitor that going to court was always a risk and it could not be guaranteed that a judge would agree he deserved nothing from the property.

I had serious health problems at the time (cancer) and could not face the fight and the uncertainty so paid him off.

I then had to take out a mortgage to buy myself a new smaller home and am still paying for that now.

My ex husband on the other hand moved in with the ex best friend into her beautiful house in a very exclusive area and had no need to get a mortgage himself.

He is like a giant cuckoo moving into other birds nests and taking them over.

It still rankles and makes me wonder what was the point of having a deed of trust anyway if they aren’t watertight.

You know they’re ok out of the fridge up to 30c for 30 days?

made a number of calls on my mobile to singapore...not thinking of how much it would cost....and got a phone bill of £695 the following month :-(

I know this isn't the point of the thread but how many people on here are using Farrow and Ball to paint their houses!? I have three kids at boarding school and take extremely expensive holidays that many of you would probably dismiss as a waste of money/expensive mistake but have never bought one pot of that paint.... because at £61 on each pot of paint, and maybe £750 per room EACH year, that is the ultimate expensive mistake.... especially if you get it wrong!

@Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit I have three female friends who were utterly taken to the cleaners by waste of space exes who demanded a massive payoff when they divorced. It was money they had before the wedding. Nothing to do with the partner and still off they waltzed. Makes me absolutely sick.

Tbh it is all paid for. Nearly all of the neighbours have said how long it has taken - looks good but when will they finish it? - so if he is happy leaving his board up with half finished work everyone knows should have taken a couple of weeks, that is on him. It doesn't shower him in glory either way as everyone knows I have paid in full now.

Before this year I've never been the victim of a crime and this year I have been TWICE. New bike stolen (with professional bolt cutters, in broad daylight, in the middle of a city square) and card scam. I had some back from insurance etc but in total this has cost me £550.

Can't believe how easy it apparently is to get away with crime. In both these cases the police have basically said thanks for reporting, got no leads, sorry nothing to pursue further.

F&B is a waste of money unless you use their primer. And even then, I’m not sold on the quality. The colours are gorgeous mind.

Booked NCP airport parking recently for a day holiday. Automatic anpr barriers to let you in and out. End of the holiday the barriers didnt lift and the screen said we owed £670!!!!!!! Checked the booking confirmation and id paid £67 for one hour only and left our car there for 10days. They wouldn’t let us out to rectify later and we didn’t have it, so my partner ended up tailgating someone out. I have emailed to try and sort but Still waiting for the fine to come through 😩 it was very stressful!

Decorated my front room ( its front room diner in one so long) and i bloody hate it 😒 so now looking for new wallpaper and paint thats £300+ down the pan .

I actually said at the time that I bet it will become available eventually, as so many young people/families have been affected/ traumatised by it and it would be the right thing to do.

My husband then looked me straight in the eye and said " and what if our boys catch it and they die in the meantime while waiting for that to happen? just so we can save a measly £440"

Well when you look at it like that then it's probably the best money we have ever spent.

Reversed into someone's nice car in a supermarket car park. Didn't see it.
One month earlier, reversed out of my drive into a neighbours' old banger, didn't see her. Informed insurance both times. That's my next car insurance going through the roof. Have never had any insurance issues before so was clearly clueless as to how these things work.

I always book our holidays , flights ,parking etc. last year booked it all , as we were driving to the car park I told the OH to go into some random
car park on the right instead of the left. Told him when we had got through security and were sitting in ‘spoons that i thought we were in the wrong car park . Obviously we couldn’t leave and the car sat there until we came home 2 weeks later , charge was £800. It’s a good job he loves me 🤣
