A thread for everyone who’s made an expensive mistake recently

Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

Ive used the Laura Ashley Duck egg blue paint several times over the years. I think they still do it.
I agree.

I have form for making silly errors. The two that come to mind are:
On holiday not booking the correct number of nights at a hotel and having to add another on.
Booking tickets to the 2023 rugby World Cup in France through what was an awful queuing experience, I thought I’d bought 2 tickets to a quarter final for me and my partner. No, I’d bought a ticket for two quarter finals. So I had to quickly go back online and hope to get two more. Luckily they allocated the seats together!

I’m sure I have more and will post them when I remember!

I never keep mine in the fridge

We travelled into London twice with the kids for cheap days out in the summer holidays. Free museums etc. never actually free but you know… anyway, Both in the same week. Paid the ULEZ for the first day then as I knew we were heading back a few days later set up an account and thought I put auto pay on. Checked my bank a week after as we were literally making sure we had enough food money to get to the end of Aug and noticed the second ULEZ payment hadn’t come out. Realised I’d only set up an account and n it turned on the auto pay. Now only thing I can do is wait for the fine to come though the post and panic on how I’m actually meant to pay it.

But, why? Why not just all go on the holiday you have booked and paid for?

Oh we had a similar drama, bloody Gatwick, had booked into the long stay parking, arrived and the barrier registered our number plate and welcomed us “welcome TheChosenTwo” so in we went, parked up and got the bus to the terminal and off we went. Upon our return we went to drive out and it was telling us we needed to pay £680 - couldn’t work it out. Turned out we were obviously parked in the wrong car park! Infuriating that it registers you though and doesn’t tell you you’re in the wrong car park!
Obviously our error but we’ve always used the car parking there and had never made that mistaken before. A very annoying end to what had been a brilliant holiday.

I was talked into ordering a very expensive wedding dress at one of those shops where they bring you glasses of prosecco and do a hard sell… I regretted it almost immediately but the shop was closed for bank holiday weekend. I called up first thing Tuesday and was told that the order had already been placed and it was too late to cancel. I sold it unworn on Vinted for 2k less than I paid for it… 😢😬

Glad it isn’t just me - we try and go from Luton now as it is our nearest airport - we get an uber 😜

Booked a non refundable hotel 3 times this summer, couldn’t go to any event so lost hundreds. I don’t know why I kept going for the cheaper non refundable option because I could just do the refundable one and then if the cheaper price was available the night prior, cancel it and book the cheaper one. I feel very stupid.

Sorry I phrased this wrong, I booked annual leave not an actual holiday.

So surely you just change the AL…

Mine is i bought expensive tickets for a concert ( on a resale site -I was desperate) almost a year in advance, completely forgot the date and booked our annual holiday for the same time :( I cant even resell tickets as theres some sort of lock/ ban on me reselling them - even thou they were resold to me. Gutted to miss the concert and gutted about the money too. But i am having a nice holiday!.

Yeah. That should be easily remedied.

About a year ago my husband started muttering about changing the car. Over the course of various conversations, I expressed the view that we’d only had it two years, it always costs a lot when you part-ex etc etc.
Fast forward and it got a massive fault (electrical) which we’ve just had to pay £2500 to get fixed, and the warranty didn’t cover it. Also during that time the car lost about £3K in value…

She says in her post that she’s not able to ☹️

Reading can be beyond some people

Is everyone incapable of reading these days?!

I said it should be easily remedied. It obviously isn’t straightforward, otherwise it would have been the first thing she did.

This happened a few years ago but still rankles. We wanted a Roman blind with black out for an odd shaped window, not large but an odd size rectangular shape. We decided to use a local firm with good reviews, à woman rep came out with a pattern book. She was asking lots of questions about me and my husband, jobs, how long we had lived there, went on a bit. I think she was sussing how much they could charge us. We paid £600 for one nondescript blind. I hate that blind, it reminds me of our utter stupidity.

My neighbours thought my wisteria was causing damp and I went with a recommended arborist who did a decent enough job cutting it back but the scaffolders who came to repair their gutters just chopped it to the ground so I needn’t have bothered. £400. It’s growing back I just need to train it.

Bought a pair of reduced Nike trainers a few years ago in a fit of madness. Still paid over £70.
Never really liked them. Didn't fit properly.
Wore them twice.
Yesterday donated them to a local Charity Shop.
