Do you have a TV license?

It seems to me more and more people just don't bother. I do have one, though don't ever watch 'live' TV, I do watch iplayer and other catch up. I watch Netflix mostly.

Do you bother? If so, how old are you? (Im 49 and remember the adverts!)

Yes. I'm 52.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 26/08/2026 09:02

We do. I’m 37 and DH 42 - we use iPlayer a lot and I watch a fair bit of live TV via streaming services.

IsThisLifeNow · 26/08/2026 09:03

yes, 45 and have 2 small kids who watch iplayer a lot!

KingscoteStaff · 26/08/2026 09:03

Yes, 55. As does DS, 24 and DD, 22.

catdistributionsystem · 26/08/2026 09:03

No, because we genuinely don’t need one. We don’t watch any live TV and nobody in the house watches BBC iPlayer.

We are 32 and 39.

lljkk · 26/08/2026 09:04

I don't have a tv license.
I never watch any streaming service in my house. I would never use ITV catchup or similar streaming services at my address without a license. The bumpf you sign when you decline to get a license is very explicit that something like ITV streaming would require a license. And all their followup emails and written notices say same thing.

I love BBC radio & sounds & website & intend to get a license anyway, sometime soon. Still doubt I'll be watching... too hard to find the time.

NeartoNewquay · 26/08/2026 09:04

Yes and it wouldn't occur to me not to tbh. We still watch a lot of live tv in this house and even though the BBC has multiple faults, I still think it represents good value for money. I enjoy many BBC programmes (particularly history and arts programmes) that I wouldn't find on other plaforms. Aged 58.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/08/2026 09:04

Im 64. I got done once for it. I opened the door it was tv licence person and the tv was blaring in the background in plain site.
I got dragged to court, fined very heavily and told Im lucky not to go to prison.
I was a dirt poor single working mum at the time. This was over 30 years ago.
I slung the tv into the refuse tip and havent had one since. Its improved my life no end.

Raptors · 26/08/2026 09:07

No I don't because I genuinely don't watch live TV. In no other circumstances would people think they are under some moral obligation to pay for a service they don't use so I never understand why people feel that way about the licence fee.

Sweetbeansandmochi · 26/08/2026 09:09

I do and my direct debit comes out in a few days so I am aware my £170 is coming out.

I listen to radio 4 a lot, I like the podcasts, I watch a couple of programmes a year on I-player like Traitors. I don’t really like their style of drama like Death in Paradise or The Night Watchman. I find them a bit dumbed down and hammy.

This stuff isn’t free to make and so I don’t mind paying for it.

Abouteffingtime · 26/08/2026 09:10

I was exoecting most people to not have one tbh.

It seems a lot to pay just to watch Traitors 😂 and the very occasional short series on iplayer.

Yes
We don’t watch a lot of live tv (sport mainly)
but use iplayer, love bbc radio (most of it across the family), their website

plus would hate for the bbc to be broken up or disappear, the UK punches above its weight across international culture we would be utter fools to let it go (like Brexit) and even though it isn’t perfect it does get held up to a higher standard than other media outlets

Abouteffingtime · 26/08/2026 09:11

@Sweetbeansandmochi posted at the same time, I wasn'treferring to you watching traitors, but me.

We do. We watch some live TV, but I’m happy paying it for the radio which we listen to a lot (BBC6).

Sweetbeansandmochi · 26/08/2026 09:11

I have never linked it just with the ‘live tv’ element - just the overall service that includes podcasts, news, radio etc - but from reading through this thread that some other do.

Danikm151 · 26/08/2026 09:11

Yes but it’s a bill that- if i’m a bit short I don’t feel bad paying late.

I try to use iplayer as much as possible to get my money’s worth. I don’t watch live tv and think the tv licence is stupid so think of it as a subscription like netflix and Disney- albeit a much more expensive one.

It’s their most popular show I think 😊

belleoubete · 26/08/2026 09:13

Yes but DH is not happy that we do 😂 I think we get our money's worth just by the amount of radio we listen to, let alone the endless Hey Duggee on iplayer!

Abouteffingtime · 26/08/2026 09:13

Do you need a TV license to listen to the radio??

No you don't.

Sweetbeansandmochi · 26/08/2026 09:15

You don’t need a tv license to listen to the radio - I just lump it altogether as part of the content they make and it’s either someone pays or you have to have adverts like commercial radio.

And we hate adverts in our house! The new changes to prime and Now TV that includes paying less but having more ads has not gone down well in my house.

Raptors · 26/08/2026 09:14

No you don't.

Thanks, 😂 feel stupid now. I didnt imagine you did, but people referring to radio and podcasts.

daisyydaisyy · 26/08/2026 09:16

No, I only watch YouTube. I also don’t want to give money to the BBC.

placemats · 26/08/2026 09:16

Have always had one and I'm 65. Used to have a subscription to Netflix but stopped over a year ago as there was nothing on it that interested me.

ilbehonest · 26/08/2026 09:17

nope I don't watch live TV I read books and my kids still have a dvd player 😂😂 I'm very old school.
