Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

That's awful abuse. She might have been a bit of a jobs worth but there was no need to speak to her like that. I am glad her employer is standing up for her.

PS. I also had a rough upbringing. I saw and heard terrible things when growing up. But I have enough self control as an adult not to repeat that behaviour. Very few people would find what you said acceptable, certainly in those circumstances. Stop looking for excuses for being abusive.

I hear you however in all of my life I’ve never had an argument with a member of staff in a shop. I’ve literally shopped in that supermarket hundreds of times

disgusting i hope no children heard you. i see you are upset but there was no need for that

Floppyearedlab · 24/08/2026 13:59

Oh OP….
you were in the right right up until you launched that tirade of bad language.

I know it’s bad, It was just her nastiness and rudeness over nothing, I am going to try and email an apology

woah! thats 0-100 in a nano second

Is there something else going on in your life thats stressing you out?

ATailWithAnIdiotAttached · 24/08/2026 14:00

You really said that??
Thats one hell of an escalation!!
I bet you’re not proud of yourself!! Why did you fly off the handle like that - that’s quite scary for a minor incident. I would have called the manager myself ( and have done before) if the staff are disproportionally rude but in this case … wow!

sittingonabeach · 24/08/2026 14:01

How often do you turn on people like that?

Are you for real? She was rude?

strugglinguphill · 24/08/2026 14:01

Your response was totally unnecessary, however as a shop worker she did make a big deal about it and shouldn’t have made that comment. I certainly wouldn’t have done.

That’s the bizarrest insult I’ve ever heard 😁.
I’d email an apology and find a new supermarket. Our nearest supermarket has a horrible woman working there, so I don’t use it any more.

Someone is doing their job. You were beyond rude and I’m not surprised you’ve been banned.

I know and I agree it looks disproportionate. I think it was just her nasty, spiky unpleasantness and the fact that she thought she could tell which pot to buy, it was the “acting like I own the place” comment that tipped me. I was just trying to find some melon that would last a few days!!

Yeah your insult was extreme but she did also sound like a knob.

Next time go straight to the manager and report the staff member instead of swearing at them.

Seriously never! Well, maybe once a decade. I cannot remember the last time I had a disagreement like that

Jellybunny98 · 24/08/2026 14:04

I can only see one “horrible twat” in this encounter and it’s not the woman who works at the shop OP.

MellowSubmarine · 24/08/2026 14:04

Jeez that’s quite a temper you’ve got!

And you were in the right up until then as well. I’ve worked on supermarket shop floors and she was being weird to comment on you taking something from the back.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 24/08/2026 14:04

She didn’t need to comment. But wow you took that to a very low level.

I certainly got the impression the staff member was rude.
