Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

Interesting that 2 of the top 3 trending threads are confessions of being very rude to another woman. What is going on here?

I think the great unwashed have discovered mumsnet

You clearly have an explosive temper for you to go from zero to full on personal abuse.

It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges.

Fucking hell what would you do if someone parked on your drive OP?! Would we see you on the news?

It’s gated 😀

She started it
You finished it
I can't have jobsworths tbf

Nofeckingway · 24/08/2026 14:38

What she said was a bit uncalled for . I thought Waitrose staff had better training than that. But what you said and did so overshadows everything that there was no way in hell that you can justify it . If I was the manager ( especially of naice Waitrose ) I would ban you too . Your the kind of customer no retail shop wants on its premises .

Go tell your family why you you are banned and see what way they react . I would be ashamed of you .

BeMellowAquaSquid · 24/08/2026 14:38

And you came on here to do what exactly? Brag?

Mum2Fergus · 24/08/2026 14:38

I’d have banned you too.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/08/2026 14:39

So, I don't think ywbu to be annoyed by her comment. She wnbu to be annoyed by you taking from the back. Your reaction was 0-100 in 3 seconds and OTT but you know that, so what happened in your head?! Has it happened before? Will it happen again?

MyThreeWords · 24/08/2026 14:39

Started off by having a certain amount of sympathy for you, @Alderedge1 , but your stupidly extreme swearing sucked all that away immediately.

It would have been way over the top even if it had sounded spontaneous, but there was so much artifice in it that you clearly gave it some conscious thought, during which you should have been telling yourself not to be vile. (Did you think that MN users would find it funny?)

The swearing was so gleefully unpleasant that I began to doubt you were as blameless in the melon rummaging as your account suggests. Anyone who can be as nasty as that to retail staff is well capable of other kinds of selfish behaviour.

Dweetfidilove · 24/08/2026 14:39

Eugh 😳🫢.
You should come with a warning ⚠️.
Of course they banned you, and surely you're too embarrassed to go back🤦🏾‍♀️.

Accidents do happen but to me it sounds like OP was being careless, although obviously I wasn’t there and accept I may be wrong. That said, the sales assistant was there and it seems likely she saw OP and also thought that she was being unnecessarily careless to respond in that way. If the sales assistant had seen it was a genuine mistake I think it’s less likely she would have responded like that, although again I obviously can’t say for sure. I do agree that the sales assistant was rude, and said as much. That still doesn’t justify OP shouting abuse at her though. If you think that somebody is behaving unprofessionally whilst working the correct step would be to speak to a manager, not to shout abuse.

Edited

I moved a few packets of melon, a few packs fell off the shelf. I immediately put them back?

Did it not occur to you just to walk away and get your stuff elsewhere? Genuine question, life is hard enough without conflict with a stranger over some knocked over melons ffs.

GameOfJones · 24/08/2026 14:40

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 14:22

Irritating to who?

I’ve never hit or punched anyone in my life

Yes but if you can be that unhinged and verbally abusive over a pot of melon then I'd also assume you're the sort of person that could hit someone. Seriously, you need to get some help.

I was in the supermarket earlier doing the weekly shop with my two young kids and if I'd heard you I would have been absolutely disgusted so well done Waitrose!

MrsVBS · 24/08/2026 14:40

The minute you resort to swearing and personal insults you have lost the argument.

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 14:29

That’s ok, I’m a big girl

A big girl wouldn't be on here whining about pots of melon and being banned for abusing staff members.

Wow. Have you has help does your anger issues. That's one hell of an escalation.

You have every right to choose. Date you prefer, that lady has a right to go to work and not be abused by customers.

I'm very pleased her management supported her well

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 24/08/2026 14:41

I’m clearly going to hell, because that made me laugh! 😆

Quite the escalation, OP!

sweetpickle2 · 24/08/2026 14:41

Of course you did.

Pipsquiggle · 24/08/2026 14:41

@Alderedge1
The problem with how you handled this scenario is that because what you said was so deeply offensive there will be no sanctions made on the sales assistant who was absolutely wrong in what she said to you.

I guarantee you that this lady will have been pulled up for poor customer service before & if you had just let things lie and asked to speak to the branch manager, she would have been told not to speak to customers like that.

Honestly OP, from what you said you deserve to be banned. It was appalling and you should be ashamed of yourself.

It's totally cringeworthy. OP will just have to find a replacement for her Duchy Organic products!

Asmileisworthathousandwords · 24/08/2026 14:05

If I was shopping near you I would have been upset just hearing that.
Then again I am hyper sensitive to people using vile language and unpleasant words as my adult son is unable to speak at all.
I have a view that if we have been blessed with the ability to speak (not all of us have sadly) then we should think carefully about how we use and choose our words.
Maybe I am being over dramatic but I'm having a down day and your post triggered something in me.

Meh. We don't need to speak in a certain way just because others can't speak. Just like we don't need to do leg exercises just because others can't walk.

CalmFairy · 24/08/2026 14:43

HollyhocksandPeons · 24/08/2026 14:37

You don't know that. I was once rude to a 'little person', you have no idea how I was punished! But everybody thought I was not punished at all. You never know. Honestly.

🙄you really dont get it.
