Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

Well, I’d take the ban on the chin. I don’t see how the outcome could have been any different. The woman needs to be able to work in her place of business without being yelled at. She shouldn’t have meddled in your melon selection but your response was ridiculous.

You should be ashamed of yourself. Regardless of what was said to you, your language was terrible. Utterly terrible.

Those pots with their thin plastic lid can be very fragile. You've probably damaged a few of the pots by dropping so many.

It's careless disregard for other people's property.

Do you also leave refrigerated food in random non-refrigerated aisles because you've changed your mind?

Honestly I am horrified that you would say that to someone. You should be totally and utterly ashamed of yourself. You should consider some sort of anger management therapy.

Ugh, pre-cut melon. All that totally unnecessary plastic. You can buy a whole melon for less, and get 3/4/5 times as much fruit out of it.

Well, after that treatment I wouldn't want to spend my money there anymore anyway. They've just helped your enforce spending your money elsewhere, where you're treated normally.

I did gigle at your comment, but you're right, it's not something that should have been said out loud. When we encounter annoying people like that, it's always best to just roll your eyes and walk away. That's a message, too. It's been my go-to reaction for years, and it really helps in 1) not stooping down to idiots' level, 2) keeping one's dignity, 3) showing the other person that you don't give a shit about them. They're not impirtant enough to speak a word to let alone argue with.

Sadly, I see entitled people like this in the supermarket quite often.

Using the C word or swearing AT someone isn't OK. I'd hate that at work and tbh if you was a colleague I'd get you sacked ( but I'm corporate. We swear, we just don't call people swear words).

She should have muttered under breath out of earshot too. So you both came off badly. I was in hospital during covid as a emergency admission with lots of dementia fall patients. The nurses had mastered the art of being lovely then muttering their inner thoughts back at their desk. I only heard as I was in a side room. Even a saint couldn't match their restraint.

Many of manage to look for longer dates at the back without knocking things over. But sometimes accidents happen. There was no need for the staff member to act how she did. If she really felt the need to make a point, she should have been more professional about it.

She was rude and abrasive. You were abusive, you got personal and took it to a whole other level. You deserve to be banned.

Honestly that's a ridiculous overreaction. I had someone tell me they were glad my mother was dead and I was able to show more restraint!

It doesn't look disproportionate. It was disproportionate. There's never an excuse to drag someone's appearance into an argument - it's uncouth and classless. But judging by your replies on this thread, seems like another Monday in your life.
