Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

God will punish those who humiliate and deride small people. Said not by me, but by Dostoevsky. I agree with him.

Schoolchanging · 24/08/2026 14:31

Yes you were very rude but she sounds like she needed the reality check

CalmFairy · 24/08/2026 14:31

Yes, I think you know you overreacted.

Are there other supermarkets close enough for you?

eatreadsleeprepeat · 24/08/2026 14:33

What please is the relevance of her age, her appearance or the fact she had dyed hair?
Does that mean that as a mid 60s with a pointed face I am not worthy of politeness?

Sporadica · 24/08/2026 14:33

You crossed the line into insufferable even before you launched into the full-on tantrum: She carried on chuntering so I said something like “it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. Of course she 'carried on'; you were being odd just assuming that she wanted to "chunter" at you rather than that her job required her to find out what happened and potentially recoup costs for any damage you'd done and to make sure you understood not to do it again. Condescending and dismissive may be your normal attitude, but as you found out the shop was not willing to stand by and see its employees impeded in doing their jobs, let alone abused. Good for them. It also turned out that it wasn't an option for you to blow off the manager who simply politely said she wanted a word with you and also keep shopping there - who could have guessed? 😆Neither employees nor other shoppers want or need to deal with toxic me-ism (not to mention the misogyny) just to buy some melon.

You clearly have an explosive temper for you to go from zero to full on personal abuse.

It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges.

Fucking hell what would you do if someone parked on your drive OP?! Would we see you on the news?

NSEW · 24/08/2026 14:14

Well I wasn’t expecting that! Your insult actually made me chuckle 🤭. She obviously didn’t deserve that level of escalation but she did deserve to be told to leave you alone to shop in peace.

I always choose the food from the back.

You think it was funny? 😦

Many of manage to look for longer dates at the back without knocking things over. But sometimes accidents happen. There was no need for the staff member to act how she did. If she really felt the need to make a point, she should have been more professional about it.

Accidents do happen but to me it sounds like OP was being careless, although obviously I wasn’t there and accept I may be wrong. That said, the sales assistant was there and it seems likely she saw OP and also thought that she was being unnecessarily careless to respond in that way. If the sales assistant had seen it was a genuine mistake I think it’s less likely she would have responded like that, although again I obviously can’t say for sure. I do agree that the sales assistant was rude, and said as much. That still doesn’t justify OP shouting abuse at her though. If you think that somebody is behaving unprofessionally whilst working the correct step would be to speak to a manager, not to shout abuse.

She was rude and was muttering about me making a genuine mistake. Get a grip

Interesting that 2 of the top 3 trending threads are confessions of being very rude to another woman. What is going on here?

You don't know that. I was once rude to a 'little person', you have no idea how I was punished! But everybody thought I was not punished at all. You never know. Honestly.

Oops, as soon as I typed this, one of them dropped a position to no 4 . . .

SleeplessRoads · 24/08/2026 14:37

She was rude, you were abusive. They shouldn’t let you back in, their likely low paid staff deserve more respect at work than you are able to give.

Also it is literally her job to determine which products you can and cannot buy. You don’t have a god given right to the best date. The shelves were probably stacked like that to stop customers buying the longer dated stuff and leaving the shorted dated stuff.

simpsonthecat · 24/08/2026 14:38

I try and get stuff with a longer sell by date because we live 20 miles round trip from a decent sized supermarket and I can't keep going. So I feel a bit warranted doing this.

BUT
Your language was appalling. Seriously. How horrible to call someone those words, unbelievable. Do you swear as a matter of course, and do your children?
