Singapore famously has a circular water system essentially toilet to water treatment plant to tap again. Ironically this makes their water almost too pure (because sewage water needs such a high level of treatment). The UAE also recycled toilet water for watering it's green areas etc but I think less effectively.
We could do that in the UK, but it would cost a lot and I can't see the good people of Britain wanting to drink Zia Yusuf's piss. Unless that's what they meant by trickle down economics.

Brilliant.

Instead of pissing around with HS2 and solar panels, the UK would have benefited much more from a North->South water pipeline, and everyone who can fitting water butts for rainwater.

(File under "if it really mattered").

Happy birthday @itsgettingweird 🎉🥳

Why can't we have trains and electricity and water though? Don't get me started on how the Netherlands has the Randstadt but the Northern cities of Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield etc pay the productivity cost of a repeat d governments that don't give a shit.

Besides, water has been privatised so the water companies themselves should have paid/been made to pay for that sort of infrastructure. Instead of awarding themselves huge dividends and bonuses.

Because that cow Thatcher and the moronic twat Blair thought selling the countries assets to a bunch of capitalist asset strippers was a better idea than actually running the infrastructure themselves.
I will never forgive either of them for the long term damage they did.

Trains AND electricity AND water? Flipping heck, go mad why don’t you.
Train networks all funnelling into London is a bugbear of mine. Want to travel east-west and you are buggered.

Happy birthday it’sgettingweird - hope you have something nice planned for yourself.

Happy birthday @itsgettingweird hope you’ve had a lovely day.
could not agree more Grumpy we sealed our future when we became the spivs of Europe selling the family silver just thinking about the damage makes me so bloody cross.

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2026 19:55

Thanks all.

Had an early start as ds swim training.

Then we went and sat on the beach watching the waves for a bit this afternoon before eating pizza and garlic bread and watching a film!

One of my closest friend died of cancer last week so I haven’t done much so it was nice to sit on the beach (and enjoy the fact it was cloudy and windy!).

Absolutely agree about the privatisation of water. Being a customer southern water I’ve seen first hand how corrupt these companies are. Their head for a £1m bonus the other week. For what? They have a hosepipe ban because they cannot conserve water, they leak more than they save through the ban and when they are called or investigate sewage they turn up and without even testing call a giant photographed turd - algae.

This country is corrupt and we have a party using all those disenfranchised through the corruption to create further divide and so their dirty work.

lord - I’m ranty atm 🫣

dontcallmelen · 17/08/2026 20:03

Sincere condolences @itsgettingweird 💐
I feel the same I’m so tired of the fucking spiteful bile that’s comes out of Farage mouth & his associated low life’s & what appears to be the complete inability of the media & other political parties to fucking call it out for what it is.

Llttledrummergirl · 17/08/2026 20:28

Happy birthday @itsgettingweird and condolences on the loss of your friend. FlowersGin

LizzieW1969 · 17/08/2026 22:35

I’m really sorry to hear about the loss of your close friend, @itsgettingweird.

And I agree with you and other posters about the privatisation of water and other utilities, it’s been a disaster.

Evenstar · Yesterday 00:01

This will trigger a few

Disabled people in England will be able to travel by bus for free at any time of day from April 2027.

Work and Pensions minister Lillian Greenwood tells #BBCBreakfast it's believed about one million people could benefit from the change

The key part of that article:

Currently, disabled bus passes are only eligible for use between the hours of 09:30 and 23:00 on weekdays, making it difficult for people to get to work or attend later evening events. They can be used at any time of day at the weekend and on bank holidays.

... posted because the headline makes it sound like disabled bus passes haven't been issued for free before! Instead, this is just an extension of the hours available to travel for free.

DuncinToffee · Yesterday 09:18

BBC headlines do that a lot these days

This is so wrong on so many levels. What an incredible waste. If ever there was a case for allowing asylum seekers to work this is it.
