Actually, I think this thread has been mostly (with a few exceptions) intelligent, interesting and reasonable discussion, as is much of the commentary I’ve read on X from the criticising JA and CU side (less so the other side in all honesty). So I don’t know why you are characterising the situation as two sides shouting at each other.

It’s clear that when the narrative of JA being a racist witch hunt is being pushed back, rationally and from black and minorities, they start with the semantics, dismissing the discussion as nothing more than shouting because it’s not going the way they had hoped.

CloverAndGrass · 18/08/2026 10:59

I’m actually really sickened by the people like Polanski, Abbott et al who are making a martyr out of a man who took his own life after being exposed as a fraud. What the fuck sort of message is this to send out? “Kill yourself and you will be vindicated and celebrated by thousands”. It’s almost like they don’t really care about vulnerable people at all.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/08/2026 11:00

Anything that Polanski advocates is a huge red flag. There's always an agenda with everything he attaches himself to - starting with his accession into the Green party. He's leader in name only.

Oh I wasn't talking about this thread, I've just come from twitter where an awful lot of people have definitely been shouting at each other.

The reaction to the vigil, in particular - at the vigil there seem to have been several speeches about Cofnas's racist campaign, accompanied by booing from the crowd. The replies about that would definitely count as two sides shouting at each other.

Will Self has just written an excruciating article where he literally names a list of people who he publicly blames for Arday's death and encourages more of this.

I guess because they think it helps detract from the underlying reality.

They also need a fictitious enemy/antagonist to help perpetuate the false narrative….

Is Polanski still a thing?

I thought his ‘star’ had wained immediately after the G&D by election….

I mean, Cofnas isn't fictitious and that part of the narrative isn't false.

Yes he's still a useful idiot, not doing a smart job of masking his true identity. Fortunately, you're right though. He hasn't got the impetus to take the party out of peripheral gear.

Thankfully a bit but then you think about left coalitions after a GE and he’s still an unwelcome thought.

Sadly not. Where there's a BAME voting base to exploit for ones own nefarious gains, there's a Polanski (and a Labour)

It is called freedom of speech, however unpalatable his views are to some of us.

As the saying goes, I may not agree with your views, but I shall defend your right to express them.

Anyway, we’ve been over this….

Ah yes, well Dave does possess a fairly unique habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, before a hurried retraction, or a gas-lit ‘you misunderstood me, its your fault’ etc.

Hopefully not long before he becomes a smudged footnote.

Yes, we have, so it is confusing as to why you are claiming that any suggestion of racism is a 'false narrative' when it clearly isn't.

You think one man criticising Arday is racist? One?

noblegiraffe · 18/08/2026 11:32

I mean, it's one thing to believe Arday's claims, it's another thing entirely to think that all the racists in the world just sat this one out.

The vast majority are not racist - just look at this thread ffs. So, stop trying to institutionalise it - it doesn’t wash anymore.

Your man was found out, and, for reasons known to him, decided to call it a day. Tragic as that is. That’s it.

If you and others want to continue to make this a debate on race, knock yourselves out. My interest in race extends only to Cambridge’s nonsense, not to JA’s skin pigmentation.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/08/2026 11:36

Cofnas is secondary to this situation. Whether he's racist or not, it doesn't alter anything from start to finish. He didn't have control over Arday's deception or his ex employer's shambolic DEI hiring process. He's getting flack because his work countered what Cambridge was trying to force. They picked the wrong horse to back in that race between Arday and other black scholars.

Trying to pigeonhole me as an Arday supporter merely because I acknowledge some racism in the narrative....

Cofnas was the start. That's where the waters get muddied. We know that others wanted to highlight Arday's plagiarism but were shut down by police and lawyers, so the first the public knew of any of this was via Cofnas.

Which is unfortunate. Perhaps things wouldn't have played out the way they did if it was a piece in the THE instead, because the wagons wouldn't have circled to protect Arday 'from racism' in the way that they did.

I must be following another thread then, because I don’t see ‘tribalism’ here either - just a cold, honest appraisal of what has happened/is happening.

No deflection, no gas-lighting, no obfuscation.

Many of us know where the blame squarely lies - we have articulated it to the nth degree.
