Sure, but I have no truck with people who claim that the press are completely blameless. The whole “JA chose to commit suicide and it was nothing to do with the press” brigade.

Do you understand the concept of root cause?

BermudaRhombus · 17/08/2026 19:46

Queenncat · 17/08/2026 19:41

Well quite. And yes she has, I can see why.

There are few sectors with as much simmering envy and resentment as academia.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2026 19:47

Jane379 · 17/08/2026 19:37

Thanks. I knew that was his argument., just wondered about what evidence he tried to use

It should be noted Cofnas has no scientific training. He is a philosopher, including of science, but he is not a scientist.

It's in the link in the quote.

"If Harvard admitted students based on their academic qualifications alone, Harvard would be 43 percent Asian, 38.4 percent white, 0.7 percent black, and 2.4 percent Hispanic, according to a 2013 study by Harvard’s Office of Institutional Research. Instead, Harvard’s undergraduates in 2013 were 43.2 percent white, 18.7 percent Asian, 10.5 percent black, and 9.5 percent Hispanic."

However, that doesn't mean that the other criteria used to score applicants other than academic success are irrelevant in whether someone would make a good Harvard student, yet his insinuation is that it does. The other criteria are character, athletics and extra-curricular activities. He then defines a 'meritocracy' as based purely on academic qualifications and extrapolates from some extremely niche (and old) data from people who applied to Harvard to the whole of society.

His conclusion also rests on the assumption that high profile positions outside of sports and entertainment would be best occupied purely by those with the highest academic qualifications. No people skills or anything else required.

Thanks.

What I find interesting about Cofnas is that he does not support colour-blind meritocracy, at least in the short run. As he thinks that will leave some groups under-represented in politically untenable ways.

That’s a much more interesting position than most of his critics credit him for.

His bit about black people disappearing from prominent positions under a colour-blind meritocracy is his argument contra Hanania, against such a system.

Anyway, I’m not a deep scholar of Cofnas but do think that bit is interesting.

'he does not support colour-blind meritocracy, at least in the short run. As he thinks that will leave some groups under-represented in politically untenable ways.

That’s a much more interesting position than most of his critics credit him for.'

Interesting is..one way to describe it.

So he essentially thinks most black people are too low IQ for anything except sport and entertainment, so quotas have to be done or they will be completely underrepresented?

What is his explanation for competent black professionals in places like Nigeria or Rwanda Botswana? By his logic, no majority black country would be able to function very much.

Bloody hell I tell you Nigeria and Botswana need to be more diverse. Where are the white people?

The fixation of whether C is racist again, deflects from the issue at hand but does reinforce the way they’re weaponising racism to make victims out of people engaging in dishonesty.

DestituteDesperate · 17/08/2026 19:38

Also, why would anyone in the press not have a field day when presented with such outlandish and inaccurate statements by JA.

The 7up, marathons, being mute - even old classmates and Sunday school students were clowning JA from the same racial and socio-economic background. They spoke up because it was calling ‘cap’. He was a ‘chatty patty’ in fact, the shade borough were mocking him on every post and they are Black owned.

The only people that are getting flak for exposing JA are people that some believe are racist.

And yet there are people on record who went to school with him who describe him as not talking, being taken out of class for speech therapy etc. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/aug/12/jason-arday-cambridge-claim-non-verbal-child

I’m afraid we’ll not agree on this. The level of press attention on JA was out of all proportion to the underlying “offences” he was accused of. It would have amounted to a form of psychological torture. I’d encourage you to read some of the accounts of people who have been put in similar situation - there are plenty in the public domain and the Levison evidence is a starting point. You don’t get to publish endless column inches to a worldwide audience that dissects and criticises every act of a person and then stand back and deny all involvement when that person breaks. Fortunately, some people survive this kind of experience, but many attest to the fact that they either attempted or were on the brink of doing what JA did.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2026 19:28

I've been thinking about this, and what lessons need to be learned? That you can't publish articles about people in case they commit suicide?

I mean, do we really want to be in a situation where Nigel Farage can say 'don't publish any articles about me and my £5 million bribe because it's badly affecting my mental health'? It would definitely be used for censorship.

And that is the danger here

There does seem to be a feeling that this will be used to make new regulations or laws to free speech about other stuff. Also it is being used by way of social pressure to try and silence people already.

What a strange interpretation.

Do you believe there are no competent doctors, scientists, engineers in majority black countries? They’re all just half arsing it because there’s not enough white/East Asian people to do the jobs?

Guessing not. Well, that’s what Cofnas believes.

D Noticed on Dunblane

Press unable to report on rapes in Rochdale due to multiculturalism or report the truth about the school boy - even suppressing two Asian teachers stating the British boy who was painted as the villain, clearly wasn’t the aggressor and victim was constantly making sexually inappropriate remarks and advances to girls and extremely disrespectful to all authority.

We already have a severely compromised press in certain aspects and they’ll use this to completely obliterate it.

I wonder. If Kathleen Stock had topped herself when all around her were losing their penis shaped rags with her (for stating biological sex is real - Yes! She highlighted the truth/ facts), would she be a heroine now? A crowd funder from politicians and celebs for her family? Somehow..

There would have been vile social media and celebrity comments from some and then half arsed mumbles from others followed by quickly changing the subject to something else. That is what has just happened with Ann Witcombe murder so I expect nothing less than the same reckon in your scenario

You know, I just found this out but the white population of Botswana is 3%, that's only 1% less than the black population of England. It's higher than many African countries- Nigeria is much lower.

What’s the real reason for Sir David’s death.

Why is it, his daughter keeps alluding to ‘what are they hiding’. Let’s be clear, it’s beyond obvious why they’ll not be calling for a public enquiry.

The left are silent on this though.

BermudaRhombus · 17/08/2026 20:20

Queenncat · 17/08/2026 20:12

So you do! That's great. What is the root cause of the JA situation?

I’ve not said that press coverage is the root cause of the JA ‘situation’ (by which I mean his decision to end his life), but I consider it to be an important contributory factor. This conclusion is supported by the relevant evidence to which I have already referred. If you feel that the root cause is the sole and only relevant factor then that’s ok. There’s nothing to be gained from arguing about it, because I don’t think either of us will change our views!
