There would have been vile social media and celebrity comments from some and then half arsed mumbles from others followed by quickly changing the subject to something else. That is what has just happened with Ann Witcombe murder so I expect nothing less than the same reckon in your scenario

Ann Widdecombe’s death is now a murder investigation, so coverage will go quiet. There were masses of tributes to her in the immediate days following her death, from across the political spectrum.

Nope. You?

Not at all. Glad to hear it 👍

I’ve not said that press coverage is the root cause of the JA ‘situation’ (by which I mean his decision to end his life), but I consider it to be an important contributory factor. This conclusion is supported by the relevant evidence to which I have already referred. If you feel that the root cause is the sole and only relevant factor then that’s ok. There’s nothing to be gained from arguing about it, because I don’t think either of us will change our views!

Bloody hell - you just can't answer it. Extraordinary. Btw the JA situation to which I am referring isn't his decision to end his life. But you know that. Anyway, agreed no need to discuss further.

I posted specifically about the role of the press in JA’s decision to end his life. Don’t be disingenuous.

Thinking about Jason's family- how do you get through your loved one ending their own life? I've know two people who suffered this trauma. One was an academic friend, whose son ended things. I won't say the method but I just can't comprehend.

True. Probably not the best example I could have given but what would likely happen in the scenario given I stick by.

I don’t know, but I hope Jason’s family aren’t reading this thread.

Ok I’ll rephrase that. @KittyCorncrake are you ok?

Or possibly his family.

Or possibly his family.

I don't think they will have the energy or maybe it will give them inner strength.

BermudaRhombus · 17/08/2026 21:29

Interesting though - @KittyCorncrake seems to imply it’s unreasonable for people to hold a vigil for someone who has died and you leap straight to “white saviours”. You just can’t help yourselves.

I'm not going to walk on egg shells with everything I say the same way as Kitty doesn't need to. You're policing the thread - again.

BermudaRhombus · 17/08/2026 21:43

Seriously, give your head a wobble. You’re mocking people holding a vigil for someone who has died. It’s pretty low.

LuckyHazelFox · 17/08/2026 21:46

No, I'm questioning whether it was sanctimonious, condescending people making themselves feel morally superior. I might have empathy for what's happened but I haven't changed my position on what went on before. That is my opinion. It's not going to change because it doesn't suit you.

Whatever you need to tell yourself. As with Kitty, I genuinely hope everything is ok with you. Enjoy your evening.

I'm sure me and Kitty are fine. Our own minds seem to be in good working order.

You know, you need to tell the people who have been trying to come up with a way to measure intelligence for entry to grammar schools. They haven't managed to write one that selects for intelligence over parental wealth yet.

Could you share your data?

In the general case “it’s mainly parental wealth” is something that feels like it should be true but just isn’t when studied.

Maybe grammar school entry is an exception though (eg because of housing effects or the short-run tutoring window).

Here you go, there was an attempt to create a tutor-proof test of 'natural ability' that would end discrimination against disadvantaged pupils trying to get into grammar schools,

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/sep/12/tutor-11plus-test-grammar-schools-disadvantaged-pupils

They had to admit failure, the 'tutor proof test' of literacy, numeracy and non-verbal reasoning discriminated against kids from disadvantaged backgrounds and (pertinently here) against kids from certain ethnic minority backgrounds.

The argument 'perhaps they aren't as naturally clever as the white, non-disadvantaged kids' is then shown not to be true when they sit their SATs. Kids who get the same SATs scores are less likely to pass the grammar school test of intelligence if they are from ethnic minorities or disadvantaged backgrounds.

"Even with identical test results at the end of primary school, higher-attaining children from the poorer postcodes scored, on average, 20 marks less in the new Bucks test (the pass mark is 121 marks) than their better-off peers. The data suggests a similar bias against children from some BME groups, including Pakistani."

And remember this was a test specifically designed not to do that.

‘Tutor-proof’ 11-plus professor admits grammar school test doesn’t work

As Theresa May calls for more selection to help disadvantaged pupils, evidence emerges showing the entrance exam is intrinsically unfair on them

I wonder if they have 50% whites on tv adverts?

Are TV adverts here 50% black people? I tend to skip watching adverts when I do.

Thanks. I couldn’t get through to the underlying study. But from the write-up it doesn’t seem to look at tested IQ at all, so I don’t think it helps us answer that question much.

We could assume that SATs are a proxy but then we are assuming the thing you contest (ie that school achievement captures tested IQ more than other factors).
